Has anyone else experienced issues with this option? Using the tweak tool from Malcolm's repo. If I set it, it works in the current session. But after logout, I can't login again. At login the desktop appears briefly then closes back to the login screen.

If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have a home network setup so that my main machine shares it's external hard-drive via NFS. This has been working perfectly for months, however I just got a new laptop, installed openSuse 11.3 x64 and set everything up. Now there is two folders on the external network mount that won't let me do anything and always just return Networking: Stale NFS File Handle. The system still works fine under my old openSUSE 11.2 x86 laptop. I have tried unmounting the drive from the laptop, restarting the NFS client, and restarting the NFS server on the main machine. None of these have made a difference.
It is only these two folders that are effected. Everything else works just fine.
1. Is it possible to instead of using the Desktop Folder plasmoid, have a usual Desktop act as a file manager?
2. What is Akondi? There are tons of processes which have Akonadi in their name, and it seems to be using up lots of memory.Can I disable these somehow, or is it safe to do so?
3. Any general tips on how to reduce the amount ram that is used on startup? I am using somewhere around 750MB on startup, which is about double the amount Gnome uses. After a few hours of use, Xorg uses close to 1GB of memory.
4. Whenever I get a notification, they don't delete themselves, so when I click on the (i), I see tons of notifications. Is there a way to get them to delete themselves after they have been shown?
I've not found how to configure more than one ip address with network manager.Nor with kde nor with plasmoid network manager.I need several virtual ip addresses for eth0 when the "default" of eth0 is connected i.e. "Connected to Auto eth0" should initialize the virtual interfaces.I have not found no even how to configure the ip address.I think this will be used from ifup config in yast or not?There I have the virtual interfaces but they are not taken from network manager.And last but no least: Is it possible that when using network manager the eth0 is enabled even no user has logged in?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?
Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties:
Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics.

I ran gconf-editor and I can see the file but no option to not display in Nautilus. Is there an easy way to not display the file on the Gnome desktop without messing up the KDE config file?

I recently decided to install xfce-desktop as a fallback alternative whenever Gnome 3 has problems. Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.

After two weeks of daily use I experienced my first one today: the cursor turned to a hand, and no amount of clicking and pressing Esc would have any effect; Windows key didn't bring Activities in focus either. If you experience these or similar symptoms you can restart the gnome-shell in order to unlock the Gnome session:
1) pass to a console (press Ctrl+Alt+F2)
2) log in
3) execute: ps -ef | grep gnome-shell in order to find the gnome-shell process id (PID); the output may look something like

Pressing Ctrl+ALt+F1 (or, if that doesn't work -- Ctrl+ALt+F7) should take you back to the Gnome session. You should see the restarted gnome-shell. (You can now return to the console, log out from the console, and return to the Gnome session).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 20TB filesystem, xfs formatted. The filesystem has been mounted with the inode64 option, and I now need to NFS export it. NFS doesn't like the inode64 option at all. The NFS clients cannot access any of the directories with inode numbers exceeding the 32bit limit. They get the "Stale NFS file handle" message. I have tried to attach the filesystem to a RHEL5.3 system, and after turning on the no_subtree_check option in /etc/exports on the server, it all works fine. No changes were needed on the clients.
The problem is that I need to get this to work on a RHEL4.4 system. Unfortunately I cannot do any test on that system yet, I then did a quick test on a RHEL4.3 system... and it didn't work. Even using the no_subtree_check option was on any help. I am afraid that this will not work on the RHEL4.4 system either. How to get the inode64 xfs filesystem NFS exported on a 2.6.9 kernel?
I have an Atheros ar5007eg wireless card, and I haven't had problems with this card in GNOME. However, when I made the switch to KDE recently, I can't connect to any wireless networks. A wired connection works fine (that's how I'm writing this), but when I try to connect to any wireless network, it hangs at Acquiring IP Address, then asks me for my WEP key again, I enter it, and the process starts over. I tried using WICD, but I'm not sure if I set it up properly.
