OpenSUSE Wireless :: Traditional (ifup) And Networkmanager Using KDE 11.4
Mar 13, 2011I have just installed 11.4 KDE (having used 11.3 for a while). I was able to use YAST in 11.3 to switch from network manager, to using 'traditional', to connect to wireless network without problems. Since installing (fresh install) 11.4, only network manager seems to work without issue;
using traditional never sets up the wireless connection - or should i say appears not to as no apps will connect (as they do fine using the network manager connection). using 'ifstatus wlan0', seems to suggest there is no configuration file when using the 'traditional' gui. Has any one had similar problems

Ubuntu :: Add Gnome 3 Traditional Layout In 11.10
Apr 15, 2011how Ubuntu should have a version of Gnome 3 without the shell (traditional style) available for Ubuntu 11.10 since Canonical won't include Classic Desktop (Gnome 2.30.2) anymore. Linux Mint which is another alternative To Windows and Mac has decided to include a "traditional layout" of Gnome 3 (no Gnome Shell) as their default interface. Of course if users want to they can install Gnome 3 or Unity both of which have received many positive and negative comments. SO check out the link to Ubuntu brainstorm and vote on the idea.

Dec 13, 2010The top right menu icons turn into a real mess. I can still click on them, it's just they aren't displaying properly. Sometimes certain icons disappear completely. Nov 14, 2010I have problem regarding when a application is started from the menu-line. If I for example start wxmaxima though Menu -> Science -> Wxmaxima, then the menu-bar is gone. I can access the menu-bar by pressing F10, but the menubar never shows up!
I have the same experience with emacs 23, where the menu-bar starts as it should, but whenever I change major (or minor) mode, the new menu-item appears, but I cannot access the menu-item (it is just blank). As before, whenever I go though F10 the menuitem shows up as it should.
Same goes for eclipse.
Instead of starting the applications though the Menu -> ..., I tried to start them in the terminal instead. Then the applications do not suffer from this menubar behaviour.
Ubuntu :: Menu Accessibility - Alt Key Mnemonics Broken In Natty
May 2, 2011I upgraded to natty. I'm also used to using alt-f and so on to access menus using the keyboard. I verified this works by default. However, I always customize my desktop with an xmodmap file because i like the ctrl key to map to my thumb. This means I swap alt, control, and super keys as follows:
Setup keys so that control is nearest thumb, then moving left: alt, and finally super
remove mod1 = Alt_L
remove mod4 = Super_L
remove control = Control_L
keysym Alt_L = Control_L
keysym Super_L = Alt_L
keysym Control_L = Super_L
add mod1 = Alt_L
add mod4 = Super_L
add control = Control_L
When I do this, alt key mnemonics no longer works. Alt+f no longer gives me access to the file menu. Any ideas for mapping meta keys perhaps in another manner that doesn't conflict with natty?

Aug 31, 2009In the ubuntu series I find my hard disk description as this: /dev/sda. As we know in slackware (10.1) for partitioning we either use 'fdisk' or 'cfdisk' when I use fdisk, like mentioned: fdisk /dev/sda. It says disk cannot be found.... or something like that. I think I know why?
You see my hard disk has the D: E: F: as extended partitions comprising logical drives and only my C: drive is pure primary. Does this have any connection with my problem? As from my explanation you can find that I'm a total wreck with computers.. but I'm very thrilled to learn linux. The reason why I need slax is that I require a traditional root account.

These worked fine in Karmic, but now when I select them, playback freezes on any menu, and I have to kill the front end process. Mythtv is set to use the internal player, but I have the same issue with VLC.

I was working with TeamViewer 5 just fine and then saw that TeamViewer 6 was available. I performed a complete removal of TeamViewer 5 via the Synaptic Package Manager and then did a clean install of TeamViewer 6 by executing the new deb file.
TeamViewer 6 was added to the Main Menu just fine, but after rebooting my laptop, the TeamViewer 6 Main Menu launcher was gone and a broken link was there in its place.
I have since followed the solution in the below thread to get a valid TeamViewer 6 launcher back in the Main Menu, but I cannot get rid of the broken link.

In the System->Preferences->Main Menu window, the broken link is basically frozen. I can't hide it or delete it. Is there some file I'm just going to have to update to get rid of it?
Ubuntu :: Places Pull Down Menu / Buttons In File Management Windows Broken By Ktorrent
Mar 12, 2011Whenever i click on an icon in the Places pull down menu (except Computer, Network, Connect To Server and Search For Files) nothing happens except I get Ktorrent popping up and claiming it cant open the selected Drive or Folder because it is not a valid torrent file. Which is fair enough, 'cos its not a torrent. Its the entry for my Desktop in a pull down menu in my O/S, and it does this even when I haven't been near Ktorrent in the previous hundred clicks of the mouse, or if Ktorrent is not running. If i un-install Ktorrent, the error message changed, but the correct windows did not open when asked from the Places pull down, and the error returns when its re installed- well, tried it once, in a very basic fashion through the software center.
I think the problem has been caused by two containing folders of torrent data files that have become stuck as entrys in the Pllaces menu- cack handed off me folks, was playing with new mouse settings as I was playing with new mouse settings. Problem may also be something to do with the problems I have been having with Ktorrent- it refuses to accept torrent files unless through a magnet link, bringing up the same "parse error- not valid torrent file" error message as comes up from the Places menu, only of course citing the torrent i just tried, when I know for sure the file is valid and operational because Transmission has no problem with it.I really hope someone can help me fix this, as formatting and re-installing will be a real ball ache, as I'm a new user who's spent the last week learning and starting the customization process, and I was just getting to think about backing it all up.System is Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, Pentium quad core, one 250Gb system drive and another larger drive called storage that appears under Media path both SATA2, no DVD drive as connector is in the post.

I don't see anything relevant in /var/log/messages. I've tried rebooting and restarting the SSHD service.

OpenSUSE :: Yelp 2.28 Broken By Xulrunner1.9.2
Sep 8, 2010Since upgrading to opensuse 11.2 in May, I've not been able to install any programs that require xulrunner1.9.2, specifically firefox 3.6, without breaking yelp.
When I try to start yelp I get the error,
Unable to load page The requested URI "file:///fakefile#index" is invalid
If I try to view the help of any program that uses yelp it just hangs.
Up until now I've just run firefox 3.5, but since 3.6 is now a recommended update I have updated and once again yelp is broken.
I've tried every suggestion I could find on google, like reinstalling stuff, but the only fix so far is to remove xulrunner1.9.2 and downgrade or remove everything that depends on it. I also tried upgrading yelp to 2.30 but it just flicks open for a split second and closes.

Dec 4, 2010On my opensuse 11.2 pc, the Decmber 3rd KDE 4.5.4 update proceeded to install all updates except libkdecore4 (and maybe others). libkdecore4 now has a dependency on liblzma5 which is not available. The result is an all white desktop with boxes where the widgets should be.

OpenSUSE :: Nautilus Trash Is Broken
Dec 16, 2010openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. Every time I try to open up the trash, it gives me an "operation not supported" error, and starting nautilus from the terminal doesn't give me any output. I've tried removing the ~/.local/share/Trash and ~/.nautilus folders for both my main user and root and restarting nautilus, all to no avail.
Also, nothing in nautilus that starts with protocol:// works, like network or burn (or trash).
My only lead so far is that I messed up something in the glib runtime, since I've been working on a project that depends on a lot of GNOME and glib libraries, and have compiled a few from source. But since I can't find any sort of log from nautilus, I have no idea what the cause actually is.
OpenSUSE :: Javascript Broken In Chromium?
Jan 9, 2011i think something has broken javascript in my chromium installation. I've tried updating chromium and reinstalling/updating my java installation. Neither of these has helped. To give you an idea of the behavior I'm seeing this page does not have buttons, but pictures of all the buttons. Clicking them does nothing. Also, gmail's regular interface will not load. Functionality seems entirely normal (so far) in firefox.
