As i read in google that if we Ctrl+Alt+Del in linux box system get rebooted i tried in my PC its not rebooting.
even though i un commented the line in /etc/inittab

Can't get into terminal mode by pressing any hotkey CRTL+ALT+F1 .... F6.Displays seems to freeze, a blank screen is shown whit some bright spread pixels at the top. Although I can return to graphical mode by pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 without problems.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 3 layouts: USA, Russian and Hebrew. In Hebrew the W key is mapped to apostrophe, so Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout doesn't close tabs in Firefox. There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a file server running Ubuntu 9.04, with 2 1Tb Drives. I did a normal shutdown, and when I attempted to start the server again, it returns an error of Drive error. Then I must press F1 to resume. If I disconnect the 2nd Hard disk it will boot normally after pressing F1. If I leave the Disk connected it just hangs up after pressing F1. I can run it with 1 disk, but I cannot run it headless if I have to press F1 to start it every time.

shutdown -h now
The system goes shutting down. Eveything looks fine, and the main console shows all process being stopped. In the end it says "System will now halt". Then a few seconds later, it restarts. It is unclear what is causing this, because nothing is written to the screen. It just goes blank and starts rebooting. Looking afterwards in syslog doesn't show anything also.
Why rebooting is not required in linux after installing an application even if related important files are running?

On one of them it reboots quite finely but I am having following problem with rebooting Debian on my second computer.When i type reboot at the linux prompt, following messages appear and system hangs up after saying "Restarting System":
The difference that I noted between my two computers is that I don't have ACPI support in the BIOS of the system which is giving me this error whereas the BIOS of my first computer do have ACPI support on which Debain do not give this Restart hanging problem.I have also disabled running the acpid script by running Code: update-rc.d -f acpid remove.
I have NFS fileserver that has served me well for more than year. But recently I noticed that it has started to reboot on its own very frequently, almost once a day! It is most likely not a power related issue as I tried changing UPS/power sources, but no help!So my question is:Is there any log file where I can check which is causing the reboot? There may not be a single logfile, but I need some point to start the investigation!
View 3 Replies View Relatedsince upgrade to suse 11.3 every time I reboot pc the file /etc/hosts is reset to default value. I am a web developer so I need to put in there my aliases for 127.0.0.1. It is annoying to do it again and again. Luckily, I don't restart my system very often but still I would like to avoid that.What should I do to stop this resetting? Or is there another place in 11.3 where should I put my entries?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that ubuntu 9.10 (but also other distro and in general those that configure the network automatically at startup) crashed if my pc boot directly with a linux kernel at power on.This does not happen if the first boot is done with windows xp and then rebooting the pc and choosing the same linux kernel.Some distro (for example SysrescueCD) that does not configure the network at startup can work but also with these if I try to configure the network using the command ifconfig eth0 the system crashes.My network card is a SiS191 Ethernet and linux recognized it using sis190 module.I suppose that something happen during the first power on, some inizialization done with windows xp but does not done with linux in fact after a reboot made from windows xp without shutdown the pc, with Linux I can configure the network using ifconfig without crash.
Any ideas to solve this without have to boot always windows as first?
I'm trying to come up with a startup init script that will check to see if the system was shut down gracefully, or if it is rebooting from a poweroff or something similar?Anyone know of a way to check for this condition with the least amount of room for false positives or vice versa?My intial thought is just a startup script that will will check for a file on startup, and on a proper reboot/shutdown just touch the file. But id like to avoid that type of script if possible,

Now let's say I've set the affinity to each of the network interfaces, so that it balances one per processor, so we have 5 processors working only for the network interfaces each processor with it's own eth. Now let's assume that the network interfaces generate very few interrupts, and that they show up every 5-6 seconds, so watching cat /proc/interrupts doesn't exactly underline the modifications unless you look with a ruler. Is there a way to reset the counters on /proc/interrupts so that they all start at 0, without rebooting the system?

View 2 Replies View RelatedEver since I made the switch to Ubuntu I have had a problem getting back to the X Windows environment from Virtual Terminals. Control+Alt+F1~6 work fine but when I try Control+Alt+F7 my screen freezes.
I have been trying to find a solution to this problem but it doesn't seem to be affecting many other users. Not sure if it matters, but I'm running 64-bit Lucid Lynx.
I have been trying to switch to CLI mode for 2 hours now, I have searched possible solutions and I couldn't find any so I decided to make a new topic.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 x86_64. I need to log into CLI to stop KDE from running, but I just can't get there.
When I try ctrl+alt+F1 the only thing happens is that mouse pointer disappears and everything else (background, panels, etc.) stays the same, and frozen, no keyboard input helps.
Then when I perform ctrl+alt+F7 it gets me back into GUI. I have also tried sudo chvt 1, same effect. Then I tried to change inits. sudo init 1 and sudo init 2 give me just a blank black screen and where only reboot helps. init 3 doesn't do anything (guess I'm already running init 3 and thats why).

View 11 Replies View RelatedI am running a 5 node 11g RAC cluster with cluster ready services. The hardware is HP BL460g6 with virtual connect modules on each chassis. The OS is RHEL5.5, 2 Qlogic 4G fibre cards, 2 Broadcom NICs bonded, and the backend disk is all Hitachi 15k. The issue that I'm seeing is periodically each day there are spikes in I/O waits for disk writes, and sometimes that will cause a node or 2 to reboot when CRS can't communicate with the other nodes. Both nodes that have been evicted, are on the same chassis. What I've checked is, the backend storage is not seeing ANY high utilization, in fact it's running at less than 10% all the time. The network is 10G, and is not showing errors on the switch, or on the blades themselves. The redo logs have a 10M buffer cache, and are running on ASM disk. What other information would be beneficial to check? I am seeing nothing in the logs as to any errors, or waits for disk writes. I believe it's a software issue, but am lost as to how to prove it. These aren't the only nodes experiencing periodic high I/O waits, and it happens at the exact same time on all systems, whether they run ASM or are part of a cluster.

I looked in the keyboard short cut and it was not there. i tried to add it and it put it in custom as disabled and I could not enable it.
anyone has a clue why 'ctrl+a, k' nor 'ctrl+a, :kill' doesn't work for killing one of screen windows? Other screen's commands invoked with 'ctrl+a'seem to work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.5 with all the GUI stuff, including nx server and webmin.Sometimes while watching the bootup messages because my eyesight is very poor.I hit <ctrl s> to pause the output so I can read some details. If I do this late in the init sequence - it often briefly stops the output then the screen disappears under a blue wash (presumably something to do with the GUI login screen ot screensaver??)but the login screen never appears. Also it seems that the script never completes because the imap, webmin and http servers don't appear to have started.
I haven't found any satisfactory way out of it. I can't get back to a console terminal (I've tried ctrl c, d, z, etc.). As luck would have it the nx server has started so I can open an nx session. If I open a terminal in an nx session as root.I can't do a normal restart (shutdown -r now). Nothing happens presumably it can't run the init script because it is still running.The only way I have found to get the system back to life is to run "shutdown -r -n now" in the nx terminal session.There are probably better ways out of this predicament that I am unaware of. Otherwise it is probably somewhere between an annoyance and a bug. I would be interested in any advice the centos "board" may have as to whether this is worth raising as a redhat bug.
I have a rented vserver running at Strato [URL]. It came preinstalled with Debian 7. I upgraded it to Debian 8, what seemed to run fine, all services running. The problems came up when I tried to reboot the server to test the init system. It just does not come up, I cannot ping it, nothing. I can boot into the rescue system, mount the system partitions and chroot in to the filesystem. In this state I also can run my services, including apache2 and mysql. In the syslog I find nothing about the reboot. Now I need to reboot ino the normal system. I already tried to resume to sysvinit without success.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWe have a server running CentOS 5 Linux 2.6.18-128.1.16.el5xen #1 SMP Tue Jun 30 06:39:23 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU Linux. We've seen at random times that the server will just reboot and nothing is logged in messages. I tried to enable kdump but was only able to get a 5.4 gig dump since our /var directory is set to 10GB. Here is the messages I see before and after the server restart. I had thought that when a kernel panics, it is supposed to halt the system and not reboot it. My /proc/sys/kernel/panic is set to 0. I can run an update but want to have some sort of idea what is causing the issue and if the update will fix anything.
