Will the alternate installer cd for 10.04.1 have the option to install gnome desktop like the normal install cd? Also, if I install from the alternate installer cd, and use remastersys to backup my system afterward, will that use the default text based install that the alternate installer cd did?
View 1 Repliesis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an openSUSE 11.3 system happily running KDE 4.4.4, and want to add Gnome desktop as an option. I go into YAST->S/W Mgmt->Patterns and click on 'Gnome Desktop Environment' and get this warning - "pattern:gnome-11.3-22.1.x86_64 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided" (screenshot here). It looks like the conflict is with patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure, which lists the Gnome RPM and pulseaudio as conflicts.
Questions: Is this only for bookkeeping purposes, or is there really a conflict having both desktops on one system? Will I have conflicts with pulseaudio? (I know I can disable it) If I want to go ahead, should I just select deinstallation of the ..._pure RPM?
I'm trying to install 10.04.2 on a Dell machine with no current OS. I finally found the thread that said to use the alternate installer if you have a RAID: so i'm using ubuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386.iso, burned using Roxio on my (different) windows box.
I go through the early installer steps ok, get to partitioning, choose guided resize (potential tangent: first time this modified partitions #6 and #7, second time it was just "use entire disk"). Then "installing base system", then a dialog that says: Please insert the disk labeled "Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - release i386 (20110211.d) in '/cdrom/' and press enterWell, the disk is already in the drive, and the installer has previously claimed it's reading from /cdrom. Reinserting it doesn't change anything. My only choices are <Continue> or <Go Back>, both of which display the same message. So i can't get past this, or escape, or do anything other than power down.
Looking at the disk on my Win machine, it appears to be labeled "Ubuntu 10.04.2 L" (can't tell if that's truncated or not).
Does the installer really demand a certain label on the disc to succeed?? how to successfully install in this situation?
Update: just to be sure, i checked the md5sum, and it's correct.
I have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.

What package allows you to run the installer that is found on the LiveCD?
Also, is it possible to have a Ubuntu installer that uses updated packages rather than the LiveCD so they are current when installed rather than the release packages to save on the download/updating time?
I'm downloading 10.4 and I don't know which version I should use. I'm using a laptop so does that qualify as alternate? What is alternate and how is it different from desktop?

In some cases gnome works poorly when reading configuration from the .gnome2 directory. I would like to read config files from version specific directories. Is there any way to specify this when starting gnome? Environment variables perhaps? I know how to move the .gconf directories but this is not sufficient. I need to read the .gnome2 from a different path.

I also got the feeling that that website was for the daily build and may not have the MD5 checksum for the release version. What the MD5 checksum is for Ubuntu 11.04 64bit: alternate download and desktop versions.

I just used the alternate installer to set up an old box as a server, and it doesn't install the driver for the adapter. lsusb finds the adapter, but I don't get a wlan* listed in /dev/. how I can determine what module(s) are used to run this adapter on the desktop so I can load them on the older box? Or is there some package I should install from the CD to help auto-detect the adapter?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable...
I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
For some time, I have been trying to install fedora 14 on my pc, as I want a dual boot machine. It has windows xp already installed and running. I used liveusb creator to make a bootable usb. the problem is, when I log in and start the installer, it runs until I get the option "Select storage device". When I select the appropriate option , basic storage device, the installer screen disappears, and nothing more happens. I shall be much obliged if someone can point out the problem. My computer is a Dell optiplex 745 , 2.8 GHz with 512 Mb of RAM.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop from USB pendrive I can't see the sda partitions in the manual partition editor.I have a dual boot PC with Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.10 running (see below for more details). Using the 10.04 Ubuntu desktop edition on a USB stick (pendrivelinux), I can boot without a problem and everything works fine: mount/unmount of all my drives, read data, etc. But I can't install the 10.04!When running the installer, at the point where the partition is selected, I choose "manual" as option. On the next screen I only see the drives/partitions starting from /dev/sdb1... to sde, but NOT /dev/sda. The "Add" button is greyed out, I can only edit the existing partitions. When I edit and press forward I get an error telling me that the SWAP partition is missing. I already HAVE a swap on sda.
I also tried booting Ubuntu 10.04 and then running the installer - no difference. I also remove the plug from one of the drives (sde) - still the installer doesn't show me sda.I would like to install 10.04 without messing up my Windows XP Pro and without messing up my /home partition or any other partitions that are non-Ubuntu stuff.In former years this used to be the easiest part, now it looks like a challenge. My system is an ASUS moderboard with an AMD chipset. The solution came when I entered the BIOS and disabled the cool&quiet feature for the chipset.
After installation, I have to keep cool&quiet disabled in order to run ubuntu. Re-enabling cool&quiet results in ramdon restarts or freezing
When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

After KDE starts there is the Debian Installer icon on the desktop and usually it will work, but not for me. I click the icon and wait for it to start but nothing happens?

(I tested it on my laptop, also using ubuntu) My problem is, the driver installer is graphical and my server is not. Is there a way I can just run the installer in server WITHOUT installing gdm or a desktop environment? So far, everyone I've read says to have xserver,xorg,fluxbox(or other gui), etc. I just want to run the installer through SSH, and I know about the -X tag.

I am interested in removing the gnome panels from my desktop in 10.04. I know i can auto-hide the top and bottom panels and there is also an option to delete them. When they auto-hide a small white line is still visible and i accidentally hover over them sometimes briefly showing them also. I also do not want to do anything permanent like deleting them.In some past forum posts i saw people saying go to System>Preferences>Sessions but this option seems to be missing in lucid and these seem to be for slightly older versions on ubuntu. I then added the gnome-session-properties command in the Edit Menu... of System but all it did was launch Startup Applications. One post i saw said to go into Sessions, required sessions and make it empty. Should this work like i want it too and if so, is there an option like this still in Lucid. I basically want to remove the panels completely from my desktop, but still want to be able to bring them back if i want too also (Hopefully without having to edit them again, but i can live with it if i do).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.
