OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Use Internet Broadcast In Laptop?
Jul 2, 2010
I just want to ask if its possible to hear music from different stations using Internet Broadcast? If it only works for Windows platform, is there a way to work with openSUSE (install application or something that will work)?
By the way, here is the link that I am referring to: e-Radio Portal

I'm all new to Opensuse, but I've used Ubuntu before, I am having some issues with my wireless on Opensuse, the laptop is connected and the WEP key is correct and in the system information it says I'm online! However the internet does not work, I know the internet is online as my main Desktop Pc (Running Windows 7 64bit) which I'm typing this on, is connected to the internet!

I've just spent the entire night trying to get my computer to share Internet with my laptop. I have DSL Internet with the modem configured to bridge mode. On the openSUSE server I have two NIC's. When setting up the DSL (pppoe) it created a dsl0 which is using the NIC eth0. So now I have dsl0, eth0, and eth1 I configured eth1 for DHCP server. When I connect with my laptop using DHCP it gets an IP address just fine. However I can't access the Internet. I think my problem is in the Kernel IP Routing Table. Here is the output from /sbin/route -n
[Code]...
dsl0 obtains IP from ISP eth0 is set to DHCP although that confuses me because how can the same NIC have two IP Addresses? eth1 static IP 10.30.60.1

For an (art)installation I want a camera (webcam) to stream it's data to another computer with icecast2 server installed (including theora) in the same space. Problem is I need something without a gui.
The webcam is /dev/video0, and I would like to stream the video with vloopback (is working already with 2 pipes) to /dev/video3. If I'm right then I should be able to stream /dev/video4 to icecast.
How can I make the webcam video go into pipe /dev/video3? From [URL] I understand I have to do:
Code:
resize /dev/video0 /dev/video3 320x240 320x240
But then I get:
Code:
Usage: resize [-u] [-c] [-s [rows cols]]
[Code]....

We liked the idea to broadcast-stream live for our fellow students. Firstly we thought to start with music and then continue with interviews. If we cannot make it live, then we can play a recorded interview.
As I saw, both are playing with winamp for windows. Is there something helpful for playing with openSUSE (or linux in general)?
You'll tell me that most of my friends use windows, why now use their? I just wanted to make it open source and try to play some CC music first (like jamendo).

I might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.
[Code].....
Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.

Off and on for some time now I've been using a Toshiba x205-s9359 laptop with (11.4/KDE4.6) during the day as a general purpose laptop using the onboard LCD and in the evenings to run XBMC to play movies on a TV using an HDMI cable (no cable TV on our little island & Satellite TV is poor in the rainy season).
The video card is an NVidia GeForce 8700M GT with NVidia's proprietary driver v. 275.09.07 (installed the "hard way").
Audio info:
Code:
~> aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[Code]....
Now the Audio/Video both go to the TV via HDMI if it's connected prior to boot, if not the laptop works normally.
If you try this with XBMC don't forget to go to set the XBMC settings to "HDMI" as needed.

I setup the hostname for my linux machine to Linux. If I try ping Linux from the same computer it works. If I try from another computer inside my network the host can not be resolved. If I ping the IP from another computer it works.
I take a look in my router at DHCP client list and my linux machine doesn't have the Hostname set up.
How to broadcast the hostname to the entire network?

I've got openSUSE 11.3 running via liveUSB on a netbook and no matter how many times I try, I cannot get wireless to connect to my network.
My network is:
- non-broadcast
- WPA2 Personal
- G
The netbook is fairly recent from Asus and wireless works perfectly with Fedora 11 and Windows XP.

I've just discovered the app TuneIn on my Android phone, it allows you to access radio stations that broadcast over the net, as well net-only ones, in an easy searchable interface (the 'backend' is the website radiotime.com).
Is there a way to do a similar thing on Opensuse? Currently I have a small list of stations in banshee which I had to manually add - a very painstaking manual process. Is there a plugin for banshee or another program that does this well?

I've got a laptop running OpenSuse 11.1/KDE 4.2. I've got sound working just fine (can play music, etc), but whenever there's a system alert (like when I get a new email in Thunderbird), I hear a loud BEEP, as if it's coming from the PC speaker.

I installed a new Hard-Drive in the laptop. Then installed Ubuntu 10.4 or what ever it is from a Disk that I ordered and that went fine.It shows all the wireless networks in the area including mine 7-8 of them.all Are password protected but one{not mine} but can not connect to mine as it is locked. But does connect to the neighbors since they are left wide I know of 4-5 others here within distance that are suckin theirs up so it is slow. And "Not Mine" "Two Wire462" The password does not work and it is right.I called AT&T They said the pass word it needs is not the pass word it is the ten numbers on the bottom of the 2 Wire Gateway.

For how long I have suffered with ms. I have installed a couple of Linux versions 7-10 years back, and did not get very far with them, am still a newbie when I look at some of the stuff in Linux, but am willing to learn and am totally converted.
Am running
Laptop HP Pavillion dv6000
Mint 2.6.31-14 Generic
Modem Huawei E220
I have downloaded 9 files from: source code, exe x2, makefile, txt,and 2 shell script files. The exe files give me the msg "could not display file name etc" There is no app installed for exe files What dont I know and where can I find it. Would it be easier to take the machine to an internet cafe and plug in a cable to get it online, atm my other machine is a eee pc windows 7 starter and it has some weird stuff going on, says it has over 10 viruses? Anyway cant wait to get this over to Linux too.

I just installed the latest ubuntu (10.4 or something) on my computer, and it seems nice, but it won't connect to my wireless internet. Shouldn't it just automatically detect it? It doesn't seem to.
I'm not very computer savvy, but I figured that it may need to have drivers downloaded so it will work with my computer's wireless internet hardware.
But I don't think I can get any drivers if I'm not connected to the internet.
I do have another little USB wireless receiver, but that has an installation disk with an EXE file, which apparently does not work on ubuntu.
Note: My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525. Ubuntu is installed as the only operating system. It is freshly installed.

I have finally gotten my courage up and decided to take the plunge into Linux. I bought a used HP Pavilion zt1135 laptop, and loaded Ubuntu 10.04. The laptop has no other operating system on it. Everything seems to work fine except it won't connect to the internet. I am using a Comcast cable modem, which uses DHCP and a wired connection. It works fine on my XP computer, but on the Ubuntu laptop it claims there is no network connected. Firefox gives a message something like "No server found".
I have tried recycling the power to the modem and then booting up the laptop. I have tried unchecking "Enable Networking" and then re-checking it. I have checked the ethernet cable on another machine and found it OK. Is it possible Ubuntu does not have drivers for this laptop's ethernet connection, or that the laptop is defective?

Sorry if this is already posted, but I wasnt sure the right keywords to use the search feature... I am somewhat familiar with older Ubuntu, but recently got 11.04 and installed it on my girlfriends laptop and during installation when it was scanning for the DHCP or whatever it says it failed to find it or something or other and it gave options to do it manually or to do it later so I chose to do it later and after booting into the OS I can not do anything via the internet, not even updates. I have tried looking at the network connections and the only thing there is a wired connection. This laptop accesses the internet through a desktop with Cox cable internet and a wireless router...
