I am using CentOS 5.5 OS. I already install ntfs-3g rpm, but I don't know the command to mount network NTFS drive. I also want to mount it on my fstab file, so whenever it reloads, it can automatically mount on the specific folder.
View 9 RepliesI am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?
I'm dual booting with Windows 7 and would like to have my windows 7 user folder mount when I boot.
After some looking around I edited /etc/fstab to add the following line:
This works. But it mounts the windows partition from the root level. I'd like to just mount C:UsersFHSM (/Users/FSHM) to /mnt/windows.
I'm trying to get it so that when I click on the windows drive I get my windows user folder instead of having to click through from C: to get to it.
I'm the only user on this system but if I created a second windows user would my home folder mount for that person too or does setting the user ID prevent that from happening?

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing: Debian Lenny. I want to mount 2 NTFS partitions in my /etc/fstab file, so that I needn't manually mount them when I want to use them. One of the partitions is the primary partition on the same hard disk as my Debian /, /home, and /swap partitions. The other is a 2nd internal hard disk.
a) Should I use ntfs-3g instead of ntfs as the /etc/fstab filesystem? I want to be able to read and write to the partitions as a user and not just as root.
b) I have read on the forum that "mounting NTFS partitions through fstab is not a great idea" - I thought that any dangers of doing so were ancient history. Why would it not be a good idea?
c) Which options should I use?
d) If I use 'user' instead of 'users' so that one specific user (me) can use the partitions, how do I specify which user name? (The man page is annoyingly unclear about this).
I tried to mount my CD Rom drive and got this response: "mount: can't find cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"
I did see the CD Rom drive briefly after I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 but I couldn't access the drive and when I logged back in.

I have installed a cable that connects from the CPU's SATA motherboard connection to a removable drives' ESATA connection.I would like to be able to swap drives on the ESATA connection and have all users be able to read and write to these drives.I have created the directory /archive/ where I would like the drive(s) to mount.The drives are all formatted Fat 32 - but in the future I may use HFS for formatting.When I used the command (as root):mount /dev/sdc1 /archivethe drive was mounted (but read only)What can I use in my /etc/fstab file that will allow drives to be mounted and unmounted by all users on the system? However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.

I keep getting the message that the two lines I have edited in fstab are bad. The volumes are sda2 and sda8, and the volume names are SPACELAB and Spaceman. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have reformatted my hard drive with allocation size 64K(formatted on windows with 64k setting) for a better performance on my WDTV HD media player(dealing with large files).When I mount this drive on Linux, the properties tells me that"blksize=4096".If I keep writing files using this default setting(blksize=4096) to my NTFS formatted hard drive, will my WDTV be able to benefit from the performance improvement of 64k allocation size ?I am confused, Does it have anything to do with "blksize=4096". ?Should I try and mount my hard drive with a larger blksize ?I did some research on google but couldn't find an option to increase the blksize when mounting an NTFS pre-formatted drive

Both windows and ubuntu load fine through GRUB2 etc
I had installed WUBI before on the SATA drive and then i uninstalled it.
problem is that when i log in to Ubuntu i see on fdisk
But i cannot access the SATA drive /dev/sda i tried mounting the drive but i get an error saying this is mounted as /dev/sdb5
How do i mount the SATA drive to get access to the drive ? i messed around with this drive when i was using WUBI. i.e. tried to mount it to recover grub but never got it working. Now somehow it seems that this old mounted drive is messing with my current Ubuntu install.

"TheDrive" mounts to /media/TheDrive. Everything is fine. But, I would like to automatically mount the drive in my file tree at the location /mnt/TheDrive. I would not like to have the drive automatically mounted to /media/ and appear on the desktop. I know that this requires the use of fstab; but, I do not know what to add to this file.

The directory mounts successfully if I am already logged into the laptop with another account first but if I log on initially with the user who requires the mount the mount fails. The partition is mounted and I can read/write.
However, for the other user the partition is not showing up. What to do?
I've tried changing the permissions from nautilus, but no success.
I can no longer access my external USB hard drive after applying routine updates this morning. It is a WD "My Passport" drive, 500 GB with the standard formatting setup. As far as I can tell there are no errors on it. Upon plugging it in I see a pop-up box "Unable to mount the volume 'My Passport'" and it provides no further information under "Details." If I try mounting from the command line, e.g. mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 or similar, no errors appear but when I do ls on the directory it comes up blank. Also then if I try to unmount it, it tells me the drive isn't mounted. This drive mounts fine on another computer running Fedora (and all the data on it is readable). I'm guessing there is a bug in one of the updates--here is what updates I applied.
