OpenSUSE :: OpenSSL - Fail To Create RootCA

$CA -create_serial -out ${CATOP}/$CACERT $CADAYS -batch -keyfile ${CATOP}/private/$CAKEY -selfsign -extensions v3_ca -infiles ${CATOP}/$CAREQ

I tried removing the -create_serial option and then it complains about the -selfsign option. Removed that too - but it just errors out, never creating my root ca cert. Happens with openssl 0.9.8m/1.0.0 on suse linux 9.

OpenSUSE Install :: New Kernel Fail To Run ?

Sep 2, 2010

Out of curiosity, I decided to try the kernel-desktop-base-2.6.35-rc6.15.1.x86_64.rpm downloaded with 1-click install from here

Now my desktop can't even boot and says

Code:

Want me to fall back to /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HD725016GLA380_GEK830RBTV12MA-part2? (Y/n)

Both options got me nowhere. how to debug this situation?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Updates Fail (Repo Not Available)

May 21, 2011

The repository [URL] is not currently (or no longer) valid. The path still exists up to the "Contrib" level, however, there are no files or subdirectories under it. There are also two siblings at the "Contrib" directory level ("Live" and "Update:") and there are no files under them either other than a single subdirectory called "Test" under "Update:". Does anyone know if the updates that used to be available in this repository have moved and, if so, where to? If the repository is no longer required and there is no replacement, I'll simply remove it. I have also noticed issues for several months where the updater applet will go into an "updating" state and never return from it.

OpenSUSE :: VNCserver Desktop Launch - Fail On KMserver

May 15, 2010

OpenSUSE11.2 (x86_64)
KDE 4.3.5

My normal windowing operations are fine. I have no problems running parallel kde desktop sessions (1 user, 1 root), switching back and forth with ease. I have been able to get vnc remote connections to work, but the only desktop environment I can get to run twm. When I try to start kde it fails with:

startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib64/libkdeinit4_klauncher.so
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
Communication error with KInit.
startkde: Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.

Which is weird because:
> which ksmserver
/usr/bin/ksmserver

I have this in my .vnc xstartup:
#!/bin/sh
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
/usr/bin/startkde

I've read several related vnc threads. It appears to me I have a more general X11 setup failure, but at this point I'm lost.

OpenSUSE :: 11.1 - Dolphin Crashing (Machine Fail Responding)

Sep 15, 2010

I've experienced some problems with Dolphin. It crashed a lot, so hard that I've to reset the machine. I have a Vaio VGN SZ 750. Since OpenSUSE 11.1 it used to fail responding, or when I have to move a lot of files, it starts to slow the machine until I have to turn off or restart. I really don't like it as I like Konqueror, so I'd like to know if I can uninstall Dolphin and use konqueror as default. Can I use the camera, the digital-"reader" and the Nvidia card of my laptop? Any link?

It fails with an "unable to compile kernel module" error.

I stupidly overwrote the log file without backing it up. It had a lot of compile warnings, but I didn't see anything that looked like a compile error. I'll try to generate it again.

OpenSUSE :: Yast And Software Updates Fail After Updating To 11.4 Distro

Apr 23, 2011

While upgrading from Suse 11.3 to 11.4 using zypper my computer froze. I allowed it to sit for 7 hrs before regrettably restarting the machine. I was later able to install 11.4 successfully, however it seems now yast2 is broken.

Whenever I try to use the sofware management tool the following error appears:

Code:

Interesting enough zypper gives the following following text when I use the ls command

Code:

I thought the two files were not linked so I performed a #ln, but that yeilded this error.

Code:

ln: failed to create symbolic link `libzypp.so.706': File exists

I think the two issues are related, but I'm pretty stuck at this point. I've read about people having similar issues with yast2 after distro updates, but their issues seems slightly different as those solution do not work for me.

OpenSUSE Install :: Services Fail At Boot - Save To Turn Them Off?

Jun 2, 2011

during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services. Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed. The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I donīt. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?

OpenSUSE Install :: Gnome3 - NVidia Drivers - Multiple Monitor Fail ?

Jul 24, 2011

I have installed openSUSE with Gnome3.

I had to install the nVidia proprietary drives so the OS would boot into Gnome3 and not fail safe mode. Without the proprietary drivers installed the display settings said:

Driver: software rasterizer in use

After installing the nVidia drivers Gnome3 works in one monitor, but I would like to be able to use my other two monitors (totaling three with two video cards.)

When I run nvidia-settings to generate an xorg.conf file it hangs, so I used nvidia-xorgconf to generate the xorg file and then used nvidia-settings to configure my extra screens.

This fails with a permissions error, running sudo nvidia-settings fails with the following error:

ERROR:

So, I ran nvidia-settings, saved the settings file to my /home/$USER dir, then copied xorg.conf to /etc/X11/

Logging out and logging back into Gnome fails with the error:

This problem extends to Ubuntu running Gnome3, so my thinking is:
a) Imma id10t and something in my xorg.conf file is wrong,
b) there is an issue with Gnome3/nVidia/Multiple displays.

I would really like to use Gnome3, it works on multiple other machines (ironically all ATI devices) just not the machine I use all day long...

Here is my xorg.conf file as generated by nvidia-settings.
