Aug 17, 2010S.M.A.R.T.tells me my primary fedora drive has lots of bad blocks,so I ordered a used identical drive from ebay.I want to do the very basic process of making a full backup of my existing drive - so as to replace it with a more or less identical replacement. Logically identical - not necewsarily sector to sector identical.im not literate in unix and its children - and seem to find a plethora of descriptinos of how to do what I want to do. which is
1. format the drive - what you may call low level format - ie op sys independent.
2. create a partition system compatible with my existing disk.
3. copy everything from my existing disk to the new disk.
4. put existing disk on the shelf as a backup and start to use new disk.
General :: Migrated From Ext3-disk To A Ext4 Disk - Warning: Unable To Open An Initial Console
Feb 4, 2010OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:
mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest
modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?

And if files or folder are already on USB disk, it skips copying. So it copies only new files and folders.

Jun 30, 2010I erase XP and do a clean install of 10.04 netbook remix on my Acer AspireOne. Almost everything seems to be working ok (so far.....3hrs after installation and still testing!) except for:
1: My main partition is formatted as ext4, and when I try copy back any (video .iso !) file that is larger than 4.1 gb I get a memory error and so only copies the file incomplete up to 4.1 gb. I know this problem under windows FAT vs NTSF but I have read that ext4 was beyond this... So what did I do wrong? Is the solution to switch the ext4 to ext3 and can this be done without loss of installed programs or files.
2: Video and Sound with video is not good. Lots of disturbance/turbulence and for sure not optimal for both video and sound.
3: my internal micophone is not working in Skype but it does with Sound-Recorder...I connected external mic and this works, but with lots of disturbance. Also the voice sound from telephone calls sound is not as should be.
The "hardware drivers" utility tells me that all is good and no proprietary drivers are in use on the system.

Feb 2, 2011I formatted a 500GB with ext4 format, and placed in a usb box, it showed up, but could not write, copy past etc to it, the same disk was formatted in NTFS, and FAT32 showed up and could do all the above actions, given that ext4/ext4/ext2 are specifically made for Linux, then why on earth they don't get mounted automatically and work normally from usb box and ports?

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Files From Windows From An Ext4 Disk?
Feb 5, 2010I am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

Feb 23, 2011This weekend, I installed Debian Squeeze on my server. I've formatted all the hard disks to EXT4, and I'm using kernel version 2.6.32-686-bigmem.When I tried to install the program saidar, it surprised me why it does not show my hard drives under 'mountpoint' [URL] <-- Saidar screenshot) as I could when I ran with Debian Lenny with the same kernel, but where the hard drives were formatted in EXT3. My laptop which has Ubuntu 10.04 as OS and the hard drive is formatted in EXT4 can easily show the hard drive in saidar.
I also tried to install PHP SysInfo on the Debian computer, but it does not bother to show anything on the hard disks
I tried to check fstab file and I can see that Debian uses UUID to identify the hard drives, but I've tried to change it to something with /dev/sdx, but it did not help either.[URL] (fstab file)
I know that Debian squeeze is very new, but it would be nice if someone could give me a hint what might be wrong, because I am a little tired of all time to use 'du-hs' command To find out how much space is spent on the various drives, since the command is a little slow, since hard disks are well filled.

Aug 19, 2011I tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on my external hard drive (WD My Passport, thats all i remember about the name) and all was well, until I tried to reformat it from ext4 to FAT, and no such luck, it isn't even being READ, not in fdisk -l, not by gparted, disk manager, or anything else. Windows is no help at all... I tried that out of desparation.

Ubuntu :: Make A Backup Of Ext4 Partition Via Clonezilla - Messed Up External Disk
Mar 13, 2010Tuesday night I wanted to make a backup of my Ubuntu ext4 partition via Clonezilla so I configured that an image had to be made and it would be saved on the NTFS external disk. But it said it needed 23 hours to create a 5gb backup, so I resetted my computer as this took too long. But after this, Ubuntu nor Windows recognized my drive.
I called Seagate and they told me after troubleshooting 30 minutes, that there is no option of fixing the drive and I had to send it to RMA. What could be wrong? Clonezilla works via a bootable ISO on Debian. The disk drive is still spinning. I already rebooted the external drive, but it's not working. In Linux the disk is no longer mounted and cannot be mounted:

Hardware :: Permanent Filesystem Corruption On Reiserfs - Ext3 And Ext4 - Disk Failure?
Feb 9, 2010I have been having problems with filesystem corruption on my eeepc 1000H for a long time now. I have tried using different filesystems, kernels and distributions (arch, slackware) to no effect. I am starting to grow suspicious that this problem lies somewhere else, as I haven't seen anyone else having similar problems in such a variety of scenarios.
I have tried testing my ram using memtest86+, didn't come up with anything after a full run through. I also have tried using e2fsck -c to check for bad blocks, it finds none. I had a go at using smartctl but wasn't really sure what I was doing. I did a long test and it came up with nothing anyway.
This problem is in addition to the problems I've been having with my intel graphics chip and KMS. A lot of the time there are lockups when booting into X, which can only be gotten out of by a hard reset. This is sometimes what causes the original filesystem errors. I've stopped messing around with KMS for now to eliminate this but my current system in unbootable. I'm guessing my disk is wrecked but have as yet seen no definitive proof. Can anyone recommend anything that I should do?
I am currently on ext4 with a custom kernel 2.6.33-rc6 (the stock kernel shipping with slackware does not have the elantech extension for psmouse included). When I was using arch, I was just using the stock kernels.

Feb 16, 2011i have an old copy machine (canon gp225). the hard disk makes a whistling noise and i suppose it is just a question of time when it will bust.i do have some stone-aged computers here and i think i could use one of this hard disks as a replacement.how do i get the operating system (probably unix/linux or similar) plus the content of the boot sector plus the software on this new hard disk? i think if i could do a one-to-one copy i might have a chance that i could replace the old hard disk and it will work.

Mar 13, 2009I added another disk to an old Dell Dim2400 that had one HD. It was a blank disk, and instead fo re-loading and re-configuring SuSE, F10, and PCLOS, I did a cp command from another multi-boot computer, like so:

sda is an 80G Seagate, with SuSE, F10, and PCLOS.
sdd is an 80G Western Digital.
The copy went perfect. It begins to load SuSE in the old Dell, showing new peripheral hardware, but it stops when it realizes it's on a WD and not on a Seagate. The line is something like, 'Looking for dev/by-uid=xxx-123-Seagate-yyy'. It asks if I want to go to the next device to boot up. I enter 'NO', because it will go to Windows.
It then exits to 'bin/sh' prompt (or something close (shell?)).
Can I boot LiveCD and modify this so it completes the load?
Fedora :: Won't Boot Past BIOS ?
Jul 28, 2009I've had FC11 x86_64 running for awhile based on an upgrade from FC10. I powered down one night then when I tried to boot the next day the system just sat at the BIOS prompt "Verifying DMI pool data...". I opened the case to check all cables - all fine. I've run a memtest, also fine. I then suspected a bad HDD so I ran the Seagate tools from the Ultimate Boot CD (fast test) and both HDDs came up fine. BIOS can see both disks fine, too. I stuffed around with fixmbr and fixboot and got one step further, with it sitting at "invalid operating system" or something like that. I was able to use Linux rescue mode to mount the old filesystems fine.
Today I've completely blown away all my old partitions and started from scratch. After successfully completing an install with custom disk layout (identical to old layout) it still just sits at "Verifying DMI pool data..". Do I have a bad sector in my boot block? Possible BIOS issue? Is there some tool to re-write the boot block?

Jul 17, 2010I spend the vast majority of my time in Ubuntu, but every so often I still encounter the odd errand that requires a free copy of Windows that came with my hardware.
So I have Windows 7 on my laptop which I like slightly better than XP and a whole lot better than Vista. I am not in there a lot besides that its required for a web design class and sometimes for a few stubborn games, but I would very much like to copy my Windows 7 partition to a 100gb partition on my TB HDD.
How do I do it? Keep in mind, I am barely two tiers above noob on a scale of 1 to 20. I am working on it though.
I also want this partition to be bootable. I dont care if I lose the rest of the data on the disk. I want to redo everything anyway. I definitely want it to boot though, not just for the data to exist.

Dec 11, 2010I'm trying to clone a 2GB USB memory stick to another stick just like it (same size and brand). The src drive has three partitions, one fat, one ext2 and one encrypted (in that order). It also has an mbr. I create the clone using the following command:
dd if=/dev/xxx of=/dev/xxx bs=512k conv=noerror,notrunc
Once it's done the mbr, the ext2 and the encrypted partitions seem fine, but the fat one is slightly modified on the clone. Here is a hex dump of the (broken) clones fat partition followed by a dump of the original partition.
