OpenSUSE Hardware :: Keeping Nvidia Settings - Can't Get My Wallpapers To Fill The Desktop

Mar 11, 2010

I have read and read and googled for my specific problem and nothing exactly matches. I have a Nvidia 8400GS, running SuSe 11.1, kernel 2.6.27.45-0.1.1,, Nvidia Drivers 193.5, KDE 3.??. It seems like about every third or fourth time I boot up I have to rebuild and install the Nvidia drivers (the hard way). When I get up and running again, use the Nvidia Control panel and save the settings to Nvidiaxxxxxxx.RC file. Why does this keep happening, any suggestions or threads that might answer this problem?? Also I can't get my wallpapers to fill the desktop, they are tiled sometimes and I can't change them. One other thing is I am having trouble with the screensavers, they won't start, and I like to delete some of them?

Ubuntu :: Keeping System Up To Date?

Apr 22, 2010

Was curious about keeping a running system up to date. Can any harm come from running the following:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get upgradeWhat I mean is, is it possible that doing the above could cause a perfectly healthy system to go foobar? If so, what's the best way to prepare a system for a recovery. The Server in question is a Hardy BIND server. In the past, I've seen some ugly things happen to Windows systems after running updates, so I'd like to err on the side of caution.

General :: Keeping Xandros 4.1 Up To Date.

Jan 11, 2010

Xandros isn't keeping its repostorie Apps. updated. I tried Ubuntu 9.04 and it was good with only a minor change, (wireless was slow). Got a workround from Ubuntu forum. Login as root I was able to fix it, I updated to Ubuntu 10. Wireless was slow again. I tried logging on as root. Ubuntu 10. has lockout root and sudo won't let me add (iwconfig wlan rate 54M) to a boot up program to fix it. I went back to 9.04 now it wouldn't let me sign in as root. I next tried Debian Lenny. The screen res. was 1600 x 900? And for Dabian Lenny the screen res. is set automatically and can't be set manually, so I could not finish the install. So I'm back to Xandros 4.1 needing help to keep it up to date.

Ubuntu Installation :: Keeping Software Packages Up To Date

Mar 31, 2010

I've had a search through the forums but can't find what I'm looking for, I'm sure it's there and apologies for asking something that has undoubtedly been answered before. I'm running numerous Ubuntu 8 LTS web servers, with mysql, rails, nginx, etc etc and I was after some advice about keeping these servers up to date with security updates. I'm on the ubuntu security announcements mailing list, but I was hoping to find a way to automate the installation of any security updates.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Move Indicator Session Applet To The Right Of The System Date/clock Applet

May 6, 2010

I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Natty Clock Settings In Unity Menu Bar?

Apr 27, 2011

I recently upgraded my clean install Ubuntu Studio 10.10 64bit to Natty 11.04 and whilst everything is working well (except for having no plymouth boot splash - but I'm looking into this) I have noticed that when I log in to the "Ubuntu" desktop (with the Unity launcher and Menu bar in the top panel) I can't seem to change how the time and date is displayed. It seems to be stuck showing 24 hour time only with no date no matter which setting I select in the 'Clock' tab of 'Time & Date Settings' menu.

The clock applet works perfectly when I log into the 'Ubuntu Classic' desktop and I am able to display the date and weather ok.

I have a laptop which I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to 11.04 as well and it doesn't have the same issue.

I thought it might have been a rouge Gconf setting so I dumped my entire gconf using

Code:
gconftool-2 --dump / > ~/Desktop/allgconf.entries

then restarted into recovery and removed my ~/.gconf folder entirely, rebooted again and logged back on. Apart from losing some settings like Evolution and Networking, which I reloaded, and my theme going back to the default theme, the problem still exists.

Software :: "Clock Skew Detected" And 127.127.1.0 In Ntp.conf / Error Message Invalid Date In Changelog?

Feb 28, 2011

I try to setup a HPC cluster with CentOS 5.5. But now there is no Internet connection available in the room where the hardware is located so I set up ntpd server using synchronization with local clock (maybe I do something wrong). Here is my ntp.conf file on a master node (the master node has IP 10.0.1.1, a file server has IP 10.0.1.2 and compute nodes are 10.0.1.3..10.0.1.11, comments are omitted):

Code:
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict -6 ::1
restrict 10.0.1.1 mask 255.255.255.255 notrust
restrict 10.0.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap
code....

Any time I try to install software building it from source when I run make I get a waring "Clock skew detected. Your build may be incomplete". Some software build successfully and run normally after install but some build tasks are failed for example when I try to build RPM's via 'make rpms' for BLCR I get an error message about invalid date in changelog. But the system date seems to be right. I suppose I have invalid settings of NTP.

Fedora :: Network Time Protocol Part Of Date / Time Settings

Oct 3, 2009

I've got fedora 11 set up to use network time protocol to sync my laptop's date & time when I'm on-line. The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.

Sep 8, 2010

I have been having problems keeping my hard drives alive with openSUSE 11.3, it is happening way to often and I'm starting to think its more than bad luck. The hard drives that I have been using are brand new 500 GB Western Digital hard drives. Once I get it I would do SMART test on it, which all turn out clean, then a couple of months later I go to boot my system and I am fronted with a { DRDY ERR } { UNC}. Checking the SMART selftest log from the repair mode on the DVD I get a read failure at about 10% of the drive, the LBA of first error is: 578307645. I can't keep replacing the HDD ever couple of months its just getting way to expensive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Keeping Familiar Hostname In SUZE 11.2?

Jan 6, 2010

I managed a first installation of SUZE 11.2 from a mag distro - downloaded the iso file - burned the dvd, installed again, looking to retain the host name for this computer. But for the second time I get a linuxXXXXX sort of host name! No chance to set my preferred one up. I like what I've seen of SUZE so far and am happy to move to it sort of permanently. This legacy hostname helps me keep sane in networking matters though and I have yet to configure a networked laserprinter and add another computer. Can I re-set the hostname to my selection without harming the whole set-up?

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading To 11.3 Keeping /home Partition?

Feb 23, 2011

I'm upgrading to 11.3 (from 11.2) and will be keeping my current home partition. Will this keep my browser favorites? Also, I read somewhere that in order for things to work properly after upgrading (without reformatting my /home partition) that I would have to keep the same username AND user UID...? Is that true? How do I make sure I have the same UID if so...?

I purposely set up a seperate home partition so that when I changed distro's or upgraded I would still have my files, and some settings intact. (I switched distros a lot when I first started using Linux.) I set up a "bin" folder (in home folder) that had a couple of programs I had downloaded to keep from having to set up and configure everything all over again every time I felt like changing distro's as well.

Ubuntu :: Conky Clock And Top Panel Clock Not In Sync

May 27, 2011

I'm using a very simple conky script to diplay the date and time on my desktop. I've noticed that he conky clock is a few seconds early compared to the time displayed in the right hand side of the top panel (Natty). I guess both displays are based on the same "internal" time, so I'm left wondering how this could happen, and how to sync back the clocks.

It seems that Conky is in sync with the system date, while the panel clock is 2 seconds late (on my system). Checked with while true; do date; sleep 0.1; done

OpenSUSE :: Keeping The Mangler (Native Ventrilo Client) Working?

Apr 13, 2011

I play MMOs and need to be able to communicate in ventrilo with the guild and groups that I am in. I have never had any problems making windows games work in WINE as long as the appDB says they are good to go, but I have had an ongoing problem with Mangler in a few distros.

I have had an on going problem with my system and Mangler. I use a creative usb fatality headset. When I am in Windows it works fine for ventrilo. If I boot into Linux and load up Mangler I can get it to work, but then after a while no one can hear me, but I can hear them and the Mangler icon in the system tray turns yellow instead of green.

I have the audio settings in Mangler set for my USB head set. My head set will consistintly work in Audacity. When I go into the pulse audio settings and set the drop box down to my head set it will show default audio every time I go back into the audio settings. If I reboot then plug in the headset and then reste the drop down to head set it will work. If I open a game or something it will close sometimes other times I think it just takes time. I have had the same propblem on Ubuntu 10.04, Kubuntu 10.10, and openSUSE 11.4.

OpenSUSE Install :: Using An SSD But Keeping Home Directory On Hard Drive?

Jun 14, 2011

I have a dual boot windows XP/OpenSuse 11.3 system running from a hard drive. They are both 32 bit in spite of the fact that the system can run 64 bit.

I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit (the wife insists, not yet a Linux possibility) and OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit, but having the programme files on an SSD for faster loading, with my data files on the existing hard drive.

I'm happy with the notion of getting the SSD going as a dual boot system. With Windows, as I understand it, it can tell it fairly easily where to look for the "my documents" folder on the hard drive.

However, the Home directory in Linux is not quite the same. How (if it's possible) could I run the SSD but use my existing Home directory on the hard drive?

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Booting 11.2 And W7 While Keeping W7's Boot Manager Intact

Jun 2, 2010

my Windows partition and the future Suse partition will be on different HDDs, so this should ease things a bit. Suse is on HDD 2 and Windows on HDD 1 HDD 2 will be the default Master drive, so I want GRUB to give me to option to boot either on Suse, either on Windows 7 I want to keep Windows 7 boot manager intact. I.E. If I switch HDD 1 to the Master drive, it will boot directly into Win 7.

What I wanted to do is:

Unplugg Windows drive
Install Suse
Replugg Windows drive and manually add the entry to GRUB

if I keep them both plugged, Linux will not touch HDD 1 MBR?
