OpenSUSE Wireless :: Traditional (ifup) And Networkmanager Using KDE 11.4

Mar 13, 2011

I have just installed 11.4 KDE (having used 11.3 for a while). I was able to use YAST in 11.3 to switch from network manager, to using 'traditional', to connect to wireless network without problems. Since installing (fresh install) 11.4, only network manager seems to work without issue;

using traditional never sets up the wireless connection - or should i say appears not to as no apps will connect (as they do fine using the network manager connection). using 'ifstatus wlan0', seems to suggest there is no configuration file when using the 'traditional' gui. Has any one had similar problems

Programming :: Pencil Sketch With Imagemagic Using Bash Script?

Jul 13, 2011

I may be using the wrong words to search but I'm not finding what I want.I would like to take a 10 sec video, 300 frames, convert it to individual frames convert them to line drawings and then reassemble them into an animated GIF. Both 'gimp' and 'mplayer' will do to make the frames. Is there already in existence a script file using imagemagic that will convert the pictures to line drawings without color? Or maybe several scripts that can be put into a step through 'bash' script.

Ubuntu :: Top Panel Not Drawn Correctly?

Dec 7, 2010

Sometimes (almost always) when I log in to Ubuntu, the top panel is not 'drawn' perfectly. The left has always been fine (menus, shortcuts). But the right has issues. Most often the icons for wireless or custom applications are half there or sometimes only a white vertical line is there instead. Sometimes the profile name is half visible twice (meaning the first part of my name is drawn next to itself. right click the panel, choose 'properties' and check 'show hide buttons'. I can then immediately uncheck it and everything is drawn correctly.

Ubuntu :: Add Gnome 3 Traditional Layout In 11.10

Apr 15, 2011

how Ubuntu should have a version of Gnome 3 without the shell (traditional style) available for Ubuntu 11.10 since Canonical won't include Classic Desktop (Gnome 2.30.2) anymore. Linux Mint which is another alternative To Windows and Mac has decided to include a "traditional layout" of Gnome 3 (no Gnome Shell) as their default interface. Of course if users want to they can install Gnome 3 or Unity both of which have received many positive and negative comments. SO check out the link to Ubuntu brainstorm and vote on the idea.

Software :: Line-drawing Characters Not Longer Drawn In Console After Kernel Upgrade?

Jun 24, 2009

I upgraded in Ubuntu from 2.6.28-13 to 2.6.30 and now I get no line-drawing characters in applications like alsamixer; instead they are replaced by 127-bit chars like 'lqqk'. As a coder, I'd really like to understand what happened - what changed (file in /etc?) affecting terminal capabilities, and what does the kernel have to do with it .

PS: the distro is Jaunty and I used the debs at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-mainline/:

General :: Partitioning For Slackware 10.1 - Require Traditional Root Account

Aug 31, 2009

In the ubuntu series I find my hard disk description as this: /dev/sda. As we know in slackware (10.1) for partitioning we either use 'fdisk' or 'cfdisk' when I use fdisk, like mentioned: fdisk /dev/sda. It says disk cannot be found.... or something like that. I think I know why?

You see my hard disk has the D: E: F: as extended partitions comprising logical drives and only my C: drive is pure primary. Does this have any connection with my problem? As from my explanation you can find that I'm a total wreck with computers.. but I'm very thrilled to learn linux. The reason why I need slax is that I require a traditional root account.

Ubuntu :: Editing Partitions By Hand?

Apr 26, 2010

I am looking to set up a separate /home partition and am getting somewhat confused. On an old system I practised resizing the partitions and feel reasonably confident in the mechanics.

Currently my drive is /dev/sda1 an ext4 file system with a mount point of / ;
/dev/sda2 and extended partition and /dev/sda5 a linux swap.

I propose to reduce the sda1 to about 10GiB for Karmic and allocate the bulk of the remainder to /home. It is this point that I start to have difficulty. I have seen screen shots which show a mount point of /home and for the life of me I have been unable so far to see how this is created. This has been further confused when looking at the subject in my latest copy of Linux Format (132) where it shows an example where dev/sda1 if NTFS, sda2 as ext3 and a mount point of /home, sda3 as ext4 and mount point of / finally sda4 being a Linux swap.

I wish at the end of the day to have Karmic as my OS with a separate /home partition with the view that once Lucid has settled down that I adopt it.

What I would like to know is how having reduced sda1 do I proceed. As sda1 is an ext4 file system should the /home be also ext4 or like the example in the magazine of ext3? How is the mount point for /home named? Finally should I attempt to have /dev/sda number sequentially or let things stick as at present I imagine that if I delete the current extended and swap before reducing the /dev/sda1 then that should get things to run in sequence.

I intend to use a live DVD to let me work with the partitions as this should be safer than messing about with my current partitions when mounted.

Fedora :: Using RPM Nvidia Drivers Or Building Them By Hand?

Aug 6, 2009

For a new project at work, I'm looking into building a processing farm of a few dozen Tesla 1U servers from Nvidia. This has lead us on to figure a way to let the developers run tests on their own workstations (with the appropriate gfx card). The cards we're looking at are Quadro FX 1800 or 3800's to provide quite a bit of poke.

Thing is, I'm having issues with running any Cuda code successfully on systems installed with the pre-built nvidia drivers from RPMFusion. I can only get code running if I download the nvidia or cuda drivers from nvidia and install by hand. Not something I'd like to be maintaining across all out developer workstations. Is anyone out there running Cuda on Fedora/RHEL5 platform? If so, are you using RPM nvidia drivers or building them by hand?

Ubuntu :: Firefox 3.5.8 Hiding Right Hand Text

Apr 8, 2010

In viewing some web pages, the right hand dozen or so characters are hidden unless the left-right scroll bar is used. When Firefox 3.5.8 32 bit is expanded to full screen on a 1920 pixel wide monitor on Kubuntu 9.10, Firefox changes the word wrap so the new dozen or so characters are STILL hidden, forcing me to use the left-right scrool bar.

There no longer appears to be any Word Wrap option. I tried several solutions Googled, including userContent.css hacks and a couple of add-ins, but they all appear to apply only to the preformatted tag. This is not a "pre" issue. The text in question is not inside the preformatted text tag, and the site CSS is not under my control.

Fedora :: No Fading Animation In Gnome3, F15?

Jul 25, 2011

I've recently decided to switch from KDE 4.6 to Gnome 3. I've always been a KDE user, since version 2, really. But I happen to really like the new look of Gnome. To me it looks more professional somehow. Very little in terms of distractions. On both my laptop and my desktop, I have installed the Gnome 3 packages through Packagekit and on both machines it runs nice and smooth. There is one difference, though. On the desktop machine, when I lock the screen, it goes to black instantly. On the laptop, it fades to black. I really like the look of the fading animation and I'd like the desktop machine to do the same, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it.

The difference between both machines is that the laptop has an Intel graphics card whereas the desktop machine has an Nvidia 6800 GT, with the proprietary driver running. I followed Leigh's excellent guide to install that driver and it works like a charm. I do have desktop effects in KDE 4, so I know the driver is installed and running. I also am able to run hardware accelerated games in Wine without a problem.Being new to Gnome, especially Gnome 3, I have no idea where to look for these kinds of special effects. The System Settings program seems sort of Spartan and the gconf-editor doesn't show me anything that I can relate to this fading effect.
