OpenSUSE :: Firefox Is Freezing Up
Jan 27, 2010just now I had to restart it 10 times to get it to work accurately. with windows I think what I would do is uninstall firefox then reinstall it. will that work on linux as well?and what other ways can I debug/clean up this system a little better since it seems to not work the same as windows, although basically it's the same, just a little different, different type of file system, etc.

May 1, 2010I've just upgraded to Kubuntu 10.04 and I've noticed that the new FireFox 3.6.3 keeps freezing up, using 100% CPU and lots of disk activity for seconds at a time for apparently no reason at all. The OS itself doesn't freeze up, it's Firefox only, but it's still annoying since I surf the web a lot. I see a lot of maxing out of my dual-core CPU's with System Monitor and I don't like it. Is anyone else having these problems?

Jun 14, 2011After using Iceweasel/Firefox 4 on Squeeze for a while (an hour or two), the bookmark toolbar becomes unresponsive and sometimes the folders (I have some bookmark folders), when clicked, will open but as soon as I move the cursor to hover over the link (to select it) the menu disappears. I never had the problem with Iceweasel/Firefox 3x. The problem is fixed by restarting the browser but that is not always a good solution nor SHOULD it have to be done.

Feb 24, 2010Firefox started acting funny.On most video sites, but not all, there wouldbe no sound.Along with this, some of these sites would also have the glitch that videos would play for about 3 seconds, then stop. If I moved the slider to a different point in the video, it would again work for a few seconds, then stop. If I close FF and try to reopen, I get an error message that it is already running, although if I don't leave it openet that message.I then go to the system monitor and shut down the sleeping FF process, and can then restart FF and the problem is fixed for a few hours.

Apr 15, 2010For the past week or so every time I've tried to launch Firefox it would freeze within a few seconds and the process 'firefox-bin' would go Zombie. I would force quit FF and then try and reboot the machine. Then I would get an error before restarting informing me that 'firefox-bin' is nonresponsive and it gives me the options to cancel or reboot anyway.
I'm not entirely sure what's causing this, however I have an inkling suspicion that it's being caused by Netvibes and/or Google Voice, which doesn't make sense because I've been using both services for quite some time now and this is the first time I've encountered any problems.
Has anyone out there encountered somethingt similar? Update: I've been browsing for about ten minutes now without launching google voice or netvibes and I haven't had any issue yet, so I'm pretty sure those two are causing the problems. But why?
Update2: There's a chance that I could be wrong, but I do know that GV and Netvibes are causing the crash as well as a whole slew of other random websites. I was browsing a website earlier (can't remember the name of it anymore) That also caused my browser to freeze.
To the best of my knowledge I haven't done anything different since this issue started, all I know is that I can no longer safely and conveniently brows the web on this laptop anymore.

I tested intensively and I can say that it freezes when Flash is going to reproduce a sound.

May 8, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, Natty Narwhal, 64-bit. I've been using it since Alpha, and Firefox and xChat have always frozen my system. I update daily, so I know I'm on the newest updates, yet they still freeze my system. I've tried doing a total uninstall on both of them and reinstalled to the same freezes.

Jun 25, 2011Flash is causing severe problems on my slackware laptop. It happens pretty much only when I go on ..... and playback starts. Then the whole screen flickers and everything freeze. I have no mouse or keyboard (cursor is frozen) and I need to SSH to the machine to kill the process "plugin-containe" whatever it might be.
SO basically, is there anything to do to prevent such problems?

Recently, just on Ubuntu (10.04), Firefox Portable has started freezing on pages containing Flash. Anyone else experiencing this? I've done a clean re-install of Firefox Portable, then just added Flash, and it still freezes.

Nov 9, 2010I've got a fun one for you. What makes absolutely any attempt to view a flash video crash Ubuntu 10.10, both in firefox and chromium? Lately, firefox began doing this. I switch to chromium, same thing. Also, the system completely locks up after about 30 minutes online if I can get the thing to work at all. When this happens, the rounded edges of all windows disappear, the menus become unresponsive, and any attempt to open the system monitor to end the offending process results in an "Unable to fork new process, system resource unvailable" something like that.
My entire online routine goes like this: open terminal, su to admin account to enable ufw (which will not run at boot no matter what I try), su to normal, limited account, open web browser, things explode (or work for 15 minutes before freezing completely.)

Aug 7, 2011i'm using debian wheezy and whenever i'm playing a webm video, typically on videos, totem and mplayer can't play video. the video just freezes. (i assume because they both use gstreamer.) when i try to use vlc when those 2 aren't working, the video does play but there is no sound.

Sep 15, 2010I have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.
My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.

Feb 15, 2010Trying to install Opensuse 11.2 (64bit) on a new machine isn't working well. After loading the linux kernel, the green screen with the progress bar appears, and the mouse and keyboard turn off (at least, the leds go out and there's no response) The progress bar never moves. Esc key doesn't work either. I've tried safe mode install and other options, but the same result follows.
It's going onto a Tyan S2912 with AMD 2347HE. The hard drive is a Western Digital SATA drive I bought today. There's 4GB of RAM, and the DVD drive is a Toshiba USB unit. I don't know what else to say about it. If it helps, I've been running Pelican HPC (live) without a hard-drive andgot tired of setting the network configuration and installing a ouple of programs with every boot. (Which is why I bought the hard drive today). I want to install Opensuse 11.2, but I've tried Debian (no luck on detecting the hard-drive) and Windows 7 (installed fine, but there are no drivers for the embedded video).

Oct 7, 2010After years of working with windows eventually I decided to move to Linux. For learning swimming, I just jumped in the water! So, for learning Linux, I formatted my hard drive and install openSuse 11.2. After 2 weeks I'm doing ok except bunch of little things that I'm learning. First thing is my mouse and key board. They sometimes(like once a day) for some reason freez or move slowly and I don't have any wired application running except firefox and openoffice.

Jan 28, 2010After migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 2.6.31.8 causes trouble, fell back to 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!

Feb 5, 2011We have just installed the 11.3 version of opensuse in a Dell Poweredge T610 with 8 Gb in RAM and two (2) Xeon Quadcore proccesors. Well, the first time the Opensuse resets the computer, after the installation (it was fine, w/o any problem) the system goes frezze showing a screen which reports a BUG ERROR in the Kernel code, specifically:

After a "button off" reset the machine boots fine and we could finish the configuration of the applications that we needed. We tested the machine by two days and it didn't show again the problem mentioned, and we believe it was a little bug in the installation, but today, the server halts again in the boot process 3 (three) times before it runs again well.We have repeated this installation in other computers, one in a 32 bit version and other in 64 bits version (like the Dell) and only in the last one has repeated the problem, I mean, no problems in the 32 bit installation. Fortunately, this new server is just a replacement for an old machine, that is running with the 10.3 version. Perhaps, does we continue using the 10.3 instead of the 11.3 meanwhile it is deputed?
OpenSUSE :: Desktop Freezing All Programs Seem To Continue Running Smoothly?
Mar 15, 2010Several times in the last few days the desktop has frozen. I don't know if it's KDE issue or another conflict.All programs seem to continue running smoothly, but none of the menus on windows will work, or anything in the task manager, or desktop itself. I've tried killing the task manager but it doesn't affect the issue. If I knew what process was causing this, I might be able to restart it.

Jun 8, 2011I am currently using opensuse to run a server, however I am experiencing some difficulties. Every once in a while, and I mean completely randomly. This will occur out of no where, and then not happen for five days, then occur twenty times in a row. What happens is the computer runs fine, and all is well but suddenly it wont connect to the internet. All applications are fine and everything is working. It isn't frozen, just won't load webpages. I am using a belkin 111v2 wireless g adapter and it usually works fine.
So when the internet freezes, if I unplug any usb the computer freezes. The mouse stops moving and the keyboard won't respond. The caps lock light won't even turn on. However the laser on the mouse is on, but the computer won't respond. Its like its shutting off the usb hubs. The only thing to do is force shut it off and restart until i no longer have the problem. Sometimes it helps if I open it and re-seat the ram, but that gets old. Does anyone have a solution?

After I updated to 2.6.31.8 it didnt recognize it until I installed the ralink-firmware 1.1.3.5. After that I could configure it using rt2870sta setting in modules. But once I restarted it would freeze after a few seconds after I could see the desktop on startup. I reconfigured the card to be 'manually' powered, but now it just freezes when I click on the access point I want to connect to. Jan 17, 2010I am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
