View 1 Replies View RelatedI needed to load Linux on a Samsung Q1Ex for a project I'm contracting on, and could not for the life of me get anything to run. Turns out that the video card is a chrome relative, and for some reason, almost every distro out there (I usually use debian for this sort of project - ie, no money, but use SLES at my day job) failed to even get to textmode console. Trying several distros, I finally put it out there and used OpenSuse and voila!, vga was working. After that, I got X running, and many hours later had the mouse working. The key to this device is Windows. I ended up parsing through the registry looking for "touch" and found that the software in use on Windows is eGalaxTouch. A quick google brought up their site where I found several Linux drivers. I used the beta mode drivers to get the mouse working. Here is a more detailed breakdown.
Use OpenSuse 11.3 (I used the full blown disc - its is the only distro I could get to boot correctly as the others all used OpenChrome, while OpenSuse seems to use fbdev - note here that installing the unichrome drivers will actually break X and cause you to have to reboot to get away from the mess on the screen). Use eGalaxyTouch drivers. The pdf's included in the download have step-by-step instructions but the big pieces are the setup.sh script and the serio_raw steps (note if you perform a 'hwinfo --bios | more' you can figure out which /dev/input/event* you're using - for me it was event1 and serio4). On the video, just stay with the fbdev and you should be good. So far, I've had KDE, Gnome, TWM all running; and now have my EFL apps running! Woohoo! Next piece of the puzzle is to verify sound, but on the face of it, looks like the system recognized it off the bat. And of course one other note. 11.3 is going to make me a convert!
It seems I cannot mount and unmount a USB Drive, it gives me the following error:

I've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.
OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot.However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too.Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.
I am running Suse 11.3 64bit and OpenOffice 3.2.1.4 it installed with the system.OpenOffice's latest is 3.3 something, is there a repository that I can add to continuously update the program? Or do I need to completely remove the present program and install the latest from OpenOffice.org? It would appear that the one that came with the system was pieced together by the Suse team - do they update this at all?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy new HP625 Laptop came with SLED11 preconfigured - including such special keys as the wireless/bluetooth key etc under gnome. I need a 64bit OS and 8Gb for my applications and the HP site does not offer any explicit support for 64bit Linux. So I installed SLED64bit on separate system partition and can select now 32 or 64 bit from GRUB. There remains the problem of configuring gnome (or KDE) on the 64bit system to take advantage of the keyboard, sound, cam etc. I did find a 64bit wireless driver in the i586-Repo on the HP-site that requires the kernel from opensuse 11.3 and I got bluetooth working with gnome but just for the keyboard alone, I am stuck with finding a decent configuration under 64bit. Is it possible to migrate the system wide gnome configuration from the SLED32 bit installation (as configured by HP) to any SuSEx86_64 system?
View 9 Replies View Relatedasus K60IJ intel 4400 dual-core 4gb ram trying to setup suse 11.2 64bit as dual boot. works fine with win7 in dual boot and system boots great. been following forums to setup wireless. after doing all term commands, it see's both built in wireless (atheros ar9285) on the pci-e and the usb verizon broadband modem as (curitel brand modem). after checking kernal dmesg, it see's devices but looking at usr/sbin/iwconfig, it see's no eth0. checked at the asus website and see nothing on getting any kind of ethernet drivers.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to shutdown, logout, reboot using the graphical interface (Menu, Leave and then shutdown,reboot,..), I get the shutdown window and when I press the shutdown button, nothing happens. When I issue in a terminal window 'shutdown -h now' the system shuts down however. Does someone had a simular problem and if so how did they resolve it. Note that I use the 64 bit version of Suse 11.3 on a Dell Precison T5400 with a NVidea G290 card (using the NVidea drivers).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have searched around but found no solution to my problem so here it goes. I can't have any sound on a recently (re)installed Slackware 13.1 64bit. Running alsaconf shows me an option of:hda-intel Nvidia Corporation High Definition Audio Controller hda-intel Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition then I get an ok from ALSA but still no noise... alsactl store tells me that there are no soundcards found. I also get a notification from KDE telling me that the device HDA Intel (ALC269 analog) does not work. See attached KDE1.png

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to try openSuse alongside with Windows Vista and Ubuntu. During the installation Suse wanted to delete my Windows partition. Of course I denied and stopped this installation, but now when starting my computer, the boot menu gives Vista, Ubuntu and Suse as a choice, but if I choose Vista, the Suse installation process is starting instead of Windows, there is no way to get Windows started (fortunately Ubuntu is working so that I can write this message).How can I get Windows starting?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a new 64 bit workstation (Dell Vostro i7) which I usually keep running for extended periods (read; days and weeks). I have realized that the system completely ignores when I insert a USB stick (LaCie 8Gb USB Key). By ignore, I mean it doesn't get mounted, and /media/ is empty. Interesting enough if I go into YAST and probe for Hardware Information, I find my USB stick there under the USB section. There is no specific entry for the key in /etc/fstab by the way, as far as I know I don't need to specify how a USB stick should be mounted. Auto-mount, when it actually works, is perfectly fine.

OK... I tried everything i could think of... but i still cannot get my Open SUSE 11.1 to mount my samba share at boot! I usually unmount it twice using right-click of the mouse, then it mounts itself back, so i have to unmount it again.. Is there any way to control this? How do i setup the auto-mount option for USB flash drives?

Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Ubuntu v10.04 with a wireless card.My desktop is a Dell Optiflex running WinXP.The desktop is connected via ethernet cable to a Linksys wireless router. Certain folders on the desktop are set for sharing. Up until early last week I was able to access the desktop folders from the laptop with no issues.Suddenly I am now getting this error "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share" whenever I try to access the desktop folders from the laptop.I suspect an upgrade is the culprit, but not sure.

First of all: it's been more than 12 years ago since I worked with Linux, and a lot has changed in the meantime. But I considered it a challenge to install Ubuntu 9.10 and lateron upgraded to 10.04 LTS without any troubles, until now:
Except my main partition ("/") all other partitions fail to mount. All NTFS partitions from my other OS and also 2 other linux ext4 partitions I've made are not accessible anymore. and, what bothers me the most: I deleted those 2 new linux partitions in the meantime because I couldn't access them initially because Root was the owner (Duh! root is standard disabled in Ubuntu, right?). After an attempt to try to automount all partitions following the help guides I got now big grey errors on my splashscreen while booting, telling that an error occured with e.g. /media/Backup because it is missing or it cannot be mounted, with 3 options below: waiting, skipping or using a command prompt to solve this. I always choose Skip for safety.
Now if I want to see the content of all my other partitions I got a popup telling me unable to mount e.g. /media/Downloads and the message included:

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. I have installed Ubunutu 10.4 64 bit on my AMD64 computer and most things seem to work fine. Except for burning DVDs. I have a BH10LS30 device which reads CDs and DVDs without problems. Then I wanted to burn a DVD+R (Philips) with the Gnome burn program (which autostarts when inserting a blank DVD+R) and it failed - disk not usable anymore. Then I tried with Brasero (which seems to be the same program) with same result. Then I installed k3b and it failed again - but not destroying the disk, just not touching it. Error messages all like "an unknown error occured".
Then I tried DVD+RW (Sony). That also failed. Then I booted the computer with Knoppix 6 from an USB stick and started k3b. Worked perfectly with the Philips DVD+R disks which failed three times in Ubuntu! What could be the problem? Could it be the 64-bit driver (Knoppix was 32 bit)? Could it be an Ubuntu-Issue?

I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.
