OpenSUSE Network :: Complete Freeze When Downloading Torrents?

Apr 16, 2011

I'm experiencing complete system freezes when dowloading torrents with more than 800kb/sec (I think this is the limit, I've capped it at 750, and it seems to be running ok now). I had this same problem in Ubuntu aswell. But not in Win 7. The problem also appeared in ubuntu when streaming video through VLC with more than 800kbps.

As my connection gives me quite alot higher download speeds this kind of annoys me, and me being quite new to this whole Linux thing, don't really know what to do. I had a dialogue with someone at Ubuntuforums regarding this, but we pretty much got nowhere.

I have an ASUS 1201N laptop, with ION chipset.

Ubuntu :: Complete System Freezes When Using Torrents?

May 21, 2011

Beginning on the release day for Firefox 4, my system has been encountering hard freezes (no responsiveness to any key entry and only way to restart is by hitting the reset button). I had installed firefox 4 with no issue, but once it was open, it kept freezing my system. Some addons weren't supported anyways, so I uninstalled it and got back my 3.6. At the time I was using rtorrent, but within minutes of using it since the firefox install, my entire system freezes up.

Naturally I suspect HDD or RAM, but both have been extensively tested. Next I began browsing forums and found some tricks like turning off IPv6 or changing settings via HDPARM, but none have made any difference. I have moved on to using Transmission, and the problem still exists, but it occurs much less frequently.

I have also since then noticed that transfers of files from my 500GB OS/Torrent drive to my RAID 5 array and vice versa moves at 2-4MBytes/s, much too slow. So next I set up my torrent client to download directly to my RAID array, and lo and behold no freezes! Also, while transfering data the system moves at an absolute CRAWL, as in browser windows turning gray, saying that they have stopped responding, etc. I ran a fsck on my 500GB drive, which instantly told me my file system was clean. I'm at my whit's end here! I hate re-posting on a topic, but I feel like I've tried everything!

System Info:
Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit
Kernel 2.6.32-29-generic-pae
AMD Athlon 4450e
1GB RAM, 2.5GB Swap
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Load Websites When Torrents Are Downloading

Nov 28, 2010

This is sorta a strange problem as it also happened in Windows Vista as well, one of the reasons I tried out Linux was to fix this problem (then fell in love with it and didn't go back).

Anyway, problem is that when ever I start downloading a torrent, no matter what speed the file is downloading at - fast or slow, as soon as I open a browser and then load a website it's like my internet connection has died. "Chrome was unable to find the website" "Firefox could not load this site" ect ect.

The torrents will still keep downloading/uploading, instant messages programs still work, but websites will not load.

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable Cripple The Network When Downloading?

Feb 22, 2010

I am running OpenSuse 11.2 on my desktop here in the office and when I download anything, other users are complaining over very slow internet speeds. My download speed seems to be the same as other users using Windows, but downloading from a windows machine does not cripple the network. So is there something in my network setup that can be tweaked so that I do not cripple the network when downloading ?

General :: Tar Is Causing A Complete Freeze?

Jun 13, 2010

I have a very simple bash script that just runs a series of backups using tar; for example, one of the lines reads:tar -czvpf /srv/backups/backup_home.tar.gz /homeThis script is scheduled to run every Friday, but occasionally I will schedule it to run before using 'at'. The script is located on the same disk as the backups are saved, I then transfer them off the machine manually (I've yet to automate this). I am only compressing files that are located on the server's disk, no files are being transferred over the network at all.

The problem is, occasionally it appears to be causing the 'server' I have running all the time to completely freeze. When this happens the machine does not power down and there are no entries in the log that indicate a problem. Everything simply stops until I press the reset button. Note that this issue also happens when you run the script manually and not just when it is run via cron or at.I *think* this might be happening when a large file is being compressed, but I'm not certain.

Debian :: Complete System Freeze During Shutdown?

Apr 1, 2010

When I try to shut my PC down (press the shutdown button in KDE 4.3.4), the desktop quits, but the console screen does not appear (the CTRL+ALT+F1 screen). Well, technically speaking it appears but only a still (not blinking) cursor is shown, otherwise the whole screen is blank. This means that not only the X freezes but whole system, because the keyboard is unresponsive too. It happend multiple times now, and every time I reboot after such event, some kde rc files (amarokrc, kmailrc, etc...) get deleted due to the automated filesystem check (unclean umount), which means that I have to reconfigure these apps again.

My home partition is on a separate EXT2 partition (this way I have full r/w access from winxp) and every time this is the only one which gets corrupted. The system partition (which is EXT3) is always intact (no fsck starts on boot). I'm using Debian Squeeze by the way.

OpenSUSE Network :: NTP And Downloading

Aug 2, 2011

On my 11.3 KDE if I leave the computer alone to download something and come back to check after a while I sometimes find that torrents or usenet downloads have been stopped long ago and kdeapplet displays the wrong time, anything from half and hour to ten hours late. I usually open NTP configuration screen, check if server is accessible and okay out of it and everything goes back to normal by itself, time is corrected and downloads resumed. What could be the reason for stopping downloads and how can I correct this problem? Is NTP the cause or just another symptom of a deeper problem? NTP is set to "now and on boot", interval is set to 5 min - I think those are all default settings.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Causes Complete System Freeze; Ctrl+Alt+Fx Doesn't Respond?

May 29, 2011

All of these freezes happen either while I'm in Nautilus or I'm opening Nautilus. The usual Ctrl+Alt+Fx (x being one to six) to get into the backstage does not work. If I have some music open then it would start looping the last couple of seconds. Now generally I would go check the logs, but I see no nautilus logs so what should I check? This is all pretty recent. I think that this started to happen when one day exim4 (and some packages all marked exim) got updated but I cannot be certain. Major playing-around after that would be some Wine issues but the system froze once before all that Wine fun.So step one, what should I check?

EDIT: OK, .xsession-errors ouput:
Code:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

I have host server for xen (11.2 x86_64) and another server holding linux images. Those images are accesible via NFS.

When I am installing new machine on my xen host and using images on nfs share; whole host-machine freeze during installation (random time, random packages, but it freeze everytime). I had to hard rebooted. Machine do not respond to ping. Performing same installaltion from local copy of same image (copy is done through NFS !) is always vithout any problem.

Xen host machine is MSI Wind and it have gb ethernet. I had some problem with it on Windows XP (disconecting) but on Windows Vista it was ok. On Linux I also did not encounter any problem so far.

Strange thing is that after hang there is no error in /var/log/messages. I would like to investigate what`s going on, what cause this freeze.

I am thing about sysrq messages, but this machine do not have any com port.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Network Management Disabled After Freeze?

Aug 18, 2010

I just switched to opensuse from fedora. So far, I like it a lot (KDE FTW). However, I am having a couple issues concerning hibernation and restarting.Whenever I merely close my computer but don't shut it off, I am forced to reboot. When I open the computer after closing it, everything stays black and nothing seems to work aside from a restart (no good, I know). When I restart, network management is disabled and thus I am prevented from accessing wireless. The only solution I have found is to hibernate, which for some reason fixes the problem. A restart however does nothing. So I guess I have two questions:1) Why can't I close my computer without turning it off?2) Is there a more permanent solution aside from merely hibernating after a crash that will fix network manager

Ubuntu Networking :: Rtorrent Killing Network Whether Downloading Or Not

Jul 8, 2011

I use Ubuntu 10.04 server as a base for my media center, with rtorrent as my download program. I've had to move into a smaller place where I don't have direct control over the network, and where we have a vanishingly poor DSL connection. When I start up rtorrent, every computer on the network starts having dramatic slowdowns of internet speed, even when both my downloads and uploads are throttled to 1KBps, which is as low as rtorrent will go. Unfortunately, as I said, I don't have direct access to the router. The IT guy says my media center "is sending requests to all the computers on the network like crazy". How he knows that, I don't know, nor do I know exactly what he means.

But it is only when I have rtorrent running, even when it's only running 1k each way. It was my intention to test whether or not running utorrent on my Windows box had the same effect, but it's telling me "an attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions" on all trackers, which I've also been unable to resolve. It may or may not be symptomatic of the same issue, but the UI of rtorrent is painfully slow. As in, I push the down arrow, go make myself a sandwich and watch some telly, and maybe when I'm done it's selected the next torrent. I used to use Transmission, but it used more resources and interfered with watching shows.

Networking :: Gigabit Switch Causing Network To Freeze?

Dec 30, 2010

We have an old Zonet 10/100 switch in our home network that locks up whenever there's a power glitch longer than about a microsecond. (OK. It's not that bad but if the lights flicker, I usually end up going down to the basement to see if the switch is hung.) None of the computers or peripherals are affected by the glitches, BTW. Power-cycle the switch and everything starts working again. After putting up with this for months I finally picked up a Netgear 8-port 10/100/1000 switch to replace the Zonet. Unfortunately, when the Netgear switch is in the network, everything slows to a crawl before completely freezing up. Pinging other systems barely worksname would not work.Pinging another system by its IP address worked a little but packet losses of 70%-80% were the best I saw. At first. Then it gets to where the loss is 100%.

All systems were rebooted after the Netgear switch was inserted into the network. The systems that were capable of gigabit connections autosensed the new switch and set their port speed accordingly. And that's about all that works when the Netgear switch is present. (The Zonet is back in the network now.)One thing I have not tried is forcing the port speed on the gigabit-capable systems to 100Mb and re-inserting the Netgear switch into the network to see if the problem if due to running some of the ports at 1000Mb.The systems on the network are running various versions of Linux (with different kernel versions, of course). Most are due for upgrades to get them current but I was planning on hitting the systems that had gigabit-capable ethernet interfaces thinking that a.) 100Mb speeds have been around forever and no problems have been seen when everything was running at 100Mb in the past and b.) the gigabit support for the older kernels should be better (one system only supports an MTA of 1500 max at 1000Mb).
