OpenSUSE Install :: White Display After Login Screen
Dec 29, 2009This is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

Sep 5, 2011My GTK setup has started to behave strangely - I believe since upgrading to FF 6 . The FF search bar, the Gimp menu and other similar controls are now decorated with a transparent white outline. I do not have any customizations applied and I am unsure how to fix it. Running OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit, GTK 2.22.1, Gnome 2.32.1.

Jul 22, 2011Ok this is a problem that has dogged me for years but I was hoping it was fixed in 11.4. Using the acroreader plugin pdfs sometimes work but most often they result in a white or black blank screen and once one pdf has failed then they all fail until I restart firefox. It is a huge pain - under kubuntu I have used mozplugger to display pdfs with okular in the browser but this doesn't seem to be in the repos.
I don't think it is just me, all the people I know using suse seem to have this problem but it never gets fixed. how to get pdfs reliably displayed in firefox?

Feb 17, 2010I have tried, and I think succeeded installing this font. Geneva Font It seems to work and scale fine in AbiWord and and OOwriter, but it does not display in firefox, it is horrible. The above link shows a sample which is really very bad at all levels of zoom. This site (I think this is the same problem) is also terrible, until I zoom to a very large size, when it smooths out. GNF - Gambling Network Forums I have set the firefox smoothing to 0, so it is not that. (browser.display.auto_quality_min_font_size;0) Here are screenies, if your browser shows the pages OK: The last one is magnified in an image editor. Nov 20, 2010Hi, very new to opensuse. I have 64bit 11.3 and its been working very well. My problem is that in Firefox: I have Firefox 3.6.12 when i scroll down using the mouse scroll wheel (not up?) most of the time, but not all the time i get horizontal lines instead of the "real picture". This also happens when i use my keyboard's down arrow key.
When i go slower it seems to happen less often. Also if i click off the page and back on again the display is fine. Is this problem my graphics card? Firefox? or my mouse/keyboard?

Aug 16, 2010I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10. After the upgrade process, I restarted and chose "Ubuntu, with [the current kernel]" and now I am greeted with a white screen with no login or boot splash. My processor is pegged according to the processor case light. My computer's specs are as follows: AMD Athlon X2 5200+, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, 2GB DDR2 ram, Dell Socket AM2 Motherboard, and 250 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I really need to get this computer to work.

I like black themes, and right now everything but that bar is black.

Some one had told me that it would be there on the following directory.
/usr/share/icons/balanzan/scalable/apps and select firefox.png.
But I couldn't find it there.
There was no balanzan folder inside icons. I could find scalable folder inside default.kde4 folder.
/usr/share/icons/default.kde4/scalable/apps/
But there no firefox.png.

Oct 2, 2010As the title says I have a problem with Windows 7. After installing openSUSE 11.2 on my Dell v1320 laptop Windows cannot initialize the device driver for its display adapter ( Code 37 ). The Dell Touchpad also couldn't start (Code 10). I have reinstalled an older version of the Touchpad driver from Alps and it didn't work. I also tried system restore but that didn't work either.

Jan 11, 2011I'm testing HTML5 for the first time, using Firefox (beta) 4.0b8 and SeaMonkey (beta) 2.1b1, and its ignoring some CSS. Specifically, I have problems with the <details> tag. (It is nested in a paragraph...I am using it to provide an in-paragraph definition in hopes it can be toggled.)
Firefox only partly supports <details>. It's not supposed to show anything except the content of <summary>, unless you click on <summary>'s content. Instead, it puts a line break before the content of <details>, splitting the paragraph in two peices (which looks silly), without the "closed/open" functionality.
So I tried using "display:inline" in my CSS, but that gets ignored. Just for fun, I also tried "display:hidden" (also ignored) and "display:none" (obeyed).
SeaMonkey doesn't doesn't do anything special with the content of <display>...but it also ignores the same CSS as Firefox.
The only thing I can do to support semantic design is apply "font-style:italic" to all <details> elements.
Granted, you might ask, "why bother using <details> at all. then?" Well, I would like to have <details> for the browsers that support it, with the "font-style:italic" to degrade the page nicely for those that don't (such as for SeaMonkey).
Does anyone know why "display:inline" and "display:hidden" get ignored?

Jan 13, 2011I installed ubuntu 10.10 alongside Win7 recently, absolutely new to this OS.
Experiencing problems with firefox browser. A plain White blank screen appears only with the titile bar named Firefox. Actually when the web-browser icon is clicked, just a cursor BAR appears stuck inside the extreme left end of the screen (cursor bar something like the one we find in word processors or this blinking line while I type this). I manually have to expand the bar in order to get the firefox browser, which is the plain white screen.
Initially had problems with the missing wireless firmware, reading through this forum I activated the Broadcom driver. But before that, I wired in my laptop to the router and then FIREFOX worked fine, after an update which installed bout 214 updates the firefox got conked.

Jul 20, 2011Upgrade install to 11.04 using unity theme. I get random white screens/panels. first time was the whole login screen, second is the body of notepad but terminal works fine. I can enter content and it works, sometimes if I refresh it draws the body correctly, sometimes when I change focus it does not work. That happened with Firefox. I have everything updated and I have not changed anything. No private drivers to install. I'm guessing its just a setting somewhere.

Jul 25, 2011I just switched to OpenSUSE/KDE4 from Ubuntu/Gnome2. Overall, I am very pleased. However, I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve. That is, Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole Terminal do not have maximize buttons in their titlebars and there is not any other way to maximize these windows. Also, if I right click on the task manager tab for those applications then the "Maximize" menu item in the context menu is grayed out so it is inaccessible too. The bottom line is that there is no way to maximize these windows. All other applications, such as Dolphin, Chromium, Konqurer, LibreOffice, etc. have maximize buttons and a "maximize" menu item in their task manager context menus. Then, why don't Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole also have maximize buttons? I am using the Oxygen theme and have configured the buttons on the Oxygen theme to include the Maximize button.

Ubuntu :: Unusable White Windows After Upgrade To Natty
May 2, 2011I have never been more diappointed in the new user experience after an os upgrade. No, not even Vista was this diappointing. Unity just isn't for me. That's ok, I can just stick to Ubuntu Classic. As for the problem: I cannot use many of my applications. When I launch something, Firefox for example, all I see is a window filled with white. There is a title bar and nothing else. Sometimes, if I am really lucky, switching to something else then coming back fixes it. Usually it does not fix it, and can even cause other apps to go all white. This has happened in every app I have tried (I have tried a lot of them). It also happened under both Unity and Gnome.
My normal web browsers have not worked once since I upgraded. In general, the applications that seem to work most often are simpler ones. I am writing this post using w3m since it was the only way I could get this box online now... Does anyone have any advice for fixing this problem? This is not the first time I have been burned by a X.04 release. I might have to reinstall maverick...

Mar 31, 2009Most of the issues involve disconnect after a login and mouse settings. It does work fine for me, but after a few days of being up and using vnc on and off it will still connect, but show the black/white mesh screen with the big black X cursor, then if I wait 30 seconds it disconnects.

If I restart the computer it works again, however this message is still shown in the logs:
So I guess the above message is trivial to the problem? The thing is, I am not using KDE4, I installed 3.5, and in sysconfig my display manager is set to KDM not KDM4.
I'm using VNC through remote administration, multiple users will be accessing this from the network and need to get to the login screen.

Apr 16, 2011I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

May 6, 2010I'm running an Acer 1810Tz, dual boot with win7.Under 9.10 and Grub I had no boot issues, however I have just completed the upgrade to 10.04 and upgraded GRUB to GRUB2.Everything boots just fine into Ubuntu, and my GRUB menu looks right, but when I select the Windows 7 option, the machine just hangs with a black screen, white cursor top left. I'm sure this is a trivial problem, something overwritten that shouldn't have been perhaps, but I have no clue where to start.
