In the Ubuntu "Places" menu my external harddrive icon always shows up with a "broken" icon or the grey screen with lower righthand corner turned. Changing the icon in Nautilus doesn't affect it.
View 6 RepliesI lost the pictures and music icons on the places menu. When I browse the folders from nautilus I see the icons, but when I click on the places menu I see the regular folder icon and not the special pictures icon or music icon
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhenever i click on an icon in the Places pull down menu (except Computer, Network, Connect To Server and Search For Files) nothing happens except I get Ktorrent popping up and claiming it cant open the selected Drive or Folder because it is not a valid torrent file. Which is fair enough, 'cos its not a torrent. Its the entry for my Desktop in a pull down menu in my O/S, and it does this even when I haven't been near Ktorrent in the previous hundred clicks of the mouse, or if Ktorrent is not running. If i un-install Ktorrent, the error message changed, but the correct windows did not open when asked from the Places pull down, and the error returns when its re installed- well, tried it once, in a very basic fashion through the software center.
I think the problem has been caused by two containing folders of torrent data files that have become stuck as entrys in the Pllaces menu- cack handed off me folks, was playing with new mouse settings as I was playing with new mouse settings. Problem may also be something to do with the problems I have been having with Ktorrent- it refuses to accept torrent files unless through a magnet link, bringing up the same "parse error- not valid torrent file" error message as comes up from the Places menu, only of course citing the torrent i just tried, when I know for sure the file is valid and operational because Transmission has no problem with it.I really hope someone can help me fix this, as formatting and re-installing will be a real ball ache, as I'm a new user who's spent the last week learning and starting the customization process, and I was just getting to think about backing it all up.System is Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, Pentium quad core, one 250Gb system drive and another larger drive called storage that appears under Media path both SATA2, no DVD drive as connector is in the post.
I'm trying to change the icon on my custom main menu on Ubuntu 10.10 doing this> sudo gconf-editor apps/panel/default_setup/objects/menu_bar.I gave object_type menu-object and custom_icon path as /home/ john/Pictures/menu.png then I checked use_custom_icon but with no luck (notice that I've succeed doing this in a virtual machine with the exact settings)Also I want to have icons on places and system, so I did thisdesktop/gnome/interface and clicked menus_have_icons.what I'm missing?

It won't load as it is NTFS. Am I okay to reformat it using GParted? I'm unable to get the drive up in a window, but GParted can see it.
I've a new USB 3.0 Hub card and plugged it into pcie1x. The chipset on this controller is a NEC uPD720200. I attached a HD to it but it wasn't recognized (but Windows does!).
I'm runnig archlinux (all updates) which shows the card/harddrive as (lsusb) Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub fdisk doesn't show the device.
How to access the HD?
I installed Ubuntu on a portable harddrive so that I can use it independently of my computer (when I visit my parents or my g/f). I performed the installation using a bootable Ubuntu thumbdrive, everything went fine but when I unplugged the thumbdrive and rebooted I got a kernel panic. I was able to boot into Ubuntu on my external drive once (I think it might have been due to reordering boot order in BIOS). My guess is that the kernel panic occurs due to the drive letter changing (sdb -> sdc) depending on which external devices are plugged in, but I'm not sure how to make sure that's the case. And if it is, how would I prevent this from happening?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a folder in my Home folder and called "Projects". I want to change the icon of the folder Project so the icon changed in everywhere. In "Places", Open Dialogs, Save Dialogs and Normal View in Nautilus.
What I have done:
Change the icon using Right-Click -> Properties -> Basic Tab -> Clicked the current icon and changed it.
But this changed it only in Nautilus. If I added this folder to "Places" it will appear with the Default icon. The same thing if I browsed to it using Open Dialogs or Save Dialogs.
I want to access files on my external harddrive through GNOME, beyond plugging it into my computer via USB I have no idea what to do next..I think it has something to do with a mount point or the 'mount' command...to summarise, my question is how can I access extern. HardD through GNOME?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi have an external harddrive which i encrypted scince opensuse 10.2 with luks. Now i installed opensuse 11.2 its impossible to me to mount this drive correctly.
the harddrive was recocnized in my former opensuse 11.0 correctly as luks encrypted and during installation yast installed the kernel module and encrypted the harddrive so that i regulay could mount it on boot by giving the password for that harddrive. Scince opensuse 11.2 however yast thinks this is an dmcrypted partitoon and tries to unlock the harddrive using dmcrypt which of course fails.
does somebody know how i can encrypt and mount the externeal drive automaticly?
i have made a backup of /etc before i made a new installation of opensuse 11.2. is the possible to use the old fstab entries for that after installing luks?
is there a way to add places to the application menu(to get something closer to gnome "main menu" that has applications, system and places in one drop down)
View 4 Replies View RelatedFirst of all I have to say I love Fedora, just switched from openSuSE after the system was kinda sluggish the last 2 or 3 versions. But one thing I always liked was the fact that when the system went into suspend my external harddrive spun down and after resuming it spun up again as soon as I tried to access a file. Now in Fedora the harddrive continues spinning and is unavailable after resuming. There is nothing about the harddrive in dmesg, not during suspending and not even when i unplug it after resuming.

I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).
I just found some cool icons and I want to try them to see if they match my theme but I do not know how to change the Icon.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.
