Ubuntu :: Unusable White Windows After Upgrade To Natty
May 2, 2011
I have never been more diappointed in the new user experience after an os upgrade. No, not even Vista was this diappointing. Unity just isn't for me. That's ok, I can just stick to Ubuntu Classic. As for the problem: I cannot use many of my applications. When I launch something, Firefox for example, all I see is a window filled with white. There is a title bar and nothing else. Sometimes, if I am really lucky, switching to something else then coming back fixes it. Usually it does not fix it, and can even cause other apps to go all white. This has happened in every app I have tried (I have tried a lot of them). It also happened under both Unity and Gnome.
My normal web browsers have not worked once since I upgraded. In general, the applications that seem to work most often are simpler ones. I am writing this post using w3m since it was the only way I could get this box online now... Does anyone have any advice for fixing this problem? This is not the first time I have been burned by a X.04 release. I might have to reinstall maverick...

I recently upgraded to Natty (11.04). Looks great but: I can't use it when my laptop (dell latitude E6410) is plugged in my dell docking station. It seems like the attached monitor (DVI) does not get signal input and hence turn to sleep mode.I can say that Ubuntu is still running fine when I unplug it from the docking station.I am using the NVidia driver 270.41.06 (installed as a third party driver by the install process).I can successfully connect and configure an external monitor thru the VGA port.

I've been unable to resolve this problem for the past weeks and have come as far as I can trying to fix it on my own. I have a fresh install of 11.04 on a Shuttle ST20G5 with a Radeon Xpress 200g chipset. After 5-10 minutes of usage in X, it freezes solid (no response to alt-sysreq) and displays a white screen (sometimes with a pattern). I believe it's a kernel issue.
Things I've tried but still resulted in crashes:
- Switching to VESA graphics
- Running failsafe / Recovery Console X
- Downgrading X server to 2.09
- Running latest X server via ppa (at least, I think I did this. Maybe I didn't)
- Upgrading kernel to 2.6.39-0 via ppa
- Running the live cd
I get no warnings or errors of note in xsession-errors or kern.log
I have not been able to catch the error or obtain any troubleshooting info. When it crashes, it just crashes.

After installing 11.04, I have enabled the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I see this (picture of problem is attached) at startup and shutdown. About nine out of 10 times, I cannot get to the log in screen (even in recovery mode); however, on the tenth try, everything works properly and I can even play games, ex. Braid and World of Goo. I get about 3700 fps running glxgears.
I have run nvidia-settings and dpkg and various other things in an attempt to get it sorted out. Additional Drivers says that the "driver is activated but not currently in use." I'm not sure why that is.

A couple days ago a made a dist-upgrade on ubuntu 10.10, soon after that all my compiz effects were completely disable and i'm not able to get it back on. In the "effects" bar on appearance when i change it to either normal or advance, just says it wasn't able to activate the effects. On compiz-config manager, composite, opengl and gnome compatibility don't activate when selected and doesn't recognize each other (when activate opengl indicates that needs composite active to work, even if it is already active)

I've been using UNR since the 9.04 release on my Eee 1000HE and have been generally happy with it as a solution since then. Tonight I've upgraded to 10.04 using the package manager and everything starts correctly but when I start any application it minimises itself straight away making the system unusable. If I click on the application to bring it to focus, I get about 1/2 a second of typing before it minimises itself again. Using that method I've been able to get around the problem with a sudo apt-get remove netbook-launcher - but I like the netbook launcher and I'd like to keep using it.

I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.
When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).
I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.

I upgraded to 11.04 yesterday and now my dual monitor setup has no wallpaper! Just a solid white background (screenshot attached). When I log in and out, I see the wallpaper briefly, but I can't get it to display while I'm logged in.
I even tried creating a new user to see if I mucked up my environment somewhere. New user had the same problem.

After upgrading to 10.04LTS, I have this issue with ALL video players. Once the dvd begins to play, all I see is a white screen - no image. However, the sounds plays fine. What can I do to correct this?
Aside from this one issue, everything went fine in the upgrade process and I'm very happy with this new version.

My GTK setup has started to behave strangely - I believe since upgrading to FF 6 . The FF search bar, the Gimp menu and other similar controls are now decorated with a transparent white outline. I do not have any customizations applied and I am unsure how to fix it. Running OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit, GTK 2.22.1, Gnome 2.32.1.

I just purchased a new 2TB Drive External Seagate, My main system uses both Windows and Ubuntu So I am pretty much stuck with keeping my drive as NTFS. I have done this without any problems before but since I got this new drive I have been having issues. When I first load up Ubuntu the drive mounts and runs fine, after an unspecified amount of time i start getting Input/Output errors when accessing the drive. When I goto the Disk Utility I get a message stating the drive is "Unknown or Unused", If I disconnect and reconnect the drive or reboot everything is fine again. There's no errors coming up with S.M.A.R.T and it seems to work fine while under windows.

Upgrade install to 11.04 using unity theme. I get random white screens/panels. first time was the whole login screen, second is the body of notepad but terminal works fine. I can enter content and it works, sometimes if I refresh it draws the body correctly, sometimes when I change focus it does not work. That happened with Firefox. I have everything updated and I have not changed anything. No private drivers to install. I'm guessing its just a setting somewhere.

I'm on Natty since yesterday but I started the day before. My first impression was great. I now had an option top upgrade from 10.10 and not loose my data! So I did. It all went fine until the point where The Upgrade tries to restore my applications. It failed and returned the message:
unbalanced group option, expect badness.
And that was it! And I would have been waiting a very long time if I wasn't looking the details of what's going on because from here and after a 3rd try, I went to sleep online to find out I was still expecting badness the next day. I did a hard reboot and tried login in. I reached the login screen with success but could never login. I was using the encryption options which it seems comes after the restoration of application.
The symptoms are those of a wrong password. I finally did a clean install and restored my data from my backups (wouldn't try something new without a backup). Otherwise, I like Unity. I see a few things that needs polishing here and there but I don't mind using it. I think that voices from people liking it need to be heard as well because they usually don't have a reason to complain and it then looks like every body think Unity is not good.

I'm having lots of trouble with 11.04. Note: everything used to work beautifully on 10.10 for me. I first upgraded and ran into all the problem below, then reinstalled clean and still have the same issues.
1. Terminal screen is unreadable after grub menu. The screen is all white and text is garbage looking. My graphics card is an nvidia fx5200.If I edit the boot option for linux and remove the line 'set gfxpayload = $linux_gfx_mode', the terminal looks normal again.
2. Unity or Compiz or both are broken for me.
Regardless of whether I fix the issue in 1 or leave it there, after booting into X11 my desktop looks like it is blinking. I think my unity keeps restarting. If I disable compiz and use meta city the screen is stable but I have no menus making it useless.
NOTE: I didn't explicitly install any nvidia drivers, not sure if it did it install it automatically as part of the isntallation.
I don't care for Unity (even though it looks kinda nice). I just want my X11 working again with HW acceleration. I am happy to go back to a working gnome except I don't know how. After the upgrade, I was able to switch my driver from nvidia to vesa in xorg.conf and get something usable (but horribly slow), I think it was classic and not unity. However a fresh isntall has a stub for xorg.conf with nothing much in it. If all else fails, I will reinstall 10.10 and wait for a more stable 11 release.
Update: I used to tick automatic login which took it straight to unity which meant I ran into 2. and made this version unusable. If I untick this option on installation I can at least switch to classic and use my desktop.

Since upgrading my former Karmic/Lucid/Maverick laptop to the Natty beta recently, I've been unable to change anything about my desktop background. Each time I reboot, the background is a different solid color, but I can't change the color nor set a wallpaper image. Here's what I've tried;
- "Appearance Preferences" -> "Background"
- the compiz wallpaper plugin
- gconftool-2/gconf-editor
- xsetroot

obviously natty is flawed. I upgraded as an option in ubuntu studio's update manager. not sure if studio was ment to be upgraded to natty but it was in the manager, as studio is still 10.10 maverick. regardless the results have been disastrous. i am running into problem after problem as apparently many users are.
i had recently done a fresh install of ubuntu studio maverick which seemed perfect. as i was still setting up and restoring until i noticed the option for natty. so while i'm still at it i think i'm going to reinstall 10.10 this is the first imperfect ubuntu upgrade i've experienced but linux still rules.

When I try to upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04 I always get this error:
Code: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
If I run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, I get:
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Leyendo lista de paquetes... Hecho
Creando rbol de dependencias

Apparently there's nothing wrong in apt.log, but i cannot upgrade and i don't know how to fix it. Any clue?

When upgrading from 10.10 on my machine, Natty set the default boot image as 2.6.38-8-generic-pae, which didn't boot (stuck at the start image: ubuntu logo with 5 red circles). I can boot to 2.6.38-8-generic if I go into previous versions. Everything, best I can tell, works fine after doing this. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to Ubuntu. How can I uninstall/remove the 2.6.38-8-generic-pae image since it clearly doesn't work? Why would it have set this as my default image in GRUB? How can I set the normal image as default in GRUB?

I have a dell optiplex 755 with ATI HD Radeon 2400 XT graphics using ATI Catalyst 11.4 driver. Since my upgrade to Natty, graphics have been choppy in both Unity and Classic. I've tried tweaking just about everything I could in compiz, and Catalyst. I've found when I disable a few certain plugins in CCSM (Bailer and Detection) my screen flickers and graphics are smoother (wobbly windows, cairo dock/launcher's hide animation) but I lose shadows and composite (when in Classic Gnome there is a black box behind cairo dock) and a few other things, which is weird because I still have window animations and other effects. Sometimes I also get a completely gray window with no window decoration/contol buttons that I cannot close, when I disable these settings.
I've also found that when I disable "Sync to VBlank" animations are smoother and then even more choppy, sporadically.

Since my upgrade to 11.04, ubuntu has been running real slow. When I click on the firefox icon on the side bar, it literally takes over 3 seconds to start opening up. And the same thing goes for folders. Is there something I need to tweak to fix this? And my computer is pretty fast on its own, vista runs very fast on it if that says something.

I just updated my work laptop to Natty: perfect. My home server: perfect. My oldish home laptop: no more wireless. [I use wicd instead of Knetwork (or whatever it's called) because I want a permanent connection no matter the user]
I have a D-Link DWA-645. I get the whole stage: connecting, authenticating, etc... and bad password at the end. The password is correct (hasn't changed during upgrade). I also tried disabling WPA and it still won't connect. That's wlan2.
I also tried with an older PCMCIA card that _used_ to work on ubuntu 9, but stopped on version 10: a D-LinkDWL-G650. It doesn't even show up as wlan0 as it used to. I also tried with a USB-wifi DWL-G122 which has always worked on every version of Ubuntu [I don't normally use it because it's not practical on a laptop]. I see it as wlan1, but same thing: won't connect. Note that like with wlan2 I can scan for networks and see several around. For instance:
Code:
$ iwconfig
IEEE 802.11bg
ESSID: off/any
Mode: managed
Access point: not associated
Tx power: 20 dBm
Retry long limit: 7
[Code]...
[Edit]
Some more info: the access point works fine, I can connect with another device. The driver in use by Ubuntu is ath9k. Using KnetworkManager instead of wicd doesn't change anything.

No protocol specifiedxcb_connection_has_error() returned true The Pulse Audio wiki suggests that this might be an access rights problem: [URL]...hts_are_broken I tried that, but with no success.
Anyone else had this problem? And any ideas about how I can diagnose and fix this?

I have not been able to clone my drive since the upgrade to Natty. This was never a problem for me in 'any' previous distro. I have a dual boot Windows 7/Natty system; and I never have a problem with the Windows partition getting cloned. partclone (Clonezilla) crashes about an hour and 15 min into the cloning of the Ubuntu partition. I'm getting a "buffer-overflow" error. I'm using clonezilla-live-1.2.5-35-amd64; and have been since Lucid. I've recently downloaded clonezilla-live-1.2.8-42-amd64.iso and am burning it to DVD now. I don't know if this is going to help; but I'm ready to try anything; as this is my only means of disaster recovery! During the reboot into Natty, I received some error messasges stating that there were inode problems. I don't know if this was on the source or destination drive; as I still had the destination drive connected to my USB port. Then I started thinking... What package, that wasn't there in Maverick, that is present in Natty messes with inodes???
Then I thought ZeitGeist So I ripped it and everything connected to it out-by-roots and tried running Clonezilla again; but no luck...Has anyone else had this problem; and what can I do about it I've replaced all of the relevant hardware; and two days and $500 later, I still don't have a solution.
