OpenSUSE :: Run In Terminal Option On A Desktop File?
Jun 28, 2011
Haven't found any references to this, just wondering where the "Run in Terminal" option has gone when creating a link to an application on the Desktop in 11.4/KDE4.6. Can do it manually by editing the .desktop file, but there is no option in the Link setup..?
I have an openSUSE 11.3 system happily running KDE 4.4.4, and want to add Gnome desktop as an option. I go into YAST->S/W Mgmt->Patterns and click on 'Gnome Desktop Environment' and get this warning - "pattern:gnome-11.3-22.1.x86_64 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided" (screenshot here). It looks like the conflict is with patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure, which lists the Gnome RPM and pulseaudio as conflicts.
Questions: Is this only for bookkeeping purposes, or is there really a conflict having both desktops on one system? Will I have conflicts with pulseaudio? (I know I can disable it) If I want to go ahead, should I just select deinstallation of the ..._pure RPM?
when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.
i have script it is for installing a program when I run it on terminal an old type GUI with a scroll bar and options appears. I can go from option to option but the first one is default selected and I can not select any other one it is something like that:[*] option 1
[] option 2 [] option 3
I can go over option 2,3,.. but the first one is default selected [*] with the asterisk. How can I move asterisk to any other option? when i go over another option and hit enter it is executing the default one.
I've recently installed matlab and after some poking around found that you must start it using a script like:
#>> cd ~root/../matlab2009/bin/ #>>./matlab
the manual tells me that the installation should have made it so that all you have to do is type matlab at the terminal but for some reason this hasn't happened. If you did not set up symbolic links in the installation procedure, you must enter the full path name to start MATLAB, matlabroot/bin/matlab, where matlabroot is the name of the folder in which you installed MATLAB. I've also looked at documentation on ln but most refers to making links between files. Is there a way to link the command "matlab" to the file shown above so all I have to do is type the command and it runs the script?
Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable... I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.
After updating/upgrading my packages this morning, the terminal profile preferences screen (Edit > Profile Preferences) no longer had the option at the bottom for setting the default terminal size. This is a problem because the default size went from the 132x43 I had set it to down to 80x24. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on three machines and had this problem on all of them. After noticing the problem on the first machine, I checked the option screens of the other machines before upgrading. The default size option was there before the upgrades, but after upgrading, it was gone.
Here is the aptitude log from the upgrade: [UPGRADE] ant 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1 [UPGRADE] ant-gcj 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1 [UPGRADE] ant-optional 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1 [UPGRADE] ant-optional-gcj 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1 [UPGRADE] gnome-terminal 2.29.6-0ubuntu5 -> 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 [UPGRADE] gnome-terminal-data 2.29.6-0ubuntu5 -> 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 [UPGRADE] google-chrome-stable 6.0.472.62-r59676 -> 6.0.472.63-r59945 [UPGRADE] libphonon4 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu5 -> 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu5.1 .....
It's almost surely gnome-terminal or gnome-terminal-data, but I included the full list just in case. What are my options for fixing this? Should I try rolling back the upgrade? Should I not bother with that and just try setting the default terminal size through other means?
I would like a program that records my desktop activity as a video file. Do you know any nice program to do that? Moreover it would be nice afterward to insert this video the openoffice or microsoft's powerpoint. Do you know what is the "best" video format that guarantees the biggest interoperability (the ability the video to play in different platforms).
Does OpenSuSE have any base64 file converters? I've just heard that Ubuntu has one built in. I'm asking because I have some old archived emails (from Mozilla Mail) and some of the emails have attachments. I've been told a way to convert the jpg and gif images but I also need some pdf's and doc's and ms excel documents to convert too. I run SuSE 11.2 and I use KDE as my desktop environment.
I created a link on my Desktop to point to the Netbeans IDE. However, it's giving me the default icon. I want to change the icon. I figure I can do this in the Desktop Configuation file. But I'm not sure what location the configuration file is looking for icons?SUSE 11.3KDE 4.4.4
Has anyone else experienced issues with this option? Using the tweak tool from Malcolm's repo. If I set it, it works in the current session. But after logout, I can't login again. At login the desktop appears briefly then closes back to the login screen.
Will the alternate installer cd for 10.04.1 have the option to install gnome desktop like the normal install cd? Also, if I install from the alternate installer cd, and use remastersys to backup my system afterward, will that use the default text based install that the alternate installer cd did?
If I am using LXDE or another non-Gnome desktop and want to use Nautilus as the file viewer it needs to be launched with the --no-desktop option (so nautilus does not load it's desktop image under the other DE).
I know there is a way to make it so whenever nautilus is launched it will not load the desktop (even if you do not pass the --no-desktop argument) but I do not recall how I did this last time! I believe it was a gconf value. Anyone know what this setting is/how I can accomplish what I am looking to do?
I've downloaded a linux driver for my wireless card (Realtek 8191SE), and whenever I try to make it it gives me the following error:make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [all] Error 2I have installed make, pattern devel_basis devel_C_C++, kernel-source, linux-kernel-headers, gcc43, etc.I also tried linking them:# ln -s /usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop/buildln: creating symbolic link `./build': File existslinux-ynct:/lib/modules # ls2.6.31.14-0.1-debug 2.6.31.14-0.1-desktop 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop2.6.31.14-0.1-default 2.6.31.14-0.1-xen
I am trying to install an application. But when I do a make it gives me this error . I tried to resolve it by installing kernel-sorce, kernel-devel packages But still cant seem to get rid of the error.
I'm now using RHEL5 and I've noticed that when right-clicking in the desktop, the option at the top of the menu list is Create Folder. Is there any way I can change this option to Open Terminal
I'm unable to reset using either the reset option in gnome shell or the command using a terminal. When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware
I have a bash script that launches an application of mine through a gnome terminal with the following command:gnome-terminal -x MyApplicationIf MyApplication launches correctly, a GUI is displayed. If it fails to launch correctly, it reports errors to stdout (the terminal). My problem is, the terminal immediately exits when MyApplication exits, leaving no time to see the error messages if MyApplication fails to launch. You can also see this behavior by trying:gnome-terminal -x lsThe gnome terminal immediately exits. Is there a way to stop this behavior? I want the terminal to remain until I close it.
I am loading a terminal from the command line using the command gnome-terminal and there are two things I want to do:-(1) Specify location and size(2) Enable "Always on Top"I know how to do (1) with the --geometry option. But I cannot find a way to accomplish (2). Can someone please tell me how I can do this?
1. Is it possible to instead of using the Desktop Folder plasmoid, have a usual Desktop act as a file manager? 2. What is Akondi? There are tons of processes which have Akonadi in their name, and it seems to be using up lots of memory. Can I disable these somehow, or is it safe to do so? 3. Any general tips on how to reduce the amount ram that is used on startup? I am using somewhere around 750MB on startup, which is about double the amount Gnome uses. After a few hours of use, Xorg uses close to 1GB of memory. 4. Whenever I get a notification, they don't delete themselves, so when I click on the (i), I see tons of notifications. Is there a way to get them to delete themselves after they have been shown?
there is any way (via terminal or gediting a file) to use .flac files instead of .ogg in a sound theme file? I am creating a sound theme (several truthfully) and I would like to use the FLAC format if possible.
right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option
1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox 2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it 3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox
I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me
wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S
I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.
I have a script where I want to redirect stdout to the terminal and also to a log file aswell as redirecting stderr to the same log file but not the terminal.I have the following code which I found on the net which redirects both stderr and stdout to a file and the logfile,
I would like to set a permanent, transparentmmovable terminal over my desktop background. I've tried various out-of-date guides to doing this, but all of them left me with a border around my window (I think Emerald caused this)letely mobile terminals. It is as if my terminal background has just been turned completely transparent. I would like to have it so that it looks like the one in this video:HTML Code:
