Apr 25, 2010I want to setup a Linux Fedora based Anti-Virus & Anti-Spam Server on my LAN. I have more than 60 Windows users with Proxy Squid running on LAN. Our Email server is hosted on the Internet. Because of virus/spam generate problem, emails are worst affected & the users have a lot of problem on Email, as the outlook gives error. It happens when a PC generates Spam & our IP gets blocked by the ISP for some time. Thats why I want to setup an Anti VIRUS/SPAM Firewall on my LAN (before the Squid), so these spams do not go past the Internet Gateway.Hope u guys understand my problem & suggest some useful links, software & documentations.

And same with firewall like ZoneAlarm and Comodo ?
Some people say you do not need a anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky or any firewall.Other people say you do and some say that Unix and Mac OSX have built in firewall.
And if on uses windows use ZoneAlarm or Comodo has it does alot more than windows firewall and router firewall. Note the admin saying the other thread was why windows get more malware and not very much the subject of the thread to post there.

Jan 13, 2010My Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer?
2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?

Aug 22, 2010I am running Windows XP in VirtualBox. I generally only use it for iTunes and some light browsing occassionally. Downloads only occur on iTunes, but it does have internet access. And my wife will still only use Windows, so if she uses this particular machine it is available to her, and she occassionally goes to facebook on this machine.
Should I install an anti-virus? Is it really necessary? I am pretty certain my Linux install would be unaffected even if a virus or other malware did occur in VirtualBox.

Mar 31, 2011I am trying to connect an ipad to a windows xp virtual machine running in a linux (opensuse) host machine. VMWare reports that usbmuxd running on the host machine (opensuse) must first release the usb port so that vmware can open it in the guest (XP) vm. VMWare knows that I have physically connected an ipad and when I click "Connect" reports the error and then displays the port as "Connected" although according to ITunes diagnostics there is no such connection. I have the same problem connecting a usb flash drive to the guest vm. Is there a way I can manually disconnect the port from the opensuse host?

Mar 4, 2010OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.
1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2
2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)
3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...
4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel
5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.
6 - Open a root terminal and run
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare
* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *
7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.
8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)
9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.
10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

Sep 24, 2010My machine that is running Windows XP got a virus a few months ago. Keep in mind I have NEVER used Internet Explorer.
Symptoms when CONNECTED to the internet: My volume is turned down on start-up. When the volume is on the internet explorer "clicking" noise plays frequently. In task manager there are two "iexplore.exe" processes running. As soon as I kill them they will start up again. They aren't taking up copious amounts of memory, but they are still very present. If left on for long enough pop-ups will start appearing.
Symptoms when NOT CONNECTED to the internet: None.
What I've done: I've ran a handful of the free Anti-Virus programs, e.g., AVG, ComboFix, avast!, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
