OpenSUSE Install :: Add Gnome Desktop As An Option - Conflict
Nov 5, 2010
I have an openSUSE 11.3 system happily running KDE 4.4.4, and want to add Gnome desktop as an option. I go into YAST->S/W Mgmt->Patterns and click on 'Gnome Desktop Environment' and get this warning - "pattern:gnome-11.3-22.1.x86_64 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided" (screenshot here). It looks like the conflict is with patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure, which lists the Gnome RPM and pulseaudio as conflicts.
Questions: Is this only for bookkeeping purposes, or is there really a conflict having both desktops on one system? Will I have conflicts with pulseaudio? (I know I can disable it) If I want to go ahead, should I just select deinstallation of the ..._pure RPM?

I installed Opensuse 11.2 DVD on a machine with Windows XP. During the installation I installed the KDE desktop. I had not tried out the KDE desktop. I had a Live CD with the Gnome desktop that i had tried out and liked. I think I like the Gnome desktop better. Now I would like to run both desktops. After going to the install new software and changing the view to patterns and select the "Gnome Desktop Environment" I get this error.
#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2010-03-18 09:47:52 ####
pattern:gnome-11.2-20.22.1.i586 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.2-20.22.1.i586[11.2 - Main Repository (OSS)]

I was able to install the Gnome Base system with no problems or conflicts.

I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

Im trying to install GNOME-3 on top of kde and have GNOME DE option show up in kdm. I have SUSE DVD and have set local(OD) repository priority to 80 in order to get most packages from DVD. Inspite of that YaST pulls packages from online repositories, it may be the latest version. I have 8 MbPS dsl but the YaST download speeds are around 500B. How do I change mirrors of repositories. In my opinion this has nothing to do with ipv6, I use ipv6 for openBSD and it get good browsing speeds. Im trying to set kdm4 login manager but it doesnt start after enabling for YaST-/etc/sysconfig.

Will the alternate installer cd for 10.04.1 have the option to install gnome desktop like the normal install cd? Also, if I install from the alternate installer cd, and use remastersys to backup my system afterward, will that use the default text based install that the alternate installer cd did?

I am trying to install openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop from the DVD in February's Linux Magazine which I hope guarantees a good disk. However both the live DVD and a trial full installation load to a green screen without taskbar or icons meaning I cannot run any applications or even close down. The live KDE version runs OK but I wanted Gnome because I have had problems backing up Kmail in the past. I have run version 10.3 with Gnome successfully on this computer previously.

I am trying to get OpenSUSE 11.2 working. Everytime I install it, it installs with errors but when the user I setup auto logs in to the GNOME desktop, the desktop never loads. I can get into failsafe mode sometimes. I've replaced the harddrive and installed it again = same issue. I've redownloaded and burned a different DVD, verifying the checksum, and running the "check media" option = same issue. I've done a repair install = same issue. I've removed the added Ethernet and modem cards and reinstalled = same issue. I've deleted all partitions from previous install and reinstalled = same issue. Currently, I just defraged the HDD on a windows machine and am running the install once more (one a completely different machine) but what's going on here? I need 11.2 for Clonezilla SE (not 11.3)

I`m running openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE 4.7.0 and i want to install Gnome3 as a second desktop option at login menu, for me to explore and learn. I know the Gnome 3 repo is this Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE: 3.0/openSUSE_11.4 and the app`s repo exists as well Index of /repositories/GNOME: Apps/openSUSE_11.4+GNOME_STABLE_3.0 I don`t use network manager for my internet connection because i own a router and i use ifup with dhcp4. To install it i just add the repo`s and run zypper dup ? or are there any other settings to adjust so i don`t end up with a broken system(regarding to the kdm service that starts KDE, i suspect that a gdm daemon will be created as well...) ?

Im trying out popular distros running on Gnome.. to see possible installation candidate And having one problem with OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome out of the box...I can not enable desktop effects.. it says it can not be done on my hardware configuration...My hardware: AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, Ati Radeon X600 256MB, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD...In every other distro I tried from live CD.. I could enable desktop effects. Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? No problems in Fedora, Ubuntu...

By trying to install opensuse 11.4 / 1 the installation hungsup at a late level. After rebooting the system, the configuration goes on. When finishing the installation on that way, there are no menus so you can to simply nothing. The problem of system hanging exists also with version 11.3 final release but after rebooting the configuration goes on and when finished, you have the menus.

I installed KDE from a CD. Then decided I wanted to have Gnome has an option. I installed "gnome-desktop" via software manager (as per some other instructions on the forum) but I still have no option to choose Gnome when logging in.
What all do I choose to get the complete Gnome environment? Or is it better (& easier?) to reinstall with a DVD?

I think I made one tweak too far and as a result have lost my desktop - no top panel, launcher just a blank screen with my desktop background. I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.

I am trying to update two 64-bit PCs from SuSE 11.1 to 11.2. Both are having the same problem: On the "Installation Settings" screen, under "Packages" is a message: "Cannot solve all conflicts. Manual intervention is required" If I click on "Packages" a dialog box opens with this message:
"problem with installed package kernel-default-base-2.6.27.29-0.1.1.x86_64". The conflict resolution is either "keep kernel-default-base-2.6.27.29-0.1.1.x86_64" or "keep kernel-default-2.6.27.29-0.2.2.x86_64"

The server is running apache2 with mod_python and there is a conflict with the versions of expat being used, this is causing segmentation faults in Apache and the python web pages do not load. The problem is detailed here:ModPython/Articles/ExpatCausingApacheCrash - Graham's Project WikiApache is using expat 2.0.1, and python is using 2.0.0.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

Where do I set the default mount options for automounted removable drives, like memory cards?Right now the cards are being mounted with shortname=lower. That option causes my (vfat) memory card's files to appear with lowercase letters, but I'm more used to have 8.3-style msdos filenames as uppercase, (unless specifically mixed case). I've tried editing the setting in gconf, as well as editing /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi, nothing works. Mount keeps using shortname=lower, regardless of what settings I put in those 2 locations.Searching the forums gave me those 2 locations above, and nothing too current.

Haven't found any references to this, just wondering where the "Run in Terminal" option has gone when creating a link to an application on the Desktop in 11.4/KDE4.6. Can do it manually by editing the .desktop file, but there is no option in the Link setup..?

Just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04. I use Gedit as my primary text editor. When I was running 9.10, I was able to map shortcuts in Gedit for code snippets and use them without any problems. Now, in 10.04, when I map shortcuts in Gedit, as expected my WIN key is recognized as SUPER (which is how it was in 9.10). But for some reason, KDE now has that key mapped as META. Which means I can set the correct shortcut in Gedit, but can't ever use it because KDE seems to think there is no SUPER key.
I've tried every conceivable option in System Settings > Regional & Language > Keyboard Layout > Advanced > Alt/Win Key Behavior. Nothing works. I've also tried various combinations of enabling/disabling keyboard layouts altogether, and switching keyboard models. No luck so far... What's so mind-boggling is that this all worked flawlessly in 9.10. I must've screwed something up recently, but I have no idea where to look...

I've updated to Maverick and I'm running Gnome Shell at login, the version from the repos.
My problem is that Tomboy in the tray does does not list the titles of my notes. There's just the yellow note icon. The rest of the text (Synchronize, Preferences, etc) all work normally.
If I log in to the normal Ubuntu desktop, there is no problem with Tomboy.

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.
