OpenSUSE :: Fatal Error : "no Read / Write Permission To Inbox Folder"

Nov 26, 2010

Following the last update bringing kmail 2.0.89 it does not start any more. I get a popup signaling a fatal error : "no read/write permission to your inbox folder". But these permissions have not changed. And even if I move away the Mail folder and try to start kmail I get the same message.

[code]...

This kmail version given by YAST is : 4.5.80-261.1

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive - Error "read / Write Permissions" On The Folder Properties

Dec 16, 2010

i borrowed an external hard drive from my friend to back up a load of stuff on my windows partition before reinstalling it. I am doing this through ubuntu. I am trying to zip up folders like My Documents etc and chuck them on the external hard drive but it always comes up with errors to do with read/write permissions. In the permissions tab on the folder properties of the ext hard drive it says I am owner but i have no file access (only folder access is create and delete files). When i try to give myself read/write permission it just goes straight back to nothing when i look at it again.

Ubuntu Servers :: Running Php Files Without Setting Read / Write Permission?

Jun 26, 2010

On an Apache2 server someone else setup, I have a folder with drwx--x--x permission and the php file can still write in the folder. But on my own setup, I need to set the same folder to drwx--x-wx. Inside the folder, I have a index.php that runs just by setting rwx--x--x but on my own setup, I need to allow read permission for others/group before it can run: rwxr-xr-x (or else I get a blank page). I tried changing the folder and files to root but it's the same.

Slackware :: Optical Drive Not Identified - Get Permission To Read / Write In The Device

Aug 6, 2010

On one of my machines the DVD/DVDRW/CDROM drive appears as /dev/hdc and is not identified as an optical drive by HAL. It is owned by root: disk and thus no users get permission to read/write in the device (not even those in the cdrom group). This stops playing DVDs, ripping CDs, no notifications appear when a disk is inserted, etc. etc. When I set the permissions for all to read/write from the device then users can access but still no notifications are shown.

On all my other machines the optical drive is identified as /dev/sr0 and is owned by root:cdrom . All have Slack 13.1 . Previously with Slack 12.2 this machine still had the drive in /dev/hdc but the permissions were right (I think because I added it to /etc/fstab with options for users to access it). I believe the problem is down to HAL not setting this drive to the correct group, but how do I fix it? I hate HAL, it has a mind of its own, just like in the scifi movie

Ubuntu :: No Write Permission Even Though User Is Member Of Folder Group?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm having an odd problem (although I'm probably missing something obvious to a non-semi-newbie):I have a directory used for samba shares which is owned by user fred, a system user which the windows clients on my network authenticate with to access the shares. I, roger, want to access the directories without having to put my 'sudo boots' on every time, so I made the directory group users and added roger to that group, and changed the file/folder modes from 0755 to 0775.However I still do not have write permissions inside the directory; I still seem to be considered 'other' and hence only have read and execute.

Debian Installation :: Cannot Write Grub To Boot Location - Fatal Error

Jun 10, 2011

I have been following this tutorial [URL]. When I get to the end of the installation and try to install GRUB to the /boot partition I have set up it throws a fatal error at me. No explanation other than it can't write to the specified location. I double checked all the partition settings which were the same as the tutorial then skipped the GRUB installation and finished. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is that the 250MB partition size specified for /boot in the tutorial is too small.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Evolution IMAP Connection Error "while Refreshing Folder INBOX"

May 2, 2011

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 - from 10.10, and now experiencing connection problems with Evolution connecting to my IMAP Microsoft Mail Server. This was working, I was successfully receiving and sending mail via my IMAP setup in Evolution. Since the upgrade to 11.04, it stopped working with the error: "Error while Refreshing folder "INBOX". You must be working online to complete this operation." I check to see if it's in online mode, and it is. I set evolution to work in offline mode. Then I set it back to "online mode" and I get the error: "Error while Reconnecting to 'IMAP Server mail.foo.blah.de.bla". Could not connect to mail.foo.blah.de.bla: Connection Refused"

This is weird, today I updated my system and while trying to visudo from single user mode got

"cannot read /etc/shadow: Permission denied"

which kept me from doing anything until I switched to file permissions of 400 on shadow, then back. Is this being experienced by anyone else or just me? /etc/security/limits.conf doesn't seem like it wants to change in enforcing mode either and I can't find any alerts to provide clues on the situation.

Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Is Unable To Write Email To The Inbox

Jun 25, 2010

I'm running GNOME under Lucid on a 64-bit machine. Here's the background: Yesterday, I tried to delete a subfolder of my Local Folders directory. Right-clicking on the subfolder offered the usual menu of options including "Delete", but selecting "Delete" left the folder in place. In floundering around trying things to solve the problem, I tried opening Thunderbird from the command line, using "sudo thunderbird", following which I succeeded in deleting the recalcitrant subfolder. Here's the first stage in the problem:

But when I next opened Thunderbird in ordinary mode (i.e., as "ron" not as "superuser"), I discovered that the Inbox was no longer accessible. Clicking on "Get Mail" yielded only a small wheel-icon that spins, presumably showing activity in progress, without actually finishing by getting mail. The other various folders seemed to operate normally, in that they showed their contents when clicked on.

OpenSUSE Network :: NFS Permission Denied When Trying To Write?

Jun 29, 2010

i have client and server PCs, both with openSuse 11.2.

on the server side, i have mounted HD partition to /vmshare dir. relevant line in /etc/fstab reads:

Code:
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD3200AAJS-07B4A0_WD-WCAT16493946-part2 /vmshare reiserfs user,acl 1 2
i want to export /vmshare dir via nfs. i have configured it through yast and resulting line in /etc/exports reads:
Code:
/vmshare *(rw,root_squash,sync,no_subtree_check,crossmnt)
the permissions for this directory is drwxrwxr-x root vmshare.

i can successfully mount the exported dir on client side, i can move between directories and list contents, but i can't write into it (not even as a root). on the server side, i can write to the directory only as root. the vmshare group is created on both machines with same gid as well as all users have same uids. firewalls are down.y.

OpenSUSE Network :: Mount NAS But Only Have Read Only Permission

Sep 11, 2011

I am completely new to Linux and picking things up slowly. I have a question about mounting my NAS NV+. When I mount it, i use the following commands when logged on as user "matt":

sudo mount -t cifs -o rw,username=Matt,password=matt //192.168.2.15/Matts /home/matt/GRUMPY/Matts
sudo mount -t cifs -o rw,username=Matt,password=matt //192.168.2.15/Torrents /home/matt/GRUMPY/Torrents
sudo mount -t cifs -o rw,username=Matt,password=matt //192.168.2.15/Media /home/matt/GRUMPY/Media
sudo mount -t cifs -o rw,username=Matt,password=matt //192.168.2.15/Programs /home/matt/GRUMPY/Programs

GRUMPY is the name of my NAS by the way! It mounts properly, BUT i cannot delete or rename files, so basically the user "matt" has read only privileges, and root has ownership of the mount. How do I go about mounting these so that user "matt" has RW privileges?

When I log on as root user and mount them, I can read and write as required, so this has led me to believe that my problem lies in my permissions for matt when mounting them... I posted on the netgear forum and was asked to try and mount using the following command:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Finding A External USB CD/DVD Read/write Device?

Jul 30, 2011

My wife is purchasing a netbook with no internal CD/DVD writing device, so we plan to purchase an external CD/DVD USB-2.0 read/write device. Our local PC shop has the following 3 external USB-2.0 DVD read/write devices:

(a) Samsung DVD-Burner SE-S084F/RSBS [not listed on Samsung site - too old ? ]

(b) LG DVD-Burner GE24NU21 USB2.0 [not listed on LG site - too old ? ]

(c) Super-Multi Portable DVD Rewrite (GP10 Lite USB2.0 Slimline) GP10NB20 (mentions Mac OS/X support, which is encouraging)

None of those are listed in the openSUSE HCL. Has anyone successfully used any of these with GNU/Linux (my google surfing on this revealed no GNU/Linux complaint nor any success stories) ? Or is there another such external USB-2.0 read/write DVD burner device that is recommended ?
