View 2 RepliesIm assuming there is a simple answer for this but I have yet to find it in forums. I have 2 partitions mounted on my ubuntu desktop, one is Windows C: drive labeled "Core" and the other is D: drive labeled "Reserve" but for some reason I have a second Windows folder on my desktop, when I attempted to delete it it began to delete the Windows files as well, one forum said to right click and "remove from desktop" but this option isnt in the menu. How can I just delete the folder?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Apache on Lucid Lynx (Macbook 1.1) using the following tutorial: [URL] Everything appears to work correct except that when I browse http://localhost/ in Firefox, I cannot see any of the directories. Although, files such as html documents are visible. When I view the /var/www directory using the default graphical file browser, all of its child directories have Xs over their icons. When I attempt to open the directory "js", the following error message displays:The folder contents could not be displayed.
You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "js".
I figured this was preventing Firefox from viewing the directories. So I launched it with the "gksu" command to see if it would help. I still couldn't see directories when browsing http://localhost/ I'm basically trying to achieve functionality identical to the MAMP local server for Mac OS X. I'm about to start a LAMP project for a new client so having this up and running is important!

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to recreate all the folders from one directory to another without copying over the contents of the folder? I've been trying to do something like this,
Code:for i in `ls $X`; do mkdir $PATH/$i; doneUnfortunately $i is deliminated by whitespaces in the filenames and not the actual folders.
$X contains only other folders so I dont have to worry about regular files but any kind of more "advanced" solution would work.
I should know this but I figured I'd ask before I screw something up.
What is the command to cp just and only the contents of a folder, not the folder itself, into a new folder?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI also am having problems with 11.04 and the Unity desktop. In particular when I ask Evolution to Back Up its settings, I get the error message "The folder contents could not be displayed" "Operation not supported". I've used this operation many times on earlier versions of Ubuntu. I've tried removing and re-loading Evolution, but no difference.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to run Starcraft 2 from the installation folder I kept from my previous windows install, and when I double-click the .exe I get an error that says it doesn't have permission to run as an executable. So I checked out the properties page, permissions tab, and for some ungodly reason none of the changes I make stick. The second I click the check box for "Run as an exectuable" it unchecks. I have no idea what to do and I've scoured the net looking for an answer. I'd prefer to avoid redownloading it (didn't buy the retail version) but it's looking like my only option at this point.

Code:

bash: /mnt/cgroups/cpu/19088/notify_on_release: No such file or directory

I am trying to ssh into my server that I do have ssh installed on and have followed instructions carefully on ssh_config. My problem is that when I try to ssh from my desktop PC terminal into the server with ssh shack1@192.168.1.80, I get in return, shack1@192.168.1.80's password: I type in the password and I then get, Permission denied, please try again. I am putting in the correct password and am stumped......Please excuse my ignorance in this I have been using Ubuntu Desktop for 2-3 years and have been doing decent and am trying to venture out a bit.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know that you can use ls to list the files in a folder, but is there anyway to list the contents of the other folder? Like, say I have a folder labelled "Records", and inside is 12 folders, one for each month. Is there any way to list the contents of the 12 subfolders without just going into each one with cd and using ls?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a very simple back up script to back up the contents of one folder on my system to an NTFS formatted external hdd. I want to keep the ownerships and permissions of the files I'm backing up intact so I'm putting them into a tar archive. Compression is not necessary as I have plenty of space for the backup.
I have created the initial backup with the following command:
Code:
tar -cpf $bupath/backup.tar $sourcepath
This seemed to work quite well with the resulting file being about 170gb and took about 5hrs. For subsequent backups, the files are probably only going to change by about 10% at most so it seems inefficient to create a whole new backup from scratch. I would like to be able to just update my existing archive with any new/altered files.
I have tried using the update mode (-u) with tar like so:Code:
tar -upf $bupath/backup.tar $sourcepath
So far this has been running for about 10hrs and the archive has grown to approx 220gb! What's going wrong here? I was expecting the update to take 30mins max and there be no significant change in the archive size. Am I perhaps misinterpreting the purpose of update mode in tar, or is there something wrong with my command? Is there a better/easy way to accomplish this?
In trying to install an update, I deleted all the programs from my Ubuntu 9.10. Now I can not get my pictures, documents and music from the computer. I tried booting from a Ubuntu Live CD but when I get to the folder of my documents it says "you do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "My_Folder"". I tired the nautilus command but that only lets me view the files and not copy them.

How can I permanently erase them?
I'm dipping my toes into some bash scripting and was wondering if there was a way to delete a file not based on how old it is, but rather how many other files are currently in the folder... or something to that effect....
What I'm doing is creating a script to back up a folder nightly. I'd like to keep a maximum of 3 backups. However in case the script for some reason fails to run one night (computer turned off possibly) I don't want to set the condition for deletion to be the date.
I know that if I run:
Code:
find /path/to/files* -mtime +3 -exec rm {} ;
that it will delete everything older than three days. -atime and -ctime don't seem to be what I"m looking for... is there another command I can use to achieve what I"m trying to?
