i know this is crazy, but im using a [URL] and have loaded a copy of "red hat linux 7" on the computer. i have no idea what kind of hardware config/spec stuff i should have in my immediate vision, and if i did i'm not sure how i would make sense of it all. linux loaded fine. didnt save drivers. eth0 not showing in ifconfig report, but lo is connecting to network, other host cannot ping linux and vice versus

can mount a cdrom, but not a usb flash dont quite understand how the load methods work involving /mnt/cdrom/"usbutils-0.86tar.gz" eth0 problems and gnome rpm stupidity keeps me from upgrading sys from old version to a newer version, cant even find the cmd to show me that info, sorry. have usb files i want to mount, dont know how to loAD THE CDROM FOLES, SO EVEN THAT ISNT WORKING OUT HAVE DISCS WITH howtos just need to stay focused on steps to get desired end result, while trying to learn too much info for what im currently doing between all the f!@#@ing windows i have open.

Debian :: Network Do Not Take IP - IFConfig Eth0

I have a problem with the network. Worth two network cards and Ian wan. Do not take the ip. When the system boots not included until you do the command ifconfig eth0 up. The network card is connected to a router, he does not see it. Router working, tested. Network card is working well, tested on Windows. RX RT packages go, withheld support for ipv6 and packages no longer go.

OpenSUSE Network :: Ifconfig Eth0 RX Dropped Counters Since 11.4

I have been noticing a trend on boxes running 11.4 getting RX dropped packets where prior to 11.4 they did not get them. Basically every box running 11.4 now logs dropped RX packets. Have tried changing cables, and in one case replaced the NIC with a different brand (and driver) nic. Also played with receive buffers and yet the counters still increment. In addition to OpenSUSE, I run several operating systems to include Centos, Scientific Linux, Debian, OpenIndiana, HP-UX, VMS and so forth. So far this anomaly has only shown up on machines running OpenSUSE 11.4. Any one else noticing this on your OS 11.4 machines? If so, were you able to resolve?

I have two Linux hosts (both running Ubuntu 10.04) and I want one of them to have access to part of the filesystem of the other. I.e. I want remote1 to be able to access the files of remote2:/home/username

This is simply to allow me to access my home directory on the other machine, read-write, and there's no need for other users to be able to access this too. The used IDs for 'username' are different on each host, for reasons I won't go into (Likewise, ADS, etc).

I tried Samba but I found it unreliable. For example, I have a program that monitors a directory and updates a list of around 12,000 files. I found that this list was constantly changing with files dropping out and some files being randomly unreadable. It was too unreliable.

I had something working quite well on remote1 with:

sshfs remote2:/home/username ~/remote2 -o idmap=user -o uid=$(id -u) -o gid=$(id -g)

This works perfectly for a while. Unfortunately remote1 is a laptop and is regularly disconnected from the LAN. This seems to completely break things when this sshfs filesystem is mounted, and typically requires a reboot to recover. I started to look into NFS but I ran into problems with this a few years ago with regards to user id mappings. At the time, I found there was a user-space NFS server that dealt with this but it had a bunch of its own problems. But that was NFSv3. Can NFSv4 'kernel server' handle different user ids and map between them properly? I really don't want to use NIS, and I can't actually change the user IDs anyway - they are set by external means.

Also, how does NFS handle an 'unreliable' network connection? Will it automatically reconnect or will the share be broken until it is remounted? What about something like CIFS? Can this cope with the network being regularly and unpredictably broken? This might have the same problems that Samba did, but it's worth a try if it will be suitable.

A network client computer gets ip address from dhcp server, loads initrd and failed on Loading Istallation System stage 4 or 5. If I try to continue installation in manual mode I get an error net_activate: ifconfig eth0 up failed I tryed network cards from different vendors it did not help. Ubuntu linux installs successfully in current environment.

I have a somewhat complicated network setup that I am testing on an internal network. I have the following route setup:

PC Client (192.168.2.100) --> Router (192.168.2.1) --> DSLAM (on our internal network) --> PPPOE Server (192.168.9.1) on Linux Ubuntu 8.04 on interface card eth2.

On the same Linux Ubuntu Machine on interface card eth1 (static IP 192.168.5.100), I have an Asterisk SIP server plugged into it. SIP Server = 192.168.5.101 (static) I need the PC client (192.168.2.100) to register via SIP soft phone to register on the SIP server (192.168.5.101). From the PC client I can ping as far as the eth1 interface (192.168.5.100)...but cannot ping the SIP Server (.101).

From the SIP server (192.156.5.101)...I can ping 192.168.5.100, I can ping 169.254.5.228 (Eth2:avahi), but not sure what that is. I cannot ping the pppoe default gateway (192.168.9.1), which I think you cannot anyway. No firewalls are running. My IPtables I cleaned out totally. I think it might be as simple as a route add, but I really have no clue. Tried building a virtual bridge using brctl LINUX betweeh eth1 and eth2, but that made things worse (could not ping anything after that)

i have limited experience with Ubuntu and Linux for that matter. i know my way around for the most part but i come from windows. anyway. i have 6 dell gx260 computers. i also have a netgear 8 port Ethernet switch. now im just trying to get the computers to see each other. simple for me in windows. but i have no idea where to start here. it just says connecting to eth0 then network disconnected. and thats it. for now im just working with 2 of the computers. the others are not set up yet. i have been googling for 3 days and got nothing that helps. (my goal after they see each other is to share files back and forth. and also to have one of them control the others with some type of remote desktop. but thats for another day.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Get ETH0 To Appear In Ifconfig Via CAT5 Cable

I'm trying to get my Ubunutu and OSX systems to connected via a cat5 cable to transfer some large files around very quickly. Now i know normally this would require a crossover cable as it's a direct connection but the macbook/OSX can handle changing the wires round to make it work like a crossover cable as I've done it before. However the macbook creates a self-assigned IP or as I've tried I've set it to :
IP:10.10.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Then I've setup the Ubuntu system both through the System>Admin>Network panel as:
IP:10.10.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
and my /etc/network/interfaces file is the same;

Yet when I run ifconfig in the terminal eth0 isn't present

Also even when I try and ping 10.10.0.2 either from my OS X or the actually Ubunutu machine all I get is:

Further more if I check >System>Admin>Network Tools the IP for eth0 is 0.0.0.0. What could be going wrong and why no IP set correctly?

I've got a vmware install of Fedora 12 running as a server. This install has the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file configured with the proper info and the service has been restarted. When I run ifconfig I only get the loopback interface, when I run ifconfig -a I can get the eth0, but without the pre-configured ip address. When I enter ifconfig eth0 up I can activate the interface, but without the afore mentioned ip address. I need to be able to yum ssh, install it, and run it with rsa keys. Can do none of this without an interface obviously.

I cannot access/ping my Debian server. I know the IP is right (ifconfig, route and ip addr) all gave me 10.0.2.25 (route gave me 10.0.2.0).I cannot ping it from any computer in my netwerk, even when I try to ping it from my Debian itself, it gives me Destination Host Unreachable !(Wierdly, I can ping 10.0.2.2 tho).I am using virtualbox when the netwerk options 'NAT' turned on. When I look at my /etc/network/interfaces/ the last line looks like:iface eth0 inet dhcpShouldn't their be some other stuff listed?

This card was working perfectly fine up until....an hour ago and it started doing this. My iptables isn't blocking it somehow, because I didn't change anything. I tried reverting to an older kernel and that didn't help. It's not the network cable, it works fine in any other card. Also, the dropped packets seem to count down? It seems to go down by exactly one every time I run ifconfig, no matter the length of time in between running it.
