I have 4 computers in my house, all with different OS's. (XP, Vista, 7, and Ubuntu) They would all be on Linux but haven't found a way to get my wife to stop using Windows. Anyways, I'd like to set up a home network to connect all 4 computers that would provide filesharing and print server. Does anybody know if this is even possible?

But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
I've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal:
1.) Learn about network setups on Linux
2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network
3.) Configure my (virtual) network
There are lots of OSs and Linux dists to install on your netbook, and I want to make it as easy as possible to install, remove and switch between them.
Just installing a dist and then another one after it will replace the GRUB boot screen every time, and some dists might override previous GRUB menus entirely.
On a previous machine I created a GRUB partition which chain-loads GRUB for each dist, but now I can't remember how I did it.
The hard drive is currently empty, since I started playing around with repartitioning. What is the easiest way to install GRUB to a partition? Links are welcome, but please no generic "install GRUB" guides because the ones I've found haven't been relevant to my particular situation (empty hard drive, multi boot environment, no CD/floppy)..
A friend of mine is starting a school this school has computers. I'm assuming windows but that's not that point at the moment. He asked me about setting a main unit that held the kids info and their work complete on the computer. Effectivley what I am asking is how do I set up a server to allow many multiple (at least 50 user at a time) each with their own folder as their home (or desktop I guess is a better word). He also wants a person to be able to add themselves as an account similar to that of signing up for something (ie facebook twitter you know). Oh and ( I almost forgot the most important) how to setup the server to allow the other computer to boot to it via the network...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying Ubuntu for the first time; it's actually the first time I've messed with Linux at all-- and, well, it's kind of intimidating. One of my hobbies is playing with dead computers, and long story short, I have Ubuntu installed to a partition on an external drive connected to an older Dell desktop with no internal storage to call its own. The only network adapter I have to spare right now is the rather wimpy USB one that came with said desktop. I have the CD with the drivers to it, but I think the Linux drivers on it are for a different distribution. Am I going to need to scrounge up another network card or adapter, or am I going to have to start sheepishly asking ridiculous questions regarding basic operation of the command console?

My LG E500 laptop to function as a modem with a connection to the internet with a 3g usb modem.
There are built-in wireless LG E500.
My other laptop is an old webtech without wireless built in, but I have a wireless USB thing fully with snb5600 Router. Ubuntu can find the wireless USB thing. so it's not a problem.
Both laptops can also connect with the router with cable.
I recently purchased an hp 3050 printer because of it's wireless functionality. I found this (click me) where someone got it working. I tried to follow it step by step, but I couldn't get the ad-hoc network to work reliably.
I used the network manager to locate the printer's ad hoc network (it correctly identified it as ad-hoc) I then edited this connection, made it a "Link-local only" network in the ipv4 tab and then connected.
Usually what happens is that networkmanager claims that it has connected. I get a signal strength and everything, but I can't actually communicate with the printer. I entered the ip address (into firefox) given to me by asking the printer to print it's network settings, and I don't get a response.
Notice that I said "usually". I've tried this many times, and one time, I actually connected to the printer, got the browser interface, tried to use the interface to connect the printer to my wireless router, and failed (then the browser interface didn't work anymore [which of course would make sense if the printer tried to connect to the router, but I don't even know if I got far enough into the process for that to be the problem]). The printer does not show up as a device on my wireless router (my router has a list of all devices that are logged into it), so it failed somehow. I have never been able to duplicate that "success" again in spite of the fact that I've used the printers control panel to reset network defaults.
It seems that the people who were on the questions forum had no problem connecting the ad-hoc network. I kind of suspect that there is something wrong with the printer's wireless device.
PS: I noticed that hp-setup has an option to plug a wireless printer in via USB, set it up then it should work wirelessly, however, I couldn't get that to work with this printer.
I can communicate to Windows perfectly (Internet sharing, file sharing, printer sharing, etc), but Windows controls everything, and I can't access any other Ubuntu PC, or host a printer or Internet connection. I have been fighting Samba for quite a long time, and I finally am able to access Windows shares from Ubuntu, but I want to host the shared folders (and everything else) on Ubuntu instead, because I have a bigger HD on it, and it is just a faster computer.
I tried personal file sharing and shared folders, but it doesn't work. I am also not able to access other Ubuntu PCs in the network, for printing, remote desktop, or file-sharing. All the computer are connected to the same Ethernet router. I'm using XP Home SP3, Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and a laptop running 11.04 beta 2.

Anyway, I'm wanting to set up a home server to save everything on so that I don't have 3-4 copies of one file floating around. I was planning on using Ubuntu because I've always heard that Linux is a good system for a server and that Ubuntu is one of the easiest to work with.
Anyway, I just installed the Ubuntu OS, and the only software that I installed with it was Samba (I don't have a printer hooked up to this computer). Is samba the best software to use for this, or is there any other option that would be easier to use? I've heard that with samba there are a lot of things you have to change using the CLI (something about chmod, whatever that is, and others like it), which doesn't bother me, I've used CLI since the years before Windows, good ol' DOS.
I am trying to set a fix ip address with network manager since my router is not able to set it in order to make port forwarding for aMule.I managed to set the IP address and also de primary/secondary DNS on network manager.My question is: should I set the same DNS on bot the router and network manager?More detail: my router has its own DNS's other than those of OpenDNS. At the moment, I left those DNS's on the router and set up the OpenDNS ones on network manager.Is it correct or should I set the same DNS's on both the router and network manager? In this case, would it be a waste of time since there will be a sort of "double requesting" to the same DNS? When setting up a wireless connection, what is needed for a basic p2p network. Wireless connection from one laptop to another to enable sharing? What I have done was set up a wireless network on my windows machine, connect to it using ubuntu. (this is all done with the built in wireless adapters, no routers). The connection is made, both the windows and ubuntu machines say connected, but none of the computers show up in the networks directory?

The netbook and nettop (desktop) both run UNR 9.10 and my other desktop runs Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates in place. So all 3 machines are hooked up to my home network via wireless router (secure and password protect). I want to set up file shares between machines in order to move files between machines and also to have all machines connected to and accessing one shared printer. Fair enough. According to Ubuntu help I click on a folder, then properties then the share tab and click all checkboxes and give the share a name. Then I do likewise on my two other machines. So in theory once every machine has a share setup then you should be able to access via the other machines by simply going into Network, finding the machine, opening it and mounting the shared folder. In some cases I see the other machines but when I click to open them it says "unable to mount location". So now I would like to ask... where should I look to resolve this? The wireless router settings? Some type of network or security settings on each of my machines?

However when they try to set up my netbook running ubuntu desktop 10.04 they don't get it to prompt for a password, which makes the printer reject the printout. How do you fix this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm living at a friend's right now, and he's got a wireless access point in the house that I set my laptops wlan0 interface to route through the eth0 to my desktop. It's been working fine for internet sharing and internal networking ( ssh and ftp ) between the laptop and the desktop, but there's a problem with both subnets being able to communicate with each other, and I haven't been able to solve it with DNAT either.
The wireless access point is 192.168.0.1 and has its own lan on 192.168.0.0/24 of which my laptop is 192.168.0.5. I setup the little subnet I created by routing with the laptop to 192.168.1.0/24 and my desktop is 192.168.1.50. With shorewall I can configure iptables to DNAT all of my ssh traffic destined to 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.1.50, but the problem seems to occur when ssh on my desktop fails to connect rather than the DNAT failing.
Using iptraf I've seen that all of the routing does work properly, because I can see on the connection in iptraf that only the SYN packet is being sent from a 192.168.0.x address, there is no ACK packet sent back. I believe this is because in the connection dialog it always shows a 192.168.0.x ip as the source of the connection, but I don't have a route to 192.168.0.0/24 from 192.168.1.0/24 setup and I'm unsure of how to do so.
I'm pretty much in over my head because I don't know what is wrong, I thought it should work like this. Everything else from port configurations, to the configurations of the software itself seems fine so I don't think it's anything like that preventing a connection, but I can't think of what it would be aside from the lack of routing between each subnet.
Is there anyway to just add a route so that 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.0.0/24 can communicate with each other directly? I know there should be, I'm just not at all sure how it would be done.
I am a complete noob with computers, especially when Linux is installed.The problem is that when I plug in my wired network cable - it just dont connect. Writes "disconnected".I do not use a modem, just a single cabel.I think the problem is just in my knowledge which numbers where to wirte and which one to tick.May you please write what I should wirte ( IP, MAC or smyh)and shouldnt write mannualy and where. View 7 Replies View RelatedI know there are tons of help guides out there for this, and I have looked at and tried them all. I am trying to do something really simple, and just can't seem to get it working. I have been trying on and off for the better part of a week now, with not much luck. What I am tyring to do is have a Ubuntu 10.10 server serve out DHCP addresses and be the DNS for the local network. The local network will have no internet access, so it only needs to know the names of the local server. My network setup is as follows:
1: Windows Vista web server
2: Ubuntu DHCP3 and BIND server to give IP's and resolve local names.
3: A bunch of tablet computers connected via dhcp to the network, that need to access the web server on the Windows machine.
I have DHCP working nicely, but it fails to propagate the hostnames to the tablet computers. Unfortunately I need this to work, as the tablets do not have the capability of having a 'hosts' file.I have tried just about every self-help guide I can find, and just can't seem to get this work. Everything seems to work fine except for the name resolution. Any help would be great, I don't have that much hair left to pull out!
So I'm wanting to learn a bit more about networking (ok, ALOT more), and I was thinking of trying to setup a virtual network via Virtualbox on my desktop, and as seperated from the internet as humanly possible (preferably no connection whatsoever).
Ignoring a few of the obvious problems (like my little dual core potentially running half a dozen VMs on 2G RAM), I am wanting some guidance as to what programs I would need or some documentation on setting things up.

On all machines i can ping google.com, and yum updates, but I can not ping any other machine. It says they are unreachable. NOt really sure what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.
I would like to know if there is a fairly easy "How To" for setting up my home network. I have 2 XP SP3 computers and 2 Linux with ver. 9.10. The XP boxes can see each other and share files and folders. I can see from an XP box one of the Ubuntu machines, but can't access any of the files or folders.

I'm having issues setting up file sharing between two Linux machines. I've tried the forum cookie cutter answer of "right click folder, sharing options, share, allow others to write and edit, allow guest accounts", but I simply cannot get my two Ubuntu 10.10 machines to see each others shared files. I HAVE been able to download and use the program "Personal File Sharing", and with it I CAN share the "Shared" folder between both machines. I'd prefer to learn the correct way to link these two boxes up though, and be able to share more than 1 directory. Am I missing any programs to complete this link? Do I need to use Samba? I've tinkered with it, and I can get both computers to see a workgroup name I set up, but cannot get them to view each other in it.

I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.
Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.

[URL] I will have both windows and debian machines connected. the first thing is to get my daughters winxp comp connected to the internet since she needs it for school. I need a central server to control which comp accesses what. most of the windows comps will be passing through to the internet while my linux machines will be accessing each other. maybe later a samba share. but right now I only need proxy and dns. I would say doing it with windows was easy but I learned how to do that from posts on this sight and someone might remember them. I will say it is now easy to do windows proxy but I need to replace a active directory domain with something differant. servers is where linux should excel. heres what I get when I type route.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently setting up a vlan network and after reading several man pages I still have 2 questions / problems:
1. I would want to put several subnets into one vlan.Meaning for example, I want to have the following Vlans with subnets:
vlan1 10.1.1.0/24
vlan2 10.1.2.0/24
vlan3 10.1.3.0/24
vlan3 10.1.4.0/24
vlan3 10.1.5.0/24
Is that possible?
EDIT: I found a sample configuration, sadly without any comments, where there are defined some interfaces named vlan1:0 trough vlan1:3. Could that be the option I've been looking for.However in the definition of the vlan1 device it is configured with the subnetmask 255.0.0.0 . I would like to know the mechanics of that option, too.
2. In the wlan part of the network I want to have a dhcp server distributing ip addresses. However I want hosts the server 'knows' (by mac address) to be in a different vlan than those unknown. Is there any way to achieve that? If yes, do I need special wlan access points or can I do it by my configurable switch or by the server?
I haven't done a great deal of networking with Linux so bear with me if the solution seems obvious.I've got four machines with two Ethernet cards each; one on-board and one PCI. I'm trying to get it set up so that the PCI card is eth0, then the on-board eth1. This.. isn't going as easily as I would have thought. I expected I could just go to network configuration, switch to the "Hardware" tab... change the on-board card to be device eth1, change the PCI to be device eth0... then go to the "Devices" tab and change the nickname to match the device.
This has decidedly not worked at all. Additionally, on some of the machines that I haven't messed with, the device name for the PCI card isn't ethn, it's something like "Intelnnnnn" (some string of numbers that I don't have in front of me). Something more specific to the card I'm sure, but while I can assign that device a nickname, I can't use it.. I can ping -I Intelnnnn ip.add.re.ss, but I can't ping -I eth3 ip.add.re.ess.
Where am I going wrong here? I've looked at a few tutorials online but they look extremely more complicated (read_device_bus_id? qeth device?) than should be necessary for just what I'm trying to do
I have 2 workstations that I'm trying to network together so that I can backup each to the other. One is XP sp2 and the other Fedora 9. Since installing Samba on the Fedora box and trying to get it configured, I have a problem that Add/remove programs won't do installs because it says there's no connection to a network. Network Manager says there aren't any connections, but it worked before the Samba install. Mozilla and Thunderbird can access the internet OK. Both workstations are connected by cable to my router and thus to my ISP (DNS server).
Two questions:- where can I find hints on setting up a wired connection (which card's MAC address does it want? router or wrkstn?) and Am I right that Add/remove is stuffed because of Network Manager?I now have Samba working from Linux to XP, but still can't get into Linux from XP. I tried the Linux PC's MAC address and set up a wired connection in Network Manager. NM still thinks there isn't one...
