I have built a kernel with a ramdisk(ramdisk.image.gz) included. Also in the kernel command line I specified root=/dev/ram0. I am trying to use this ramdisk to load a loopback file as the root filesystem off a fat partition. This is /sbin/init from the ramdisk.

On one of my computers that I upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 with a SSD HDD, it no longer umounts any disks on reboot or shutdown, there are no errors shown, it goes from sending TERM and KILL to rebooting.here is my fstab:

I was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy problem is that the wired internet is working on and off, or not even that, only when it wants too. I have googled and googled, which by the way is not loading at all at the moment, and have not found anything. And i really don't know what's wrong. Some more details: 1) Finished installing suse 11.2 with gnome, yesterday. Internet, and google worked fine right off the bat. I have a laptop and so i suspended it to see if everything was working. 2) Bring back the laptop, no internet. I reboot, internet works (google included). 3) I leave the laptop alone, it goes to sleep mode (or what comes after screensaver).
I bring it back, no internet, i reboot, no internet. So i go to windows. 4) Came back to suse, now, and i have internet and google does not load! This is all with wired internet, i haven't had a chance to try the wireless (there isn't a signal for me to try). However, i am positive it won't work with the luck i've been having. Also, a few days ago i had suse with kde and the internet worked continously. I know it can't be related to the GUI, but it's peculiar.
Running OpenSuSE 11.2, KDE 4.3.5 "release 0", kernel 2.6.31.12-13-default.
During shutdown, the messages state:

Fresh install of openSuSE 11.2.
Laserjet 1220 multifunction device.
Successfully installed, network driver also installed, XSane shows both local and network scanner on local machine. Scans locally via both drivers.
However, networked scanner is not discovered by machines on local network, using XSane. Did a similar installation a few months ago with openSuSE 11.0, which works fine on the same client machine.
Have tried disabling firewall, but still no joy.
So, questions:
1] Is there anything I have missed?
2] Is anything known to be broken in 11.2?

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my Acer netbook (AOA-150-1635) the wireless works fine with WinXP, Ubuntu, and used to work with Suse 11.1. I replaced the Suse 11.1 with a clean network install of Suse 11.2. I couldn't get the wireless to work and did another network install using the wireless. When the install was completed I could not get the wireless to work with Suse 11.2. When I run the "collectNWData.sh" it shows--

I looked up error CD0120E and changed the network devices setup to "traditional". The wireless "scan" picked up the routers and I added the encryption keys. Still no joy. I ran "collectNWData.sh" again and it said it is better to use the Network Manager.

Going back to Yast, Network Devices, I set Network Manager. The result is that it is back to the beginning with "collectNWData.sh" giving the original error.
I am unable to connect to a WEP-protected network. the Network manager log shows either a DHCP timeout, or a failure to associate. (attached below).Changing to WPA is not an option, as the network is not controlled by me. This is with the rt61pci driver for a Ralink 2500 series chipset.(Rosewill RNX-G300EX card)Manually forcing an IP does not result in a connection either. This is with the latest OpenSuSE 11.4, all patches applied. Router is a D-Link DIR-613, and I know the passphrase I'm using is correct because it connects both on my Android (what else?) phone, and my lappy when I boot XP.

I tried to set up my internet connection using the network manager and not the classic iufp method. At first it just didn't work but after deactivating IPv6 I got it working: firefox can connect to the internet. What troubles me is the online update with Update Applet. The following message pops up: "Error: packageKit error repo-not-available: Failed to download /media fromAlso when I go to Yast->Software->Software repositories I get the msg:Systemadministration is blocked by PID 2459 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd). View 3 Replies View RelatedOriginally after an installation of openSUSE 11.4, I had no internet connection at all, even when connecting with ethernet cable. But then I tried switching back to YaST and then back to Network Manager, and restarted a couple times, and now I have internet connection. DNS is also working, for Ping. The problem is that firefox does not use DNS and cannot resolve host names. I can use Firefox with IP numbers.

I can connect to the Internet on my WLAN just fine (using Opera) and can dload torrent files (using the same).
However, I have had trouble accessing some community repositories in the past, cannot synchronise with an NTP server (annoying since my battery is low and time and date are reset most reboots) and cannot use the lyrics function or Wikipedia function in Amarok. Nor can I connect to the net using Firefox (though conqueror works just fine...) I cannot download torrents on KTorrent either.
It seems that there is some sort of 'permission'/connectivity issue.
I'm not able to connect to my university's internet facilities under openSUSE 11.4. I have been able to connect in the past and I am still able to connect in Windows 7.When I try to connect to the university WiFi, a valid IP address is assigned to me and the gateway address appears to be correct, so I don't see a problem in the DHCP negotations. Same with my university's Ethernet: I get a valid IP address, but I can't connect to the internet.When I browse to any site with Chromium/Chrome/ Firefox/lynx/curl, the page is stuck at "Sending request". I have tried disabling my firewall - that didn't solve anything.I don't know what else I can try and the campus' network administrators are puzzled. How can I resolve my issue?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones
I have done a fresh install of the OS and I am having wifi trouble. I am failing in connecting to an access point that Windows works fine with on the same machine. As far as I can tell it is connecting but not getting an IP address via DHCP. when running ifup it says its backgrounding getting an ip address.

The kNetworkManager works well on the laptop both on user account and root account. It connects to my mobile broadband fine.
The problem appeared on my PC. When I log into root account - everything seems to be fine, It connects through knetworkmanager - The cellular connection gets activated, I see X and a heart near "Activated". root account reads my DNS'es from resolv.conf
When I only log into the user account (not as root), the knetworkmanager connects - but as I've checked - it seems that it doesn't use the DNS adresses I've entered in resolv.conf (netconfig_dns_policy is set to "") so I can manually add openDNS to the resolv.conf). It just connects -
I did CHMOD the files resolv.conf and config in sysconfig/network - no luck.
The only way to bypass this is logging to root first - connect there, then switch to user while staying connected... but I think it's an annoying solution.

So I want to get mount/umount option under right click services menu. I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

Had setup ssh in openSUSE 11.2 and modified the configuration file /etc/ssh/sshd_config to PermitRootLogin noHowever, I am still able to login through ssh as a normal user and then do a su to switch to a superuser/root.Isn't PermitRootLogin no supposed to prevent this?

I put this file in cgi-bin folder of Apache server. Here is my problem : when I run this file with shell as root user it makes change to iptables, but when I use my browser to run this file, it doesn't make any change. I'm sure this is because Apache doesn't have permission to manipulate iptables. How can I start Apache as a user with root privileges ?

However, my web browser, IM etc only work in root account.In user, knetworkmanager does show that my Huawei E160G is working fine, connected but I still can't surf the net & chat. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.
View 4 Replies View Relatedsince a couple of days my clutterflow preview doesn't work in nautillus-elementary any more. First I thought it is because of an ubuntu update. But I'm not sure. I have installed the latest version from am-monkeyd's ppa. The strange thing is that it works when I start nautilus as root.
Edit: After several trys I found the solution: press ALT + F2, enter: gconf-editor and then navigate to apps > nautilus > preferences and enable 'show_clutter'.Restart Nautilus (nautilus -q). That's it.That did the trick.But I still don't know how this setting was unchecked...
Regarding the usage of our PKI, some security consultants suggested to let our root CA offine (hardware online but disconnected from the network). However, when it is offline, I don't understand how to sign certificate request or to publish CRL. How a PKI works with the root CA offline? USB sticks?
