I have some problems accessing a smb share by name. Few day ago I was able to access the share by name but seems that today I cannot access anymore. I tried to restart the computer .. but nothing happened. Notice that the dns server is responding and is working correctly.
How can I debug this problem. It's annoying because I don't know all the IP addresses of our internal servers.
i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
I have a samba server on my LAN. It can be accessed without any problems from Windows machines on the LAN without password. I have two computers that I have updated to OpenSuse 11.2 (both used to run 10.3). Since doing this upgrade I can no longer access the samba share from the Suse machines. Basically, both Dolphin and Konqueror ask for a username and password to access "avoca" (the workgroup).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have currently have opensuse 11.2 installed. I am trying to setup samba shares which you can only access as certain user. Currently looks like the only way I can access these share is use root username/password!
I want to which GUI I need to use to setup this up properly. And of course what setting to exactly to use.
I've used Samba for several years and when it works it's great. Unfortunately from time to time it seems to get messed up and either all the 7 machines on my home network can't be seen or I can't access the shares on some. I have 2 Windows XP computers 4 Kubuntu and one Linux Mint KDE, all the latest versions. I'd rather not plough through all the documentation for Samba, but would really like a "model" smb.conf with a few comments about parts that might have legitimate variants. I have researched this with Google searches many times but have failed to find the information I need in concise form.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have set up RHEL 5 file server with Winbind and samba services running.I am able to assign and authenticate windows XP users against my RHEL 5 server.No issues.But one or two of my users are using Windows 7 Ultimate edition and they are not able to access my network samba shares.I can view the shares in windows 7 box but trying to access gives me "network access denied error".But i can access the same share in Windows xp machine for the above tested users.Working great but not in windows 7 box.I haven't tested with Vista OS yet.

How to do this settings right to work fine, the ip are assigned by dhcp I don't use any static ip .When I try to browse the internet from the other computers some site's like {.com ; .org ; .info} are block, other site from {.ro} are working. Someone tell me something about turn off all my filters, but I don't know where to find this filter to turn it off. And when I use samba I can't have and internet access or vice versa. View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message
- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)
This was followed by a message box containing
- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents
Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

Q: How can I allow my users to mount a cifs share without an entry in fstab in OpenSuse 11.4?
I have an answer myself. Until OpenSuse 11.2 I could mount my samba shares by making mount.cifs and umount.cifs setuid root. Today I installed OpenSuse 11.4. Unfortunately mount.cifs isn't anymore allowed to be setuid due to security concerns. Security is not an issue in my case, so I copied the mount.cifs and umount.cifs from 11.2 to make it work again:
1. Download cifs-mount-3.4.2-1.1.3.1.x86_64.rpm from this repository (I use 64 bit):
"http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/"
2. Extract the files mount.cifs and umount.cifs from the rpm and copy them to /sbin
3. Make them setuid root:

There is a new feature in Windows 7 that make u able to create a virtual WiFi and share ur internet access with many others.
I know there is ad-hoc but sometimes it has problems, for example I couldn't connect to my friend's ad-hoc network (he is using Windows 7) but I _could_ connect to the virtual WiFi he created, it appeared just like any other wireless network unlike ad-hoc
so is there any way to create a virtual WiFi and not ad-hoc in Linux?
I am running puppy linux in VB, I cant access shared folders.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a share accessible from XP. However if I go for lunch and come back when I click on the share in Explorer it says its not accessible. When I click on it again it works. Its like the network card in the Suse server is going to sleep but I cant see any settings for it. I know where they are in XP and wonder if they are somewhere in openSuse? Or if there is some other explanation.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu on one machine and open SUSE on the other. Both connected with an ethernet cable to the same router. Both connect to the internet ok. I did manage to set up 2 machines both running Ubuntu with file sharing but now I have switched one to SUSE I seem to be getting into a mess. Ubuntu sees the SUSE machine but does not open any folders. SUS does NOT see the Ubutu machine. I have looked for a beginners guide to setting up file shaing with SUSE without success. (I like SUSE better because I can use my Audiophile sound card "out of the box")

In the Windows network, there are 2 or more shares as follows:
I can access both shares in nautilus e.g. "smb://bla.bla.company.com/share $". The shares are mounted then in "home/user/.gvfs/". ok.
In one of shares, is a file-based repo, which I can access easily with svn.
Unfortunately when I try to checkout any normal folder from a share (as in MS$ with Tortoise), I fail...
What's more in the file-based repo, external references exist to other shares in the network, the name is as "file:///X:/folder/file.txt". SVN gives error messages about such references and does not access files (where "X:/" is also mounted, but as a "test$ to smb://bla.bla.company.com/test$" in "home/user/.gvfs/ ").
My questions:
- what is the best solution to mount shares, so I can access all the SVN repos?
- How can I access normal files and folders from a share with svn?
- How can the problem with external file references in a file-based SVN repo can be solved? without to checkout/commit files "manually"...
- Some checkouted scripts (Perl, etc.) use libs from shares:
"Use lib qw(r:/tools/perl/lib/). how to get around this as well?
- How can I change mount-names: "test$ on smb://bla.bla.company.com/test$" to something like "share-test$?
- How can I change the mount location? in "home/user/SAMBA/" instead of "/home/user/.gvfs/"..
I had tried to use "fuse-smb": installed, created config, but when I run "fusesmb /home/user/SHARES/", i get an error message: smb.conf is missing.. Where can I get this config?
And one last question: Can someone recommend me a svn-gui? i have tried tried rabbitcvs, esvn and some others .. but all either do not work or crash.
I'm not sure, but maybe I can use svn and tortoise in wine, and checkout/commit the necessary files from/to "home/user/project/"? there raises the questions whether it is possible to install tortoise in wine and how to mount the shares on the wine? How to manage the hard-coded lib-names in some scripts...
have a server here running opensuse 11.3 that I need to access via network using samba.
Samba is working so far and I can ping the serve and browse the shares from windows (WinXP) computers; but only via the IP.Now I've read up on samba on this forum and other sources, like the official samba documentation and compared my smb.conf with an older one on another server which works (and even copied this one over to the new one) - to no avail.I seem to be missing something and I just can't find it.Since the problem is probably not in the smb.conf (previously working one doesn't work on new server) - where else could I have screwed up?
I'm using openSUSE11.0 in VirtualBox 2.2 on XP so files need to be shared between it and the host. But do I have to mount the share folder every time? Here's what I typed in terminal:

Installed a security update for samba tonight via Opensuse updater.Now, when trying to access my home network an authentication box pops up (never used to)Asks me to enter authentication for my home network.I enter my username and password and hit enter. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.
Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.
I'm having a strange problem with my network connection/DNS. I turn computer the on and it recognizes and connects to wireless or wired but I can't access any Internet resources or my router. If I ping the default gateway, I get no response and I get DNS errors from any network services that run at start up. If I stop and start the network daemon then it all works fine until the next time I turn on my laptop. It does this for both wireless and wired connection.
I've tried to edit the network interface information in YaST but it says that configuration is handled by knetworkmanager and I have no idea where that information is accessed. I should point out that it all worked fine until I tried to connect to open WAP at my school and couldn't so I connected to the wired network. Next morning I had this problem when connecting to my home network. My questions are 1. What could be the cause of this error and 2. where does one configure the network interfaces when using knetworkmanager
I have a windows machine (in a domain) and I have created 2 Virtual Machines with Suse 11.2 installed on them.Now, I want to share a folder in windows to both Suse images. I am succesfully able to do that.I used: mount -t cifs -o user..... command to mount it at /mnt/win on my linux and succesfully able to work with it.
Now, I want a user in my Linux box (both Linux images)to be able to write to the shared folder in windows (actually both linux images will write to the shared folder but it is based on acquairing locks and releasing them to be able to use the shared folder on windows).
I tried etc fstab and lot other options but my efforts were in vain.Simply put - I need a user in my linux box (suse 11.2) to be able to write to a windows shared folder.
figure out how to share the folder to only special user? For example I have two computers host1 with users: user1, user2, user3 and host2 with same users: user1, user2, user3, how to share test user2 folder form host1 to only user2 from host2 ? My system is openSuse 11.1. There is all Ive understood:

It works but either user2 from host2 cant write to test share on host1 (drwxr-xr-x) OR all can write in this share (drwxrwxrwx). Ive googled it, searched here and read this: Chapter16.File, Directory, and Share Access Controls, but without successes.
My samba seems to be mis-configured somehow. I had been using Ubuntu 10.04 and my samba browsing of my samba shares on my HTPC (running XBMCLive) had all been working fine. Then I upgraded to openSuSE 11.2 64bit. Great OS by the way!Ok so I chekced my other PC's running Ubuntu and going to the network folder I see my XBMCLive machine. Double click him and now I see my shares on that PC. So now I know its specific to my SuSE install.
Now on SuSE if I use Dolphin file manager and go to Network -> Samba Shares -> workgroup I dont see anything. And then down the bottom of the window I will see timeout error on workgroup. "workgroup" is the correct workgroup. All the services are running winbind, smbd, nmbd, xinit, swat. Firewall disabled.However when I try the above and I get the timeout error I then go to the address bar in Dolphin where it has smb as the drop down item and in the text field type in the XBMCLive PC ip address and hit enter. Then immediately I can see my shares!!! So it is working but I cant see my shares under Network->Samba Shares->workgroup.I notice in my samba error logs for log.smbd I keep seeing this;smbd_open_once_socket: open_socket_in: Address already in use
If this is the right forum i don't know, but I'm having a problem which crashes my home server when writing to Samba. Googling and a quick search in this forum didn't help me any further. Is there anyone with a clue what to do?When I write several hundreds MB to my Samba share from a Windows machine the machine crashes (both with Win XP and Win 7). The problem is reproducible, although the precise moment (about 1 minute) or amount transfered data varies (about 300 to 800 MB). Small writes go well.Reading about 5 GB from Samba to Windows went without a hitch.

I'm trying to share two folders via NFS. First I share /media/disk/, that works fine and mounts on a remote computer as expected. Then I try to also share /home/Videos/ but when I add this folder to my /etc/exports I can't mount any of the shares. I have tried to both do it on command line and with the Yast tool but the result is the same. I have checked permissions on both folders and they are the same. Also if I try to share only /home/Videos/ it won't mount either. What am I doing wrong?
View 9 Replies View RelatedNew SUSE 11.3 install connects to network/internet etc OK with DHCP-assigned IP address. When I switch to static IP, I can no longer ping internal network, or anything else. This works OK with SUSE 11.2 on same hardware and (as far as I can see) same setup. Some diagnostics are shown below.

Disabling the firewall makes no difference.
Not using a network manager (can't see how to assign fixed address if I do - all greyed out).

Thanks to swerdna's excellent website, I got my server box (just upgraded from 11.0 to 11.2) running Samba and serving my shares over the network, and my "client" machines can access them without a problem.However, I'm not having much luck setting up CIFS mounts on my Linux desktop. I have my all-purpose user added to the Samba auth list (via smbpasswd), and configured my client as swerdna's howto's specify, and I can access the files just find. However, when I try to mount the shares with this command:

I have searched for days on this problem and no one seems to have the fix. Everyone else seems to go off on tangents.I have 3 computers. One runs XP pro, one runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and one runs openSUSE 11.2.The two windows machines can share files between each other with no problems.On suse I setup samba correctly. When I go to Computer -> Network on suse, I then go into Samba Shares. Then I see my workgroup name. I click to go in and I can see all 3 of my PC's listed here.When I click on my XP pro machine,am prompted for a user name and password. I put it in and I gain access perfectly.
When I click on my Windows 7 machine, I am prompted for a user name and password. I enter it in and it prompts me again for the user name and password. It will not let me in.I have changed all of the settings in 7, I have disabled the firewall, I have changed the security policies, I have changed the encryption strength.Simply Samba is nolaying well with Windows 7. I cannot believe that I am the only one with this problem
On a small network i have 3 WinXP computers and i've just installed a two new ones with Win7 pre-installed. As server i'm running OpenSuSE 10.3 and Samba with only one share. As i mount it to WinXP computers all get same volume serial number:

We use application witch somehow only works when one/same volume serial number on a mounted drive is used.
