OpenSUSE Network :: Name Resolution On Multi-homed Networks Using Dnsmasq?

May 11, 2011

I have a DNS server (dnsmasq v2.55) at the center of three subnets: x.y.1.0/24, x.y.2.0/24 & x.y.3.0/24. dnsmasq does a grand job of issuing a suitable DNS server address with the DHCP option 6. So, machines on subnet x.y.3.0/24 are told that the DNS server is x.y.3.2, machines on subnet x.y.2.0/24 are told that the DNS server is x.y.2.2 and machines on subnet x.y.1.0/24 are told that the DNS server is at x.y.1.2. Even though the DNS server is the same box (although with three nics).

Now the question is:
How do I make dnsmasq respond similarly to name resolution requests? So that when:
Machines from x.y.3.0/24, ping <name of DNS server> dnsmasq returns x.y.3.2,
Machines from x.y.2.0/24, ping <name of DNS server> dnsmasq returns x.y.2.2, and
Machines from x.y.1.0/24, ping <name of DNS server> dnsmasq returns x.y.1.2.

Currently, the DNS server returns the IP address that is assigned in /etc/host. Which, of course can be changed, but via that mechanism, will always be wrong two out of three cases.

OpenSUSE Network :: No DNS Caching Until Manually Restart Dnsmasq?

May 29, 2010

My upstream DNS server is a bit slow, so I've installed the dnsmasq cacher locally. I have the service starting on runlevels 2, 3, and 5. But I can tell by Firefox's behavior that dnsmasq does not work upon boot. Firefox lets its own DNS cache expire after 60 seconds. When I do my second Google search five minutes after my first, the second DNS lookup for www.google.com is just as slow as the first. If I manually restart the dnsmasq service, I get the fast name resolutions I expect.

Debian :: Using VNC In A Multi-user / Multi-system Network

Mar 21, 2011

Anyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.

I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.

OpenSUSE Network :: Using Server For Load Balancing Multi Internet?

Jan 5, 2010

I have OpenSuse 11.1 installed in a system as server (without graphics). We have 3 NICs, 2 of them connected to 2 different ISPs through gateways, as follows:

IPs for NICs: IP1=192.168.5.2/24; IP2=192.168.6.2/24 dev=eth2
Gateways: GW1=192.168.5.10; GW2=192.168.6.10 dev=eth3
Third NIC connected into the internal network with and IP=192.168.11.2/24 dev=eth0

We added ip routes and rules as follows (used tables created with vim in the rt_table file with numbers 20 & 30):

ip route add NET1 dev DEV1 src IP1 table TB1
ip route add default via GW1 table TB1
ip route add NET2 dev DEV2 src IP2 table TB2

[code]....

ip route add default scope global nexthop via GW1 dev DEV1 weight WG1 nexthop via GW2 dev DEV2 weight WG2 from the server I could ping Yahoo! and ping any PC connected in the internal network (192.168.11.xxx). Fro PCs I could ping all the IPs of the server but not the GWs neither any web site, I couldn't surf either.

Debian :: Setup Dnsmasq On A Network That Already Has A Router?

Feb 17, 2010

I am trying to get more control of my small office network. It consists of several windows workstations, a debian box, and a ZyXEL P-660HW-D1 router, Right now, the only way to reach the debian box from other computers is to type in its ip address.

The goal is to be able to reach the box by just typing ://debianBox into my browser, though ideally I want to set it up to be something like ://debianBox.officenet, and to also reach other people's computers by typing ://mattBox.officenet and ://fredBox.officenet

The Zyxel router has a LAN page with a DHCP Setup tab with fields setup like so In the past I was able to mange this using an Orange router, but now I have to use the ZyXel.

So I installed dnsmasq on the debianBox, but I do not know how to configure it to get the results. I want and still get internet fromthe Zyxel router.

In the etc/hosts file of the debian box I added 192.168.69.15 debianBox, and for testing on my windows machine I set the primary dns entry of the Ip4 connection to 192.168.69.15 as well, but typing ://debianBox in my browser still gives me not found.

But i have noticed that if i do ipconfig /all on my windows clients, instead of the dnsmasq server ip showing, i still see the dns ip of my upstream provider. by this, iam assuming that the client are not using the cache even though the service is running on the server.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Sharing With Network Manager And Dnsmasq?

Jan 1, 2010

how to change the IP range provided by default by Network Manager / dnsmasq from 10.42.43.-- to something else?

I have setup a working network using a Bell wireless modem (Canada) and Network Manager in 8.10, 9.04, and 9.10.to do Internet connection sharing. In 8.10 the only way I could get it to work was with WICD and KPPP, many hours spent on this one. I got it to work in 9.04 and 9.10 using network manager, but certainly not out-of-the-box. If someone would like some tips on how I did it, in each case, let me know.

My current challenge is trying to set the dhcp range of dnsmasq (which I am 99% sure is what is handing out addresses) from th 10.42.43.-- address range to a 192.168.0.-- range.

I HAVE edited /etc/dnsmasq.conf and can get the edits to this file to break the setup (dnsmasq will not start) but have not been able to get it to change the IP address range.

It seems that either this file is ignored, or overridden by some other process. I have looked at the very good post at [URL] about dnsmasq but this does not do the trick.

By the way, the way I can get this to work is to start NM, establish my cellular internet connection, then kill dnsmasq then establish my ICS network (on eth0). If I don't kill dnsmasq, then it does bring up the connection, but it then shuts down in a matter of seconds. It is all very manageable using a launcher (kdesudo pkill dnsmasq) on the task bar, but not all that elegant.

the IP range and where this is provided to Network Manager or the network itself is my real question now.

OpenSUSE Network :: DNS Resolution Fails After Crash?

May 20, 2011

My laptop, running OS114, crashed today b/c it ran out of battery. Apparently, apart from the partial loss of an important document, this has wreaked some part of OS.

I can connect to the network w/o problems i.e. I can access the router over it's IP.

I can not, however, open any site in any browser. pinging them does not work too.

the /etc/resolv.conf is blank up to the standard notes from the OS developers. That is, there are no relevant entries there.

I'm using KDE 4.5 with KNetworkmanager, but neither did I find any solution while looking through the menus of KNetworkmanager, nor in Yast "Network".

OpenSUSE Network :: 10.3 To 11.1 Upgrade Breaks GID Resolution In Samba?

Feb 8, 2010

I've just upgraded my main file server from 10.3 to 11.1 by DVD (I did *not* have a chance to do a zypper up after, so it's the base 11.1 install), and in upgrading my Samba from 3.0.23b to 3.2.4, I seem to have broken winbind resolution of group names. wbinfo -g shows all the right group name entries, and getent group shows that they map to the proper GID numbers... it's just that ls isn't seeing them: I get domain usernames, but the group column is 5 digit numeric GIDs in my defined range. I infer that something broke PAM, but I'm not enough of a PAM jockey to know what. I don't have a pam.d/winbind, but I'm not clear that I'm supposed to. I see that the four pam.d/common-* files were touched, but their contents are the same as the older ones I have.

Ubuntu :: Multi-user Network Manager Applet Icon Not Showing

May 11, 2010

My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.

A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.

Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.

Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

Ubuntu :: Multi Users Accessing A Remote Server On Local Network

Jul 24, 2010

I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.

I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.

Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.

The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.

Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?

2) Store backups of large photoshop files and other graphicsy type stuff from my wifes macpro.
3) Act as a shared directory for all of us

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Tries To Connect To Out-of-range Networks

Jul 2, 2010

I have a problem with network manager. I use Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Latitude D530. I used to have the same problem with Ubuntu 9.10 before I upgraded. I typically connect to two wireless networks: HOME and WORK. Both networks are set to automatic connection mode. I am at work, I connect to the network WORK. At the end of the day, I just close the lid and go home. At home, I open the lid and have the following problem: network manager still displays the network WORK whereas it is clearly out-of-range and it automatically tries to connect to it. It does so until network manager asks if the password is correct.

If I want to connect to HOME, I have to tell network manager to do so. Then, I receive a notification that I am disconnected to WORK. Next morning, I go to work, and I have the same problem, network manager tries to automatically connect to HOME. What I would expect from network manager: when I am at home, NM automatically connects to HOME and does not display WORK, when I am at work, NM automatically connects to WORK and does not display HOME.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Tether Or Ad-hoc Networks Causes Headaches With Other Networks?

Apr 16, 2011

I am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.

What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.

I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.
