OpenSUSE Network :: Wired Internet Only Works When It Wants Too
Mar 6, 2010
my problem is that the wired internet is working on and off, or not even that, only when it wants too. I have googled and googled, which by the way is not loading at all at the moment, and have not found anything. And i really don't know what's wrong. Some more details: 1) Finished installing suse 11.2 with gnome, yesterday. Internet, and google worked fine right off the bat. I have a laptop and so i suspended it to see if everything was working. 2) Bring back the laptop, no internet. I reboot, internet works (google included). 3) I leave the laptop alone, it goes to sleep mode (or what comes after screensaver).
I bring it back, no internet, i reboot, no internet. So i go to windows. 4) Came back to suse, now, and i have internet and google does not load! This is all with wired internet, i haven't had a chance to try the wireless (there isn't a signal for me to try). However, i am positive it won't work with the luck i've been having. Also, a few days ago i had suse with kde and the internet worked continously. I know it can't be related to the GUI, but it's peculiar.

I'm new to OpenSuSE and have just booted up an Acer Aspire 4736z laptop with the 11.2 livecd. All of the specs (gathered from lspci -n) are available here: Debian HCL - Acer / Aspire 4736Z. Wired internet does not work. I have tried `modprobe atl1e` then `service network restart`to no effect. NetworkManager says nothing is plugged in (perhaps a hotplugging issue?). eth0 is listed in ifconfig.

Opensuse 11.2 - wired internet connection
I keep losing internet connectivity from within OpenSuse. I've had ubuntu/kubuntu beforeand never had a problem. I installed opensuse and now after a few minutes of browsing I'll lose my internet connection.I also dual boot into winXP without any problems.I noticed that when the connection is lost I can't even reach my router - which is where I'm getting the wired connection from.So it's not just the outside internet but the local network too. It only happens within opensuse.

I used the "Upgrade" option the last couple of nights to go from 8.04 LTS and was going to go to latest version. Well got the upgrade done last night on 9.10 and now Broadcom gigabit wired connect will not connect to internet. Can ping router just fine. Just cannot get outside of it. Shows as configuredin ifconfig. But the name of it under the network manager is odd. Its ifupdown (eth0) (default) and maps to ent1.

My wired internet was working fine and dandy under Maverick until today. For no apparent reason, it stopped. The router works fine. All other computers are able to connect. I've tried using different cables with no luck. I have a Biostar A785G3 motherboard with an integrated Realtek RTL8111DL ethernet controller.
My problem sounds very similar to this guy's: [url]. But his strange solution didn't seem to work in my case.

I tried to set up my internet connection using the network manager and not the classic iufp method. At first it just didn't work but after deactivating IPv6 I got it working: firefox can connect to the internet. What troubles me is the online update with Update Applet. The following message pops up: "Error: packageKit error repo-not-available: Failed to download /media fromAlso when I go to Yast->Software->Software repositories I get the msg:Systemadministration is blocked by PID 2459 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd). Close the application and try again.Using the command "sudo zypper refresh"eates the same message.I spent already hours trying to figure out the problem without luck

I'm using 11.2 with KDE.
I can connect to the Internet on my WLAN just fine (using Opera) and can dload torrent files (using the same).
However, I have had trouble accessing some community repositories in the past, cannot synchronise with an NTP server (annoying since my battery is low and time and date are reset most reboots) and cannot use the lyrics function or Wikipedia function in Amarok. Nor can I connect to the net using Firefox (though conqueror works just fine...) I cannot download torrents on KTorrent either.
It seems that there is some sort of 'permission'/connectivity issue.

I'm not able to connect to my university's internet facilities under openSUSE 11.4. I have been able to connect in the past and I am still able to connect in Windows 7.When I try to connect to the university WiFi, a valid IP address is assigned to me and the gateway address appears to be correct, so I don't see a problem in the DHCP negotations. Same with my university's Ethernet: I get a valid IP address, but I can't connect to the internet. When I browse to any site with Chromium/Chrome/ Firefox/lynx/curl, the page is stuck at "Sending request". I have tried disabling my firewall - that didn't solve anything.I don't know what else I can try and the campus' network administrators are puzzled. How can I resolve my issue?

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.
The output of some terminal commands are below.

However a pint to that ip address (my router) is successful.

Hosts.allow and hosts.deny are both fine (not blank but no entries)

I just installed debian, durning the installation i opted not to connect to the internet since the large network cable was in the closet and i did not feel like standing up. Now i have finished installing and plugged the network cable in, expecting it to "just work", this is not the case. What needs to happen before the wired network connection starts working? also, the lspci output, appearantly it won't find any network adapter. I suspect this is the fault of my lazyness.

Background infoMy laptop (MySN MG6.c) is dual-booted with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10, and connected to the internet through a router (Digitus DN-11004-O), which is set-up to use DHCP. The internet connection works fine under Windows, and my previous laptop, which also ran Ubuntu 9.10, had no problems connecting to the internet through that router. The network adapter is an Atheros AR8131 PCI-E (also detected as Attansic under Ubuntu)stem infoResults from running various diagnostics (I have removed the output that relate to the wireless connection, as I don't use it):

I just installed Ubuntu server edition on to an old Dell desktop. The only problem is that I can't get the Internet to work. I have tried the following and I guess it doesn't work:
Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.52/24 up
sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1
Each of those commands don't give me any error and it would seem like everything works fine, until I try to ping google or any website and I get an error that tells me that no host was found. I am using version 10.04 of Ubuntu server.

I'm having trouble getting onto the internet with ubuntu 9.04. I have just moved house and have just got the internet set up here (typing this on windows laptop with wireless). My ubuntu desktop is plugged in to the network, but in the top right hand corner when I click on the network icon I get: "Wired network device not managed"
In my old house I had a static IP. Is this anything to do with it?

Okay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.

A few days ago my wireless windows vista computer internet was running slow so i reset the modem. Then I went on the internet on my ubuntu machine machine and went to www.google.com and couldn't connect to the server so i tried linuxquestions and i couldn't connect but i could ping sites. My wired and wireless windows computers worked fine. So I called Comcast (my ISP) and said it was a router issue. So I looked online and it said to disable IPv6 on firefox so I did but that still didn't work.

I have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.
Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?

Last night while setting up wired & wireless connection in openSuse 11.2 Gnome version via YAST's ifup, I got wireless but lost wired connection (interface eth0). Dmesg shows that eth0 became eth1. I cannot get eth0 back. Is there any way to remedy this situation, eg. get info from the Ubuntu partition in my triple-boot laptop, without having to re-install openSUSE?

I posted this already in the absolute beginner section, but no answer was found, so I thought I might try this place..Long story as short as possible:
- I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for a friend who was fed up with WinXP crashing all the time
- After the install, networks was broken. I could ping sites outside the LAN, could connect to the router via firefox, but NO application could access the web. - The router works just fine, I tried with my own notebook.
- Disabling ipv6 in grub (edit /etc/default/grub and 'sudo update-grub') seemed to solve the problem.
- Then update the standard packages + install restricted extras and boom, Network gone: No ping to sites outside the LAN, no nothing. Still can connect fine to the router and even the remote desktop connection works, connecting over the internet. But that's it.
I have tried setting the mpu to a value recommended by my isp, I have set static ip and dns, I really don't now what to try any more.

My sons computer /w 11.4 x64 installed a week ago, was working fine till he wanted to play with Blender. So he installed it and it would not run because im lazy and did not instruct him on installing NVidia drivers for his vid card. He added the repo and I had him run update instead of just software management (my bad) anyhow ran the update and there were updates with driver install, rebooted Blender works now.But the nic card sates its not connected in yast no ip in root terminal /w ifconfig info there for nic mac addy and such, tried reboots and reconfig in yast no joy. Dual boot into his windblows and the nic work perfect so not hardware issue.

I checked etc/network/interfaces and there is as follows: auto lo iface lo inet loopback

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.
I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?
