since upgrade to suse 11.3 every time I reboot pc the file /etc/hosts is reset to default value. I am a web developer so I need to put in there my aliases for 127.0.0.1. It is annoying to do it again and again. Luckily, I don't restart my system very often but still I would like to avoid that.What should I do to stop this resetting? Or is there another place in 11.3 where should I put my entries?
View 9 RepliesI am trying to install OpenSuse 11.3 x64 via EFI. I successfully performed a Windows 7 install and I'm trying to do the same thing with OpenSuse now. My system boots into the EFI shell. I can cd into the /efi/boot/ folder and run bootx64.efi. Immediately after I press enter I am presented with an ELILO boot: prompt which either eventually times out and continues or I can press enter and have it continue. Either way my system resets and just boots back to the EFI shell again.
Running bootx64.efi worked for starting the Windows 7 setup but it doesn't appear to be working with OpenSuse. Is this a broken feature or am I doing something wrong?
I just installed open Suse 11.3, and I cannot SSH my school. Upon further investigation I could not even ping any machines outside my local area network. Ironically I could nmap machines outside my local area network.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I converted to OpenSUSE 11.2, and went through YaST HTTP Server Configuration, creating my virtual hosts under the Hosts tab, YaST combinedm all int ile,"/etc/apache2/vhosts.d/ip-based_vhosts.conf".I did google and read, [URL]for further assistance.I'd like each virtual host to have its own file under vhosts.d, and wondering why YaST did not do that.The file /etc/apache2/httpd.conf laid out the file structure, and all vhosts.d/*.conf files are included.Is there a way to tell YaST to create separate files for each vhost, or does the user have to manually do it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI run a dedicated opensuse 11.1 server with apache (2.2.10-2.9.1) installed. This box has been running for nearly 2 years hosting several low traffic websites. I must admit that I did not give lots of love/attention to the machine over that period. It ran rock solid. The different websites each have their own associated user account and are stored in their own /home/name/public_html/ folder. It was setup through Webmin. Each domain name is also linked to a unique IP (the box has multiple available IPs), however this is configured at my domain provider. All in all a very simple and straightforward setup that never let me down most of the past decade.
Recently the sites on the machine were no longer responding. This happens each other year or so since I write my logfiles to a separate partition. Was df -h and indeed, partition was full. Removed logfiles manually, and while I was at it I decided it was time to run an online update (yast2 / online update that is). Rebooted machine after yast telling me to do so. Sites are no longer working. Can no longer login to webmin. Only thing what works is the 'root' webpage (/srv/www/htdocs folder), which makes me rather clueless as the other sites are just not responding at all, not even a timeout or error message.While I know that deleting logfiles manually is quite stupid, I've done it fore and not really ended up in trouble.
Hence my questions: does this sound familiar to anyone and do you mind to give me a clue about where exactly I should start to look. It's been ages since I actually administrated apache, so I might overlook the obvious. Long story short: any tips are very welcome about what I should check first, what config files might have been changedith the update, etc ...

What is this error and how can i fix it,because every time im re booting my server i lost my network config.
Can I add memory to the Linux box without rebooting the system? I think Linux check the hardware at booting time. But if I need to add more memory to the server while I do not want to stop the service. Is there some method to make Linux use the new added memories?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI done searches for "clock" and found similar threads, but no real fix that is working for me. My clock resets when I boot into linux. It does not happen in windows or bios even on cold boots. The battery is replaced and good** the old battery was by all measures dead (0.6v), but still seemed to have enough power for the clock, since windows tested fine with it.
I have tryed setting it to local time, UTC.. etc... My timezone is GMT (london). "sudo /sbin/hwclock --systohc" Although I have windows, I do not use it except the few times to test this, so no conflict.
Every time I reboot, my screen resolution goes back to 800x600. Is there a way to permanently set it to what I want?
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 using KDE.
I have a Geforce GTX 460 GPU and I recently switched from Ubuntu to Suse 11 and I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers (the same as I had on Ubuntu) In Ubuntu I had configured the xserver to display my desktop on my LCD monitor and my LED TV as clones and everything worked fine When I change the settings in Suse everything works fine until I restart the Xserver. All my settings disappear and everything is back to the standard settings again. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I have root privileges or not, and I have tried saving to etc/X11/xorg.conf., etc/X11/xorg.conf.install, etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup but each time I reboot everything is back to the default settings again. In Ubuntu I just saved the new settings to etc/X11/xorg.conf. and restarted the Xserver and all was fine.
Here is a copy of what I saved to the X config file:

I am running Debian Squeeze on an Intel DH55TC motherboard. When I issue a shutdown command
shutdown -h now
The system goes shutting down. Eveything looks fine, and the main console shows all process being stopped. In the end it says "System will now halt". Then a few seconds later, it restarts. It is unclear what is causing this, because nothing is written to the screen. It just goes blank and starts rebooting. Looking afterwards in syslog doesn't show anything also.
Why rebooting is not required in linux after installing an application even if related important files are running?

On one of them it reboots quite finely but I am having following problem with rebooting Debian on my second computer.When i type reboot at the linux prompt, following messages appear and system hangs up after saying "Restarting System":
The difference that I noted between my two computers is that I don't have ACPI support in the BIOS of the system which is giving me this error whereas the BIOS of my first computer do have ACPI support on which Debain do not give this Restart hanging problem.I have also disabled running the acpid script by running Code: update-rc.d -f acpid remove.
I have NFS fileserver that has served me well for more than year. But recently I noticed that it has started to reboot on its own very frequently, almost once a day! It is most likely not a power related issue as I tried changing UPS/power sources, but no help!So my question is:Is there any log file where I can check which is causing the reboot? There may not be a single logfile, but I need some point to start the investigation!

I left the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installation cd I burned in the drive and rebooted the remote machine. Now I cant get it on VNC or ping it by name. But the IP it had before still replies to pings. When I check the DHCP database in Windows Server 2003, that IP's machine name is now "ubuntu", not the same as before. Does this sound like what a machine would do when that cd is left in the drive on a reboot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Banshee 1.6.0 under OpenSUSE 11.2. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and whenever Banshee ends one show and switches to another, it resets the sound volume from the value it was set at during the previous podcast.
I couldn't locate anything in the Sound preferences, and Banshee doesn't seem to have anything specific about making the playback sound sync with the system volume.
when I was entering a sed command, with a back-reference to the scnd set of parenthesis. 2 reset X, or so I though ... I did some experimenting, and lo and behold, I could reproduce the behaviour even on the xdm login screen, when I typed in my sed expression as the name. Not every time, not accurately, but maybe 3 out of 10 times I can reset X by pressing 2 on the numeric row in a quick succession with other keys, and the I at first thought was required to trigger the behavior is not necessary at all. Nothing in the X-log, nothing in ~/.xsession-errors.
I'm annoyed, and as X is quite sizable and spawns a truckload of processes I'm highly reluctant to try and reproduce the behaviour under the control of strace (mind you, since it seems to be "speed" related it maybe wouldn't even occur under strace ;}). I'm running Slack64 13.0 on a Thinkpad R500 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset, can't think of anything else that might be special with this hardware in regards to X.
I have noticed that ubuntu 9.10 (but also other distro and in general those that configure the network automatically at startup) crashed if my pc boot directly with a linux kernel at power on.This does not happen if the first boot is done with windows xp and then rebooting the pc and choosing the same linux kernel.Some distro (for example SysrescueCD) that does not configure the network at startup can work but also with these if I try to configure the network using the command ifconfig eth0 the system crashes.My network card is a SiS191 Ethernet and linux recognized it using sis190 module.I suppose that something happen during the first power on, some inizialization done with windows xp but does not done with linux in fact after a reboot made from windows xp without shutdown the pc, with Linux I can configure the network using ifconfig without crash.
Any ideas to solve this without have to boot always windows as first?
I'm trying to come up with a startup init script that will check to see if the system was shut down gracefully, or if it is rebooting from a poweroff or something similar?Anyone know of a way to check for this condition with the least amount of room for false positives or vice versa?My intial thought is just a startup script that will will check for a file on startup, and on a proper reboot/shutdown just touch the file. But id like to avoid that type of script if possible,
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've read some people having the same problem, but I can't manage to fix it. I got a 1440x900 screen. Every time I reboot my system starts up with 1400x1050 , I have to go to System settings to fix it, options don't get saved as one would expect.
Well, I think my problem is cause of nvidia drivers, so I go to nvidia settings to get this fixed. But, these settings are all fine, it says 1440x900. When I try pressing Save to X (to make sure it gets saved), i get a failed to parse message (Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!). I've got driver version 256.53
Oh well, screw this, I'll do it manually, so I go to the xorg.conf file. But over here everything says 1440x900. How come my resolution keeps changing each time I reboot?
Every time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?

Now let's say I've set the affinity to each of the network interfaces, so that it balances one per processor, so we have 5 processors working only for the network interfaces each processor with it's own eth. Now let's assume that the network interfaces generate very few interrupts, and that they show up every 5-6 seconds, so watching cat /proc/interrupts doesn't exactly underline the modifications unless you look with a ruler. Is there a way to reset the counters on /proc/interrupts so that they all start at 0, without rebooting the system?
I have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2
