My ASUS Eee PC 701's keyboard has some broken keys: 1,3,5,7,8,0,=,bkspc and tab do not function at all.Whilst I can just about make do as is, it would be nice to be able to press Ctrl+AltGr+'Q-P' for numbers or something.

F5 > R
F6 > F
F7 > v
I would like to be able to keep the configuration - how would i go about doing this? BTW, graphical interface would be nice.
How can I set keys to be remapped for one specific program in Linux? (More specifically Caps Lock -> Escape for gVim. I hit it accidentally too much to remap it in everything).

I hate to replace a keyboard cause of that, so is there any way to remap the space-bar to another key? I've looked at all of the options & can't find anything. View 6 Replies View RelatedSo, for some reason the right side ENTER, period, semi colon, SHIFT, and UP, Down, Left arrow keys have all stopped working on my laptop. I just set up a dual boot with windows xp, and ubuntu.
I checked under the keys, and cleaned them, and no problem. This wouldn't be that bad of a sutuation, I could just re-map the keys. However, when my computer starts, and I enter Bios > Bootloader, I get stuck.
I can use home/end to move up and down, but no way to select which OS I want. I have to plug in a USB keyboard to get into my OS. I don't want to be carrying around a keyboard, otherwise I wouldn't have a laptop.
So, I either need a different bootloader which can use some other keys, or I need a way to remap the enter key all the way back at the bios, so I can trick it and enter my OS,
Edit: Actually, I'll probably need a new keyboard. Ubuntu is pretty good with battery life, so I could boot into ubuntu, then hibernate. So, I need a good key mapper for Ubuntu
I have an Apple Aluminium keyboard. To the left of 1 key I have the less/greater (< >) key, not grave/tilde (` ~). xmodmap does not work for me: layout switching (done with setxkbmap) resets my xmodmap changes. .Xmodmap file does not help either. How do I remap the tilde key?

This is the key which will delete or in numpad mode will put a '.' or a ',' in my case.I want the ',' to be a '.' .So I found out that xev gives me some information about the keys.So I tried something likexmodmap -e 'keycode 91 = period'Which is not what I want. Because than the delete command gets overwritten instead of the comma. So I triedxmodmap -e 'keysym 0x0 = period'Which looked like a endless loop to me. 0x0 is also quite strange, isn't it? I noticed that the tilde (usually accessible via [AltGr]+[+]) doesn't work any more. What it shows instead is the "bracketright". Even worse, almost every AltGr combination seems to have changed -- the brackets enclosing AltGr and + in the former sentence were achieved by "AltGR"+"�" (left) and "AltGr"+"+" (right). Here's what gnome-keyboard-properties looks like, when I select any German keyboard layout -- minus "insert", "delete", ... and the num block:
Not only has the tilde disappeared from its regular position, it can't be found anywhere on the keyboard. This holds true from the login screen to the regular workspace. Switching to tty1..6 or booting up a VM, everything works fine. I didn't touch anything which affects the keyboard layout -- or is dpgk-reconfigure fontconfig doing something like this? ^^
My aging laptop has a key broken - the D key. To replace the keyboard is too expensive, not worth spending �100 on old hardware. I sometimes use an external USB keyboard just to type D but being laptop is not always convenient. My question is how to bind key letter D to something else, be it a key combo or one of the unused/unneeded keys?On this italian laptop keyboard there are some keys i never use like Mac style right click menu button next to AltGr or home/end keys i could spare for this.

* Gnome keyboard interface appears to do nothing when options are changed, works in fc10.
* Trying to changed the keyboard options originally crashed the nx connection, untill I murdered bug buddy who was the culprit in that issue.
In fc10 you could change options and see a result, not so in fc11, why ?

View 2 Replies View Relatedpreviosuly installed products that mapped keys, but I dont have and have never had any of them. reset the keyboard to default settings, which I happily did to no avail.
So for me, since I upgraded, keyboard input (either local or via VNC, so it isnt hardware) does nothing for either the caps lock key or the shift key. Kinda makes it imnpossible to eneter @ or any uppercase character, for example !
I've got a F10 machine set up as a media center (with mythtv...mythdora to be precise) and I love that it's based on fedora since I'm most familiar with it..I would like to map the power button press to a command "pkill X" since sometimes the frontend freezes and running this command kills X (I'm running ratpoison for the speed and simplicity...it just gets the job done and doesn't get in the way).Any help in mapping a single button press to "pkill X" would be greatly appreciated. I also need some help adding this command to the sudo list so the regular "mythtv" user will be able to run it...no password can be entered since the machine has no keyboard. Currently I log in via ssh to get this done but it would be nice to not have to boot up a laptop just to do this.

My keyboard's "a" key is faulty, it's acting like it's stuck, that is it is constantly typing aaaas so I had to disable it and reassign the letter "a" to another key. I did this quite easily in Windows with a program called KeyTweak...
Now that I started working in Ubuntu, the damn thing started acting just as it did under windows and it's constantly typing a all over the place, so I can't get any work done. How do I disable the key "a" and reassign "a" to another key(like q for instance)? Are there any programs for key remapping in Ubuntu or I'll have to do it manually? If so, how?
I play World Of Warcraft and in Windows I used a program that allowed me to map my 2 side buttons to one being CTRL and the other ALT to make for much easier keybindings. Does anyone know how I can do this with ubuntu?

Its great, but I'm looking for a way to remap the commands to use the Windows key instead of the Alt key. I've found lots of references that show how to remap using the .gntrc file, but none that mention the windows key. This says I can rebind: [URL] And the examples on all the pages I could google are setup to use Alt (a) or Ctrl (c), but not the windows key. Examples I've found follow this format. Simple enough, but what to use for the Win key?

View 6 Replies View Relatedwondering if any other ppc users have had the issue whereby, after the first unsuccessful power down (or sometimes the second or third) of a fresh ubuntu 9.10 install, mouse button 3, which is normally mapped to F12, becomes function (fn) + F12.? This is really annoying as you now have to use two hands to activate the little drop down menu. So i tried remapping mouse button three to that strange little key beside the left arrow on an ibook keyboard that looks like a picnic table and which, under os x, renames stuff.
I ran "gksu gedit /etc/sysctl.d/10-arch-specific.conf" and edited it accordingly: mouse button 3 from keycode 88 to 104. It works, but i still have to press function to activate it and fn + F12 still works simultaneously (though it is no longer defined in the conf file), and my new key doesnt offer the same functionality (eg, it doesnt give spell check options in firefox where fn + F12 does). Arg. Anybody know how to make it so that i can activate mouse button three without having to press function?
I've been playing a fair amount of Minecraft. Awesome game, but I really dislike that the mouse buttons bindings aren't editable. I was wondering if there was a program out there for Linux that can remap a mouse button (Like [Right Click]) to a key on your keyboard. (Like the [Spacebar]) I've done some digging around, but nothing shows up to edit the three standard mouse buttons, just the extended ones.

I'm currently using Fedora 12 as seen in the subject, and I'm fairly new to it, but recently I've had a problem with my HDD. In Fedora 10 they decided to change to "evdev", so if you used xmodmap in F9, these mapping have changed in F10 and F11 for that matter. In order to find the new key values start

xev and press a button you would like to know the keycode for. Write this value down. When done, make a file ".xmodmap" and put in the values. "man xmodmap" explains the format. Not easy to understand! So here is how mine looks like.

This layout is MUCH more logical than the original. Now Delete is the key just to the right of the Backspace key. Back spaces deletes to the left, and Delete deletes to the right, so these keys shoudl of course be next to each other Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End now have the same structure as the arrow keys below. This layout makes it much easier to navigate without looking at the keys, because now the layout makes sense And why shouldn't 0 be to the left of 1? of course it should. 0 is lower than 1.
I have a new install and my right touch pad button doesn't paste like on my other installs. Instead I have to use shift-insert. Does anyone know the keysym statement that can remap shift insert to my right touchpad button(laptop)?
