i was checking out some themes, and i found this theme that had tron life discs at the bottom displaying speed, temp, and mem. i followed the links to get those discs on my desktop but i dont kno how to do it.

I have an ATI Radeon 9200 AGP card. I plan to upgrade it mainly because the 2D performance in KDE (3.x without Beryl or Compiz) is just bad. Since we are talking about a relatively old desktop, I do not want to completely upgrade it. So, I want to just upgrade the VGA card. I have found the following cards: Nvidia GeForce 6200
Radeon HD 2400 Pro
Radeon X1600 Pro Avivo Edition
Now, the simple question: Their prices are just OK (just a couple of � separate them). Which chip is better? And which chip is better supported from our beloved distro?
EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen in Chrome or Firefox periodically I want to place a shortcut to a web page on my desktop. To do this I click on the button just to the left of the address and drag it up to the desktop. Sometimes this works but more often this creates a copy of the HTML page. And if the web page is HTTPS I get an error. I can drag to the Bookmarks Bar and it copies the link fine. Then I can drag it from the Bookmarks Bar to the desktop. I know I can create a launcher for the web page on my desktop but that's a lot of trouble. Why would dragging to the desktop work sometimes and not others? Are there any work arounds or fixes? I am using Ubuntu 10.4, Chrome 6.0.472.53 and FF 3.6.10.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

View 9 Replies View RelatedAt my Uni, we use a web-based login for our internet connections. Its based off of Cisco, and every Wednesday night every computer on campus must re-enter their credentials to use the network.
Normally on my several computers I simply pull up the Terminal, point links to google.com using

And enter my credentials when Cisco redirects to the login page.
Literally, the process is

Then ENTER to accept the redirect, down arrow to skip over the logo image, USERNAME, ENTER, PASSWORD, ENTER, ENTER.
Naturally, this is EXTREMELY time consuming, as I have about 5 computers located around campus and must physically walk to the machines and login every single week.
My question is, How would I formulate a program that does the following;
1) checks for connectivity (i.e. is able to reach/resolve to the greater part of the internet) and
2) automatically fills in the credentials on the links login page?
Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable...
I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
I have a personal wiki of notes, with now thousands of links in markdown format:

but now that fckeditor is available for mediawiki (very beta), it has become much better to just stick with wikitext format. There are only a few conversions to do: tables, links, and bulleted lists. The lists are a fairly simple regex and fckeditor magically reformats the tables, so all I'm left with is the links. But I'm not a regex master. How do I reformat code...
i'm running 9.10, and just downloaded and installed HPLIP. the problem is that now there are a ton of icons on my desktop, is it safe to delete them? i have a feeling the program just unpacked them there and that they're safe to delete, but i want to make sure

Have had it on the laptop for a couple days and everything worked greatattempted to see what if Compiz would work and could not get it going. The computer froze upd to hard restart. When I did that and came back I found I have no desktop icons; if I log out and relog back in but switch to classic ubuntu the desktop is fine (of course not the Unity screen). I removed Compiz and attempted to remove and reinstall Unity based on a Google search but nothing changed.Two questions:1. what is the best next move to see if I can get the Unity icons and correct interface back on the desktop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been looking at Ubuntu for a couple years and finally decided to give it a try on an old Dell laptop 1150.Managed to get it loaded on and it all came up, did the updates.But the desktop will not respond. When the mouse arrow passes over on the left side icons it will sometimes change the color of them but still won't do anything.I did a quick search but did not see anything relatedam an absolute rookie with this Linux thing. Did I make the right choice with Ubuntu?

It is running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with Gnome and the default "Human" theme.As the machine was delivered, there was only one icon on the desktop. This afternoon I closed a window (after successfully installing Dropbox) to reveal the desktop, and discovered that this icon had increased in size enormously, taking up about half the height of the screen (which is 640x480). I have no idea why this has happened.I also find now that new icons I put on the desktop appear at this huge size. I can resize them individually, of course, but even at the smallest they will go to they are still too big, and in any case I want icons to default to the original, sensible (small!) size.

I installed some security updates on my computer yesterday , and when it said to restart now or later. I choose to do this later. I was watching a movie and then half way through the computer shut down and then when it restarted the desktop, toolbar at the bottom and icons where all huge, and when you open applications and internet screens etc they are all way to big to fit within the screen
