Feb 12, 2011I have Windows XP on one drive "C" drive, Windows 7 on another "E" drive and want to install Ubuntu on another drive "G" drive. How do I when installing Ubuntu select the "G" drive to install to?
Then how to select the operating system required from a cold boot?

Feb 11, 2010I have noticed that ubuntu 9.10 (but also other distro and in general those that configure the network automatically at startup) crashed if my pc boot directly with a linux kernel at power on.This does not happen if the first boot is done with windows xp and then rebooting the pc and choosing the same linux kernel.Some distro (for example SysrescueCD) that does not configure the network at startup can work but also with these if I try to configure the network using the command ifconfig eth0 the system crashes.My network card is a SiS191 Ethernet and linux recognized it using sis190 module.I suppose that something happen during the first power on, some inizialization done with windows xp but does not done with linux in fact after a reboot made from windows xp without shutdown the pc, with Linux I can configure the network using ifconfig without crash.
Any ideas to solve this without have to boot always windows as first?

Aug 17, 2011I am running Debian Squeeze on an Intel DH55TC motherboard. When I issue a shutdown command
shutdown -h now
The system goes shutting down. Eveything looks fine, and the main console shows all process being stopped. In the end it says "System will now halt". Then a few seconds later, it restarts. It is unclear what is causing this, because nothing is written to the screen. It just goes blank and starts rebooting. Looking afterwards in syslog doesn't show anything also.

On one of them it reboots quite finely but I am having following problem with rebooting Debian on my second computer.When i type reboot at the linux prompt, following messages appear and system hangs up after saying "Restarting System":
The difference that I noted between my two computers is that I don't have ACPI support in the BIOS of the system which is giving me this error whereas the BIOS of my first computer do have ACPI support on which Debain do not give this Restart hanging problem.I have also disabled running the acpid script by running Code: update-rc.d -f acpid remove.

Nov 4, 2010I have NFS fileserver that has served me well for more than year. But recently I noticed that it has started to reboot on its own very frequently, almost once a day! It is most likely not a power related issue as I tried changing UPS/power sources, but no help!So my question is:Is there any log file where I can check which is causing the reboot? There may not be a single logfile, but I need some point to start the investigation!

Nov 14, 2010since upgrade to suse 11.3 every time I reboot pc the file /etc/hosts is reset to default value. I am a web developer so I need to put in there my aliases for 127.0.0.1. It is annoying to do it again and again. Luckily, I don't restart my system very often but still I would like to avoid that.What should I do to stop this resetting? Or is there another place in 11.3 where should I put my entries?

Now let's say I've set the affinity to each of the network interfaces, so that it balances one per processor, so we have 5 processors working only for the network interfaces each processor with it's own eth. Now let's assume that the network interfaces generate very few interrupts, and that they show up every 5-6 seconds, so watching cat /proc/interrupts doesn't exactly underline the modifications unless you look with a ruler. Is there a way to reset the counters on /proc/interrupts so that they all start at 0, without rebooting the system?

Jun 23, 2010My server is not accessible any longer locally (192.168.0.2). If I attach a keyboard and login (I have done one pass of recovery from the Ubuntu live CD which helped) and check the IP address it seems to be set. However looking at the syslog file there is a line which says ext3-fs: info: recovery required on read only files system.
Is there a more extensive ext3 recovery facility I can use bearing in mind I will not (?) be able to install it?
I think I'm running 8.6 but not sure where to look to find it.

Jan 4, 2010I installed the minimal-command line system from the kubuntu CD on my laptop, which is guess is roughly around 200mb after installation. I wish to install a Desktop Environment preferably KDE and I wanted to know how and where do I begin from? Do I need to have a working XORG prior to installation of KDE and do I also need to install Window mangers and e.t.c? What all packages/libraries and components do I need to install first? I'm really not sure where should I begin from.
Initially what I am trying to do is to have working GUI system,then later on I can install rest of the packages and software that I need, like office, GPU drivers, browser etc. Secondly,for a minimal KDE system,what metapackages are to be installed from this site? I believe kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace are required. [URL]
Ubuntu Installation :: Freezing / Rebooting When In Graphical Mode?
Jan 29, 2010I want to switch to Ubuntu 9.10 but the computer always freezes 30 to 45 seconds after entering the graphical mode. This includes the 64bit installer, the 64bit live CD version and I even installed the 32bit version with the alternate install CD (text-mode). In all 3, I can use the system (e.g. log in, click Next) just fine for half a minute, then it crashes. It even crashes if I don't do anything.
Here are my hardware specs:
MB: Biostar TF560 A2+
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+
RAM: DDR2 800 Dual 128 bit, 2T (4GB)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 3870
The sound and network cards are integrated but I've tried disabling them from BIOS as well as removing all hard drives and the problem persists. I have also verified the CD successfully. Note that right now I'm using SLAX from a CD as I formatted my hard drive (so at least some Linux works).

Jan 29, 2011I am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:
7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.
So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:
/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.
not knowing any better, my first time through I just picked "/" and that is what got me to the message "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" So what should I be specifying at this point?

Jun 2, 2011I have downloaded the latest iso from the Fedora site (15 32-bit). I am using a netbook and so I have used the tool suggested on the site to copy the iso to my usb drive. Before this I formatted it to fat32 in Windows and then used the tool. When I rebooted with my USB drive, all that shows is a blinking _. I tried repeating the process again but the same happened.
