i have xterminus installed. i also have a white block over the first letter in my username and when i begin typing, the 'block-type cursor' just leaves full white spaces behind and i cannot read my text at all. even when i delete back over the white spaces, they stay whited out.
I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. I tried to install xterm, it can work, but it not easy to use for me, I still want to use gnome-terminal,

I am trying to read a file character wise and trying to write the same character to another file. In this process, I unable to read and write white spaces successfully to the new file. The script reads the white spaces but while writing the white space is lost. The section of the code, is given below. Please advice how can i read and retain the white space while writing to a new file.

Im using this unix command(in a php file) to remove a certain string and then remove the whitespace left by that string. Unofrtunately in many cases, the files get completely erased. Is there a workaround?

when booting up the system it promts for user and pass. After entering username and password followed by enter the system looks like its going to start. But no, it loads a white page for a couple of seconds and then go back to the section where you enter username & password. Why? the user and pass was correct. If i hit ctrl + alt +f1 and use the same username and password i can login with the CLI. But not in the graphical login prompt. How does such a problem gets fixed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio FW series. It has Nvidia graphics that I don't think the OS is taking advantage of, whatever. It also came with 64-bit Windows, it's a 32-bit OS, and again, as far as I have been concerned, whatever. It's been functioning fine for the half a year since I installed it.
Until recently. My computer has been freezing. What happened first is that the screen randomly whited out, fading in splotches to black and then back to white. This freaked me out, but restarting seemed to smooth things out. Then windows in the OS wouldn't resize, then Flash videos would freeze the OS up, repeating the 2 seconds of sound it last played. Over and over again. In a loop. On a white screen. Sometimes with vertical stripes.
This all happens inconsistently, and whenever I restart it's fine again. I just want to know if there's a deeper issue so that I can resolve it. Otherwise I have been completely satisfied, as a previous Windows and OSX user who is computer-competent within a GUI.

What do? ubuntu 8 worked fine, i ran an update to 10 and it did the same thing. i figured i would try debian since i have it on my other 2 computers. this is being installed on a desktop with a radeon 9800 graphics card. i know the card is the problem because of a driver issue (as i've read) but how do i get it.

Problem When installed debian on the virtual server it asked for a Network Connectivity Hardware and my network card was not found on the list and i have alredy my debian install img file selected sow how do select the supported exe file for my network card in hyper v if i have alredy mounted my iso file?

I got a used Gateway Solo 9550 from a friend. It was running windows when I got it. So I decided to try to test Debian on it. I am relatively new to the Linux scene so I have had a few issues with no idea how to fix them. The biggest one is video. I can get it the laptop to boot up in recovery mode and have nomodeset enabled. With nomodeset in gnome it will work for approx. 20-30 seconds, and then the screen will turn white then to black and then slowly turn rainbow. I know that its not a monitor problem because I ran DSL and DSLN on the same rig, but when I plugin an external monitor its fine on the external but not on the internal.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed compiz with nvidia trouble is when I run compiz white bars or lines (bars) appear in open windows (icewease, gedit, etc.). They disappear after a few moment and reappear when scrolling a page. BTW everything works fine with metacity running as window manager.

I have the nvidia driver 173.14.09 installed. Running Debian Lenny stable x64 and turion x2 with a geforce 8200M G graphics card with dual screens. I first installed the debian repos compiz, then upgraded to the tuxfamily repo version. I installed the nvidia driver 190 from nvidia's website and that fixed it!
I downloaded a debian whezzy media after installation when the system begins to boot the system appears a white screen, and not from any error.

I wanted to try F10 today so I downloaded the Fedora 10 64 Bit LiveCD but for some reason after it's done loading (the three colored loading bar), it hangs on a white screen with no sign of my computer thinking (no HDD LED activity and no CD ROM activity indicators flashing). Any clue how I could test the LiveCD without having to install Fedora (with text or otherwise..)? For the record, I have a 4870 1GB graphics card. I'm assuming that's fully supported, right?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm on a Dell notebook with Radeon Xpress 200M just upgraded from F11 to F12 and began to have white screen issues, immediately. At the beginning of boot screen went to white, hard drive activity but no control. Upon several retries and hooking up an external VGA, I managed to get display on both the external and LCD, i think in twin mode -- I then disconnected the VGA, and the LCD was OK ... until the next reboot: the LCD started going to white screen just before the GUI login, while the VGA remained viewable. Then, for no apparent reason, it would now and then go to white at the very beginning of the boot, then, again, just before the login. Also, looking at the external, it appeared that the system was thinking it had two displays working in extended desktop mode (cursor and windows would spill over to the left of the VGA screen)
"xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800" caused both displays to go black momentarily, then each would come back to the state it was in -- VGA to viewable display, and the LVDS to white screen. Subsequent xrandr didn't appear to trigger anything.
tried "system-config-display", to no avail. Removing the "xorg.conf" doesn't help. Tried several reboots, including into text mode, nothing worked (it's bewildering that it worked the first time an external was hooked up, but not many subsequent times)Hooked up a different external, played around with settings, then another xrandr command did finally bring back the LVDS ! (whether the LVDS is a white screen or is working, xrandr reports it is connected.) I apologize for posting this question without exhausting all possible combinations and scenarios -- i've already lost three hours this morning (and troubleshooting with rebooting ultimately leads to forced file-system checks (long waits) for those of us with ext3 still). It is reasonable to predict that although the LVDS is working at the moment, the problem is not fixed, since it worked and then stopped working before.
Also, nothing like this ever happened with this machine before -- F9 through F11 (also, Windows Vista has normal display)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a new install of Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit) installed and I am noticing that on the top right corner where it shows the connection status, specifically the wired connection, it has a white box around it. I have tried changing the themes to something different but it is showing this on all the default themes I choose from. (Specifically Ambiance and New Wave). I am attaching a screen shot to show exactly what I am talking about. I am also using the Nvidia drivers (recommended version).

But it keeps freezing up on me (sometimes a solid white screen, other times with vertical lines on a white background) and then becomes non-responsive. Sometimes there is a small (about 1in) square where the mouse was when it froze.I have a fairly old computer (emachines T6522). Is there something I can do to keep it from crashing?

It only seems to happen when I'm running off mains power, and screen brightness is 100%. Stops when I lower the screen brightness.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 off a desktop. I was using it for quite a while up until last night when out of nowhere while surfin', and browsing, the screen just turned white, I've tried restarting by powering off manually, as I couldn't get it to any other way. After the computer restarts, it might flash black for a sec a couple of times, then back to being white again, the BIOS screen doesn't even show up. It sounds like in the background the computer might still be loading up. My monitor is a 21"LCD, if that means anything?

This most notably happens when I have Firefox and LibreOffice open in the same desktop. The window in the background is clearly visible, and when I right click on the window in the foreground, a normal context menu comes up. This also sometimes happens when there is only one window on a desktop.
I have played on and off with ubuntu over the years, and am currently using 11.04 on an older HP with an Athlon 64 chip. You may consider my background knowledge of the system to be one step above nil. I'm happy to provide any system info you may want, but you'll likely have to tell me how to obtain it.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

I'm having the same problem I had with ubuntu, I get a white screen when trying to load the graphical install after the media test. On ubuntu this was solved by selecting simple graphics mode. Here I have tried the following commands during install with still no luck
The text install just freezes after selecting the keyboard layout so that does not even work. Tried searching for forums but only solutions I could find where the previous.
