OpenSUSE Network :: Unable Cripple The Network When Downloading?

Feb 22, 2010

I am running OpenSuse 11.2 on my desktop here in the office and when I download anything, other users are complaining over very slow internet speeds. My download speed seems to be the same as other users using Windows, but downloading from a windows machine does not cripple the network. So is there something in my network setup that can be tweaked so that I do not cripple the network when downloading ?

OpenSUSE Network :: NTP And Downloading

Aug 2, 2011

On my 11.3 KDE if I leave the computer alone to download something and come back to check after a while I sometimes find that torrents or usenet downloads have been stopped long ago and kdeapplet displays the wrong time, anything from half and hour to ten hours late. I usually open NTP configuration screen, check if server is accessible and okay out of it and everything goes back to normal by itself, time is corrected and downloads resumed. What could be the reason for stopping downloads and how can I correct this problem? Is NTP the cause or just another symptom of a deeper problem? NTP is set to "now and on boot", interval is set to 5 min - I think those are all default settings.

OpenSUSE Network :: Wireless Not Responding, Hardware / Unable To Enable It Through Network-manager Applet?

Apr 4, 2010

I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable To Ping The Default Gateway When Using Custom Settings - Unreachable Network

Jul 17, 2011

I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable To Configure Network / NICs Not Being Detected?

Sep 6, 2011

I'm going to come right out and say I am a complete novice with Linux/SUSE. The equipment I'm having a problem with is a little web-server that was purchased by my employer that has, quite suddenly, stopped functioning. I was changing the IP address within YaST, at which point the device offered to update itself, which I saw no harm in. Post-update, however, I was unable to so much as ping the device.

I tried "ifconfig eth0": "Error fetching interface information: Device not found." I went into network settings via YaST and found that there are two cards now listed as: RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller Both IP addresses are "Not configured". The information pane, for both cards, cites:

RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controllerBusID : 0000:02:00.0 Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. The only difference in either of the cards is the BusID (0000:02:00.0 and 0000:03.00.0)

I can neither edit nor delete either of these cards. As I mentioned, I am a total Linux novice, and am at a total loss for what to do next, or even how to find critical information about the system itself. I know enough to check dmesg, but not enough to have any clue what to look for in the output.

OpenSUSE Network :: Complete Freeze When Downloading Torrents?

Apr 16, 2011

I'm experiencing complete system freezes when dowloading torrents with more than 800kb/sec (I think this is the limit, I've capped it at 750, and it seems to be running ok now). I had this same problem in Ubuntu aswell. But not in Win 7. The problem also appeared in ubuntu when streaming video through VLC with more than 800kbps.

As my connection gives me quite alot higher download speeds this kind of annoys me, and me being quite new to this whole Linux thing, don't really know what to do. I had a dialogue with someone at Ubuntuforums regarding this, but we pretty much got nowhere.

I have an ASUS 1201N laptop, with ION chipset.

Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wi-Fi Network With Network Manage

Nov 21, 2008

I'm unable to connect to a particular home wireless network under Fedora 9, although I can connect to it using WinXP on the same machine. My Fedora installation is able to connect to my college's unsecured wireless network, so it's not a driver issue I think. It seems to be an authorisation issue, as I'll describe below, but there's one other thing that's bothering me. The SSID for the network I have problems with is for some reason not listed in Network Manager's drop-down list, nor is it in the output of iwlist wlan0 scan. But I'm pretty sure it's not a "hidden" network - I don't know exactly how those work, but I helped the owner of the wifi network in setting it up, and don't remember doing anything that would make it hidden. As far as I can remember, Windows found the network automatically without having to be told the SSID. What's the best way to confirm whether it's a hidden network or not?

Anyway, I try to connect by selecting connect to other wireless network in Network Manager, and entering the SSID. As far as I can tell from the error messages below, the machine does contact the network and attempt to connect, but I'm not authorising myself properly. That may be a completely wrong diagnosis, but hopefully someone can see from the below info whether it's correct or not.I'm not sure which option to use for "Wireless Security": at the time we set up the network, it gave us a Hex WEP key of 26 characters, which is 104 bits. But none of the options in Network Manager's list match that. Here are the options it has, and the error message I get with each one:None - if I select this, it fails to connect, with no error message.
WEP 128-bit passphrase - if I select this and attempt to use my 26-character WEP key, it brings up a new dialog, saying "Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network [SSID]." It has a drop-down box labelled "Wireless Security", but this time the only option is "None", and the connect button is disabled, I can only click cancel.
WEP 40/128-bit hex - as above.
WEP 40/128-bit ASCII - The connect button is disabled when I try to use the WEP key, as the string is too long. Despite the fact that it says 40/128-bit, it actually accepts 5 and 13-character strings (40 or 104-bit). Since I've got a 104-bit hex key, I tried converting it to ASCII, but it consists of mostly unprintable characters, so I'm not sure there's any way to actually enter it into the textfield. I might have done something wrong here, so I've put my code below to see if anyone can point out a mistake.
LEAP - requires a username, not applicable here I think. Windows doesn't need one, and we don't have one from when we set the network up.Dynamic WEP (802.1x) - requires username, private key and various other things, all N/A WPA & WPA2 Personal - Brings up a dialog with the same text as for "128-bit passphrase", but this time "WPA & WPA2 Personal" is the only option in the drop-down list, instead of "None". It asks for a password, so I just enter the hex key again - now it asks for the password for the Gnome Default Keyring, which I don't think I've ever set up. Don't know if I can go any further with that, but my understanding is that since we were given a WEP key when we set up the network, WPA will be N/A.WPA & WPA2 Enterprise - as Dynamic WEP. N/A.Hopefully that's enough info that someone can help diagnose the problem. Some of the behaviour of Network Manager described above doesn't make sense to me, and I'm wondering if it's buggy.

Ubuntu Networking :: Rtorrent Killing Network Whether Downloading Or Not

Jul 8, 2011

I use Ubuntu 10.04 server as a base for my media center, with rtorrent as my download program. I've had to move into a smaller place where I don't have direct control over the network, and where we have a vanishingly poor DSL connection. When I start up rtorrent, every computer on the network starts having dramatic slowdowns of internet speed, even when both my downloads and uploads are throttled to 1KBps, which is as low as rtorrent will go. Unfortunately, as I said, I don't have direct access to the router. The IT guy says my media center "is sending requests to all the computers on the network like crazy". How he knows that, I don't know, nor do I know exactly what he means.

But it is only when I have rtorrent running, even when it's only running 1k each way. It was my intention to test whether or not running utorrent on my Windows box had the same effect, but it's telling me "an attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions" on all trackers, which I've also been unable to resolve. It may or may not be symptomatic of the same issue, but the UI of rtorrent is painfully slow. As in, I push the down arrow, go make myself a sandwich and watch some telly, and maybe when I'm done it's selected the next torrent. I used to use Transmission, but it used more resources and interfered with watching shows.

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable KDE With VNC Connection?

Jan 27, 2010

I'm trying to enable a VNC connection from a Windows machine to remotely connect into my openSUSE machine (11.2, KDE, 64-bit), but I cannot get any desktop environment to load up at all. It just comes up with a blank screen and a black cross for a cursor. What I want is to be able to see exactly what I would normally see if I were sitting in front of it, rather than go into a 'virtual desktop' as appears to be the case. Ideally I would want to go into the KDE desktop environment in this instance, and it would also be nice if dual monitors could enabled for each remote session. How do I go about enabling my chosen environment?

If it makes any difference at all (although I doubt it does), I'm also using PuTTY in Windows in order to make an SSH tunnel to allow secure access, and I'm quite sure I've enabled all the necessary services for all of the above under the YaST Firewall (by the way, on a lesser note, do I need PuTTY to be installed at both ends for the SSH tunnel to work properly?). If you need a screenshot or output from terminal of sorts this can be arranged.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Unable To Set Up Ad-hoc Network

Oct 5, 2010

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit on a Lenovo G560. I'm able to establish both wired and unwired connections without problems. Now I'm in a situation where I'd like to share my laptop's internet connection with other devices. My thought was to establish an ad-hoc network that another computer could connect to wirelessly in order to get into the Internet, because I've only got one ethernet jack.

First thought was to use Network Manager, since that manages all my connections. A left click on the Network Manager icon brings up a menu in which "Wireless 802.11, Create network connection..." is an option. If I click on that I see a list of all the networks available in the area, as well as all the networks I've set up in the past. Below that are two options: "New Ad-Hoc Network" and "Connect To Other Network With Wireless 802.11..."

"New Ad-Hoc Network" seems like the right option, but when I double click on it the window closes and nothing happens. No error message, nothing. Network Manager continues to run and my connection is unchanged. If I just left click on it and then click "Connect" at the bottom of the window, the same thing happens.
