OpenSUSE :: Archive Method That Preserves The Same Information As Rsync -a?

May 11, 2011

Right now I use "rsync -a" to sync my zimbra directory with another directory as a backup. I'd like to archive that backup (zip....rar....etc etc) in such a way that it preserves the same information as rsync -a would (symlinks, permissions.... Etc etc). Does anyone know of such an archive method? My goal is to have it so that if I uncompress the file, the result should match exactly what my zimbra was at the time of backup.

Ubuntu Servers :: RSYNC With Archive Backup

Sep 15, 2010

I have a Linux host acting as an ISCSI server for a Windows box. I want to keep an off site backup, so I figure rsync will keep the ISCSI server synced with an offsite Linux host. I understand that Rsync does block level incremental transfer to conserve bandwidth ok, awesome. The trick is, that I also want an archival copy kept. Say I want to go back to a revision of a file from 10 days ago, I need to be able to do that.

I was planning on using Backup Exec, since we currently have a licensed copy. Throw the archives from Backup Exec onto the ISCSI server as well, and have it keep a rotating 30 day backup, or something like that. The issue I see here is that this will be creating a deleting files as it does its daily backup rotation. I'm guessing RSYNC will see these as new files, and likely retransmit everything on a daily basis. The question then becomes, is this assumption correct, or will it still know to do a block level incremental transfer even when file names and such are changing?

Server :: Rsync "skipping Non-regular Files" With Archive Option?

Apr 29, 2010

According to the man page, rsync should copy "special" and "device" files if the corresponding options are set. Also the man page says that the -a option (--archive) includes the -D option, which is "same as --devices and --specials". BUT We use the -a option, and still get the following in our report:

skipping non-regular file "pristine/dev/full"
skipping non-regular file "pristine/dev/null"
skipping non-regular file "pristine/dev/ptmx"

[code]....

Is this the expected behavior? (BTW this is copying a non-running linux-vserver called 'pristine')

OpenSUSE :: Exclude Files From A ZIP Archive?

Mar 21, 2010

opensuse v11.2, linux 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop x86_64
ZIP v2.32

I wish to exclude some files from a zip archive. On other OSes to exclude an entire directory I would use the "-x" option like so:

Code:
zip -r archive-name * -x dir1/* Simple. And just add "-x"'s as needed (or use an exclusion file).

Not how it works here, it would seem. AFAICT all "-x" options are ignored. (The entries in an exclusion file also.) For instance, "-x diy/mplayer/*" should ignore everything in the <diy/mplayer> directory. It does not. I have tried fully qualified paths as well; no joy.

What is different about ZIP on linux?

OpenSUSE :: Run IBUS Input Method On 11.2?

Jan 16, 2010

I just heard about the newly developed input method IBUS (ibus - Project Hosting on Google Code) the other day. Supposedly, it fixes a number of problems of SCIM (which, unfortunately, is pretty much dead upstream), and both Ubuntu and Fedora are moving toward making IBUS the standard input on their systems.

Interestingly, there's nothing on the openSUSE forums yet, so this thread is supposed to fill the void and become, eventually, a how-to guide for running IBUS on openSUSE 11.2. I've tried to get IBUS running the past few days, but without succcess so far. Perhaps some of you how got it up and running already can help me out?

[Code]...

The IBUS website also mentions the repository Index of /repositories/home:/swyear for openSUSE, but as far as I can see, the IBUS files don't exist there anymore.

All operation result in a seperate window displaying the progress of the compression but with an error.

Error 127, cannot execute requested operation.

Then when the progress bar reaches full it resets and then resets again continuing the same loop with it becoming slower with every repetition. There is no information posted in the report log of the window. Except that the task has started.

I'm trying to simply archive a file and password protect it. This shouldent be such a difficult task.

P7zip also gives me its own set of errors when archiving.

(sudo) zypper ref virtualbox
upgrade to the latest Sun VirtualBox

OpenSUSE :: Language Input Method Setup In 11.4?

Mar 11, 2011

I just switched back from Mint 10, and while setting to work different input method apps like SCIM and Ibus, bumped into a problem(welcome back to SUSE). After installing Scim, my chinese input works only on one application (Goldendict), it doesn't work in any other app. So I tried Ibus, same result. SO far nothing helped me to make them work. What I 'm trying to find out. Is where I can setup language input method in SUSE, I haven't found such an option anywhere in KDE, yast. WHile in Mint there is such an option, where you can change your inpud method either to scim, xim, scim-bridge or ibus. I tried qtconfig, there I found it, P.S. Warning rage words!: I feel like I should say it. But my previous SUSE experience and overall usage history proves that there is no better distro than Ubuntu nowadays, this is sad indeed, cause I used to start from SUSE. But its true, SUSE is a real pain in the ***, when it comes to getting things done. It seems like whenever u try to setup something there is always a bad feeling of failure. Don't know, but again I'm been consecutively annoyed but its numbness. I'm sorry, cause I feel like I disregard ppl's hard work and support.

OpenSUSE Install :: Method To Migrate 11.3 System To 11.4

Jun 17, 2011

I am currently considering migrating an openSUSE X86-64 system from 11.3 to 11.4. There seem to be 2 possibilities, upgrade or reinstall. Opinion seems to be divided on the process of upgrading from the DVD.I have not been able to find any reasonable guide to using either method to migrate an 11.3 system to 11.4 and have the 11.4 system in the same working state as the 11.3 system was. What I have found for the reinstall method is trivial. for the upgrade method I have seen a reference to running rcrpmconfigcheck but I have been unable to find a man page for it on my 11.3 system or via google.

Does such a guide exist? It should be created by the openSUSE project for each release. If it works the upgrade process looks to be the best method. The last 2 migrations were via the install method. 10 to 11 but also 32 to 64 bit and then 11.1 to 11.3 onto a new machine before moving the data across. Both rebuilds took many days.I have seen many posts saying that it is very quick to rebuild the system. As little as 2 hours has been quoted. I have not yet seen an explanation of how they do it. I suspect that they rebuild systems regularly and have it all scripted or their systems are very simple. An explanation of how it is done would be interesting.Given that I do migrations once or twice a year, building and testing a script to do the migration is probably not worth the effort especially as the only test machine is very old and slow

Server :: Rsync Execution - With Crontab - Have Given Full Path To Rsync Too

Apr 12, 2011

I have a tiny shell script to rsync files between two servers and remove the source files.

This script works fine, when it has been initiated manually or even when the rsync command is executed on the command line.

But the same script doesn't work, when I try to automate it through crontab.

I am using 'abc' user to execute this rsync, instead of root, as root login to servers are restricted in all of our servers, by us.

As I mentioned earlier, manual execution works like charm!

When this rsync.sh is initiated through crontab, it runs the first command(chown abc.abc ...) perfectly without any issues. But the second line is not at all executed, and there is no log entry i can find at /mnt/xyz/folder/rsync.log.

OpenSUSE Install :: What Download Method Is Best For Downloading Suse 11.3 From Website?

Nov 20, 2010

I searched the faq, I did a search online for this etc. The reason I ask is that suse on the download page of 11.3 states don't download directly since it is very slow and has no check sum. Therefore the iso may be flawed and you have spent 10 hrs trying to download the iso. My "fast" internet through qwest is at 1.5 mbps download so I assume that is why it is so slow to download the iso of 4.7 Gb.Now for the question the download page suggets you use bit torrent since it does the checksum but will download the iso no faster than the direct method. Second is to use check metalink with the addon in Firefox downthemall. I did this and had quite a time getting the iso link for 11.3 to start downloading. I would start downthemall from the Firefox toolbar and I thought wow!!! it downloaded that iso fast, how cool. Well it was not the iso but the website for the download page! At one point I got it to start downloading the iso but came in this morining and it was still going after 17hrs and showed several hours to go. I gave up and deleated it.

This afternoon I just gave in and started the download again using the bit torrent and I am waiting for the download to finish. I did eveything the site indicated but after and hour I noticed under logger it said **** openSuse-11.3-DVD i586 iso: PIECE 2206 FAILED HASH CHECK. It shows this same message from the begining of the download 7hrs ago to the last few minutes on each section. It states it is 75% complete? Is this normal or am I wasting 10 more hours? Sorry if this is not the place for this question but I never had trouble with downloading 11.2 and burning it to the disk. I think I just used the Directlink method and crossed my fingers. It did download ok!

General :: Proper Method To Install Slackware / OpenSuSe As Dual Boot?

Jan 5, 2011

I just received my Slackware 13.1 & the 'Official Guide to Slackware Linux' book. I know that there is a big learning curve to use Slackware and that is why I purchased it - according to Distrowatch, "...if you learn Slackware, you learn Linux!" But, while I am 'learning Linux', I would still like to have a linux distro installed that would be more of a 'no-brainer'.

So the question is, which distro should I install first, Slackware or say, OpenSuse? I know that if I were going to dual-boot with XP, that XP should be installed first - does order matter for 2 linux distros too? Also, are there any points to remember to do during the installation processes so that I end up with a working, dual-boot computer?

Server :: Rsync Fails In Cron - Ssh Key - For Rsync?

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server and Postgresql 8.4. I have a .sh script that is run by cron every other hour. That works fine. The .sh script includes an rsync command that copies a postgresql dump .tar file to a remote archive location via ssh. That fails when run by cron; I think because it is (quietly) asking for the remote user's password (and not getting it). I set up the public/private ssh key arrangement. The script succeeds when run manually as the same user that the cron job uses, and does not ask for the password. I am able to ssh to the remote server from the source server (using the same username) and not get the password prompt (both directions), so why doesn't rsync work? I even put a .pgpass file in the root of that user's directory with that user's password, and the user/password are identical on both servers.

I think the problem is rsync is not able to use the ssh key correctly. I tried adding this to my script but it didn't help.

Code:

Here is the rsync command embedding in the .sh script.
