OpenSUSE :: Copy Files In Alphabetical Order?
Feb 8, 2010
I need to copy my music to a portable HDD in alphabetical order. My headunit in my car will only display the folders and files in the order that they were written to the disk so to have any form of logic to the album / track listings they need to be written to the disk in alphabetical order.
how to do this in openSUSE? I know dolphin doesn't do this.

This problem has been here for 2 months or so:
If I, in VLC, choose a folder with several mp4 or other multimedia format files, it will show em in the playlist in random order, definitively not alphabetical. that didnt use to happen before.

I have a server with what appears to have 352 home directories (350 actually if you omit '.' & '..') & I am being asked to basically tally a list of whom all 350 users are in alphabetical order. Now I could sit here for days doing the 'finger' command to obtain their full name commented in '/etc/passwd' file but I would assume there is a script or way I could have Linux quirry the '/etc/passwd' file & take all the user 'comment' entries and export them to a list in alphabetical order. Does anyone know if this could happen and if so, how would I do something like this? I can't write bash / shell scripts to save my life
Code:
cmennens@mail]:/$ ls -l
total 160
drwxr-xr-x 352 root root 12288 Oct 21 13:41 home

I'm trying to get Chinese filenames to be listed in alphabetical order according to pinyin. Long ago I remember having to install a particular package for that to happen, but in the past year or so I believe that ubuntu at least was doing that automatically. On my most recent linux installation, however, I find that it's not sorting file names by pinyin order. I'm wondering if I have forgotten to install something this time.

I have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m.I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files).Of course this is a -first-find the *.m files script and -then copy the files into the hard disk.What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk.As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary.So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has

I'm currently running Meerkat beta AMD64. I've been using Audacious in Ubuntu for years, before that I used XMMS.
In Windoze I used to use Winamp. Winamp has a plugin called gen_yar. Gen_yar would allow you to right-click on the playlist and copy your current playlist files in track order to any folder on your hard drive, or to a USB mounted mp3 player/thumb drive, whatever.
It had several checkboxes in the settings.
1) Rename the files adding the track number as the prefix (01_, 02_, etc).
2) Create a .m3u playlist of the tracks in that new folder using #EXTINF: instead of the full path. That way I can copy that folder to any gadget or another computer and the playlist will still play those files.
Here is the Winamp Plugin: gen_yar (Yar-matey!_Playlist_Copier) [URL] There's a link to the source code at the bottom of that site if that helps.
Here's another: Winamp Plugin Save Playlist In Order [URL]
I have yet to see this feature in any Linux media software. I've tried just about all of them. The only thing close would be drag-n-drop playlist files from Rhythmbox.
Does anybody know of a plugin for Audacious or Rhythmbox that will do this?
Alternatively, is there a Nautilus script that when I right click on a folder full of mp3s, it will create a playlist of files in that folder, and save that playlist file inside the folder (without the full paths as mentioned above)?
I hate having to boot into Virtual Box just to use Winamp to create portable playlists.

I am runnig WinXP and OpenSUSE 11.4 on dual boot.Generaly i am using SUSE, XP only for UpNP Media Center(server) to watch movies stored on my computer on TV via STB.For this i am using TVersity for wich i not found yet Linux alternative - or better say - i found it but is too heavy for my PC(P4 1.6 Mhz, 768 MB RAM, an dinosaur from Nvidia Vanta with 64 MB RAM)But this is not a part of my question.My question is how to transfer(copy, move...?) files from SUSE to WinXP?A large files like avi, mkv, mostly movies.I solved this to copy them on USB and then from USB to Win.This is a very slow proces because my PC have only USB 1.0And before asked me - all files are legaly downloaded from paysites.From SUSE, partitions(disks), folders and files under WinXP are visible but is not possible to copy files on them - acces is denied.Is there any way to do this?Suse is insatlled on LVM - /root/home/swapI am interesting ONLY to copy files from SUSE to Win, not at al from Win to SUSE.Code:

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

I have installed opensuse 11.3 64 bit. For many years was able to connect to a file server within our domain via konqueror in all previous versions of opensuse using: smb://user@server.ip.adress/userdata/user_name/
This would ask me a password and then I would be able to move, read, create and delete files. I never configured samba on the linux client because this method always worked. However very recently (I suspect since I installed 11.3) I am facing a problem I cannot resolve. I can still log in, browse the remote folder, read files, create new ones (for example a txt file), delete them, but I cannot copy into that remote folder files larger than about 20KB (I try copying or moving files by dragging them from my desktop into the konqueror window that shows the remote folder contents).
Small files are OK, but for files are larger than ~20KB there is an error saying: Could not write to file smb://{path_to_my_file_in_the_remote_folder}. Strangely, the file is nevertheless created in the remote folder, but with a fixed length size of 32KiB.

If I execute the following command:
cp -R /myfiles /mydestination
If myfiles contains several sub-directories and files, in what order will they be copied? For example, directories might be named 0123a, 9993c, myfolder, xfolder.
They are not copied in alphabetical order OR in date order OR in the order they appear when using a standard ls command as far as I can tell, so what actually does determine the order?
Edit:
I am trying to determine the order that the cp command uses in order to determine how far along my copy command made it before it stopped. For example, I was hoping to be able to determine it copied 3 of the 4 directories successfully.

Is there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.

Using PHP 5.x. I would like to sort a set of values first numerically, then alphabetically. For example, here's my code so far:
Code:
<?php
print "<p style="font-family:verdana;font-size:10pt">
";
$myArray = array("1223:starfruit", "34112:oranges", "1223:zucchini", "321:apples", "34112:pears", "1223:tomatoes");
[code]....
I have fiddled with array_multisort but I can't seem to get my head around it or the many sort routines in PHP.

If transfer all files under a directory by rsync, what is the order that rsync determines to transfer the files one by one?At first it looked like rsync transfers files in alphabetical order, but later I found rsync skipped some files in the first sweep through the alphabetic order, and then went back to transfer files that were skipped in the first time and this time still in alphabetic order.
