Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Drivers - Freezing / Locking

Aug 26, 2010

I installed Ubuntu yesterday to try it out, but encountered some freezing/locking issues. Seems to be related to the video card. I'm running Ubuntu in low graphics mode, but wanted to install the proper ATI drivers. I went to the ATI website for my X1950 (sucks, I know). Downloaded them just fine but when I run them nothing happens. I'm used to Windows so I'm probably doing something wrong.

Hardware :: Mint Locking Up Randomly?

Jun 13, 2011

The latest version of Linux Mint with GNOME ROCKS on my PC.

However I noticed randomly X will lock up and have to be killed.

Checking /var/log/syslog this is what shows up during the time of when it happens:

Code:

Jun 13 23:43:18 davidspc NetworkManager[700]: <info> (eth1): DHCPv4 state changed nbi -> preinit
Jun 13 23:43:18 davidspc dhclient: Listening on LPF/eth1/ac:81:12:30:dd:9b
Jun 13 23:43:18 davidspc dhclient: Sending on LPF/eth1/ac:81:12:30:dd:9b
Jun 13 23:43:18 davidspc dhclient: Sending on Socket/fallback

[Code]....

I also checked "top" when X was frozen by "CTRL-ALT-F2" but the CPU usage was at 1 percent so it wasn't being throttled.

CentOS 5 :: Stalling, Freezing And Just Plain Locking Up With 5.4 And Gnome?

Feb 1, 2010

I've been having problems for a while with my pc at work and after a bout with a similar desktop I figured out that it somehow relates to the kernel updates from 5.3 to 5.4. I have two machines with identical motherboards (Asus M3a32-mvp), cpu ( athlon 64 X2 6400) and memory (8 gigs Corsair) with different video cards.

My desktop at work started with Centos 5.2 and was kept updated to 5.4 along the way. The other PC is my desktop at home and it started out at 5.3 and stayed there until recently mainly because my wife mostly uses it so I just never got around to doing updates.

Here is the problem, a while back the work PC started doing weird things, it would stutter, freeze up, sometime the mouse cursor would freeze into a cross hair and sometimes completely lock me out where even the keyboard wouldn't work so I had to kill power to reboot anf get control back. I eventually discovered that if I still had keyboard access I could jump to a console window, log in and killall nautilus or killall gnome-panel and I might get things back to normal for a while. I can even log in with another machine to use the killall commands if the keyboard locks up. I checked TOP during these episodes to see what was killing the system, I figured something was running a muck and gobbling up processing time or memory but nothing shows that appears to be off.

Like I said the home system was on 5.3 and not showing the stuttering problems so I even considered that the video card drivers might be causing something, that is until I tried to update the home system and got the same issues.

I had a hard drive failing at home so I figured I'd back up the data and reinstall the main system on a new one so I could start over with a clean system. This time I started from 5.4. Almost imediately I discovered the freezing problems after the complete install so after trying a few things I wiped and reloaded, couldn't mess around too long with it as the wife was really complaining about not having a PC, a 5.3 version. Bingo, now the system functions perfectly, no stuttering or freezing up. I then used yum updates to updates everything but the kernel. This also seemed to give me a system without freezes so I stopped there with the home machine.

Just to be clear the home pc used the standard yum repositories defaulted in the setup i didn't add any so it isn't a 3rd party repo causing the problems with the home machine. So it looks like the updates from 5.3 to 5.4 regarding the kernel seem to be causing me problems.

It's getting so bad at work I'm planning on wiping and reloading a 5.3 version and going from there but that's alot of work so I'd really like to just fix what is going on with the 5.4 version.

General :: Compaq R4000 Laptop Randomly Locking Up?

Mar 12, 2010

I have a Compaq R4000 laptop with 2GB of RAM, running Ubuntu Linux 9.10. It is randomly locking up on me, approximately once every two days. I have a second partition with Windows XP Home installed, and I have had the system lock up in XP as well, meaning I believe this is a hardware issue. I have run two passes of Memtest86+ with no errors. The system has a fan that has died, so I initially suspected overheating. However the system just locked up on me while I was in the middle of typing a script to warn me / shut down if the temperature was too high. When the lockup happened the temperature was 88°F, so I am now starting to believe that may not be the issue. When the system locks up, I cannot SSH in nor ping it. Nothing shows in syslog when I reboot. I have configured it to send syslog messages to a local server as well and no messages appear on that server when the lockup happens.

Fedora :: MPlayer / VLC Freezing Randomly In F13

Aug 18, 2010

I'm running Fedora 13 32-bit on a Samsung NC20 netbook (specifications here: [URL]. Everything works fine, with the exception of media playback via VLC and mplayer. The biggest problem is that the entire OS frequently locks up when exiting full-screen playback in either application, and occasionally locks-up when starting playback via mplayer. Video is also always on top of other windows, regardless of whether the application is configured to be always on top.

The lock-ups are severe enough to warrant powering off the machine, as CTRL+ALT+Fx does nothing. I suspect this is related to the machine's VIA CPU/graphics chipset - I've had problems with them before in other Linux distros, but playback was fine under F12 on the same machine. Because the video windows are always on top, I suspect there's a general issue affecting media playback - hopefully configuration related!

Slackware :: KDE Randomly Freezing - Need To Restart?

Jan 27, 2010

I installed Slackware 13 (full install) a few days ago and every thing is working well except KDE freezes (I'd say randomly but lately it seems as if it happens after I use a KDE program or component.) and nothing works except the mouse cursor, I have to use the power on/off to reset the computer. After a reboot and fsck checks the partition that was unmounted improperly I log in delete a few bad files (.serverauth.XXXX, socket-speeedy and tmp-speedy) I'm usually able to restart KDE using startx. Googling around I think it may be my on board Intel video, dmesg id's it as the Intel 830M Chipset. BTW, this box ran Mandrake 10.1 for the last 6-7 years without problem, for what's worth.

What's even weirder is it unlocks when I press power on my desktop. When it freezes, I have several windows opened, and I'm switching between windows. I can still move the mouse, but cant click anywhere. Cant select anything yet there are still cursors flashing (text editor or terminal). The only thing that will unfreeze everything is the signal from pressing power (not rebooting, just quickly pressing power).

Ubuntu :: Freezing With Flash - Screen Randomly Whited Out Fading In Splotches To Black And Then Back To White

Dec 18, 2010

I am having a problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio FW series. It has Nvidia graphics that I don't think the OS is taking advantage of, whatever. It also came with 64-bit Windows, it's a 32-bit OS, and again, as far as I have been concerned, whatever. It's been functioning fine for the half a year since I installed it.

Until recently. My computer has been freezing. What happened first is that the screen randomly whited out, fading in splotches to black and then back to white. This freaked me out, but restarting seemed to smooth things out. Then windows in the OS wouldn't resize, then Flash videos would freeze the OS up, repeating the 2 seconds of sound it last played. Over and over again. In a loop. On a white screen. Sometimes with vertical stripes.

This all happens inconsistently, and whenever I restart it's fine again. I just want to know if there's a deeper issue so that I can resolve it. Otherwise I have been completely satisfied, as a previous Windows and OSX user who is computer-competent within a GUI.

Ubuntu :: How To Trace GUI Locking Up

Jan 1, 2010

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.10. The GUI regularly locks up. I can SSH to it from another machine everytime it locks up. Top shows Xorg consuming 99% cpu. I think downgrading the nvidia driver to 173 from 185 helped reduce the lockups. Before they seemed very random and very often. Now it seems to happen when copying a large amount of files over the network but I'm not entirely sure. It ran the electricsheep screensaver all day today with no problems and the RSS euphoria GL screensaver all day yesterday. If I copy 2GB of files from one local directory to another no problem, if I do it through cifs mounted samba shares it will lock up for sure. Small amounts seem ok. Apt-get install has had some lock ups too.

I don't really know how to trace what's going on beyond installing ssh and finding out that it's totally alive inside. I don't know what to look for in log files nor which ones to look at. I didn't recognize anything wrong in Xorg log. In the system log I look for the time gap between when it locked up and I shut down and when I rebooted but I didn't notice anything.

Ubuntu :: X Is Locking Up System

Feb 4, 2011

I first started experiencing it when I would leave my computer logged in overnight.I would come in and find the screen frozen and flickering. When I ssh'd into the machine, I could see that Xorg was using 100% of the CPU and a ton of memory. I could kill kdm, but not Xorg. Only a full reboot would cure it.When it would reboot, my second monitor sometimes would not work and it would take several reboots to get it up and running. Recently, I was working in matlab and had Xorg freeze on my numerous times...always when I had my second monitor up and running.

The card in question is an Nvidia 9800 GX 2.It almost seems like GPU0 (the one running the second monitor) is dead or dieing and is causing instability when it is up and running..but I've also heard that X running away and locking up the system is a known bug.

Ubuntu :: Locking Printer Config

Jul 24, 2010

I run 6 machines at our local library with Ubuntu Lucid. Here is a problem. We use a network printer accessed through the ethernet cabling system. It isn't attached to a computer. I want to set it up so the Ubuntu computers find it by ip address, it has a static address. Then I would like to lock down the printer config as each week other printers show up there, all basically the same printer but only works if the patrons pick the correct iteration of it and it doesn't always stick to the default option I haver set up. So people get confused and then pick another one and no prints. I want them to click print and bingo only one printer shows up and it is the ip address I have set up. Ubuntu seems to love to add numerous copies of printers and in this situation it is creating havoc. So can I somehow set a command to lock the printer config and eliminate all this confusion? I hope this is clear as it is a fairly complicated issue. But is reflecting poorly on Linux to people who come in and I want it to b e very stable.

how to get it and i will get it

alright the problem is every now and then my system locks up and i try things like ctrl+alt+Fn and ctrl+alt+del and ctrl+alt+backspace but nothing works exsept when hold down the power button for a hard reset and occasionally somthing else happens that can only be comppared to a BSOD in windows but with out the blue screen it just goes to a screen with vertical grey stripes for 2 seconds ish then reboots

so i dont have the slightest idea of what it could be tho i think it could be something to do with the graphics chip maybe?

Ubuntu :: Wine Crash And Locking Xserver On 11.04

Oct 23, 2010

Recently upgraded to 11.04 - everything was working well in 10.04. However, running programs in wine (or running wincfg) now causes the xserver to lockout after a random interval. At best, I get dumped back to the gdm, at worst it needs a hard reboot. I've tried using wine versions 1.3 and 1.2, but both cause the same problem. I've also tried installing ldfontconfig from 10.04 as I read that this was a resolution for people having similar issues, but no joy.

I'm running 64 bit ubuntu, and have an ati graphics card

This is a real deal breaker for me - I need MSOffice, but really don't want to go through the hassle of downgrading to 10.04.

I have tried editing both /usr/bin/soffice and /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice as described in the links (below), but this has not helped.

Here are the relevant links I have found

[URL]

According to this thread, the method I tried (setting SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=0) was based on earlier versions of openoffice.org It no longer works because as of openoffice.org 3 the file locking is built into the program.

Ubuntu :: Can't Configure Screen Locking In Xubuntu

May 15, 2011

I'm having difficulty disabling the screen lock feature when resuming from suspend in Xubuntu 11.04 x64. The screen lock seems to be implemented in xscreensaver, so I disabled the screen saver in the Settings Manager. This did not work. In the 'Power Manager' section of Settings Manager, I unchecked "lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate' and this did not work. I found a possible workaround in a bug report that seems to describe the problem I'm having: [URL] but the solution offered there (install gconf-editor and disable screen lock from there) did not work. The bug report states that the problem was fixed in xfce4-utils 4.4.2-1ubuntu1, but from what I can tell the version of that package in 11.04 is newer than that. The only thing that seems to work is to completely uninstall xscreensaver

Fedora :: 15 Locking Up On Thinkpad X41

Jun 2, 2011

I've recently installed F15 on my old thinkpad X41 to give it a go after sticking to ubuntu for quite a bunch of years now.

Somehow there seems to be a problem with the installation tho: the screen freezes up (as does the keyboard) after a while using it - not many programs open, a couple of workspaces enabled, no memory or CPU stress whatsoever - and all i'm left with is a moving mouse cursor. Ctrl + alt + F2 doesn't work and the only solution is to restart the laptop again.

Tried the fallback mode and same thing still happens, so maybe its not a graphic card issue.
