Ubuntu :: CanNot Log Onto Internet With Laptop ATT DSL?
Oct 29, 2010
I installed a new Hard-Drive in the laptop. Then installed Ubuntu 10.4 or what ever it is from a Disk that I ordered and that went fine.It shows all the wireless networks in the area including mine 7-8 of them.all Are password protected but one{not mine} but can not connect to mine as it is locked. But does connect to the neighbors since they are left wide I know of 4-5 others here within distance that are suckin theirs up so it is slow. And "Not Mine" "Two Wire462" The password does not work and it is right.I called AT&T They said the pass word it needs is not the pass word it is the ten numbers on the bottom of the 2 Wire Gateway.

I just installed the latest ubuntu (10.4 or something) on my computer, and it seems nice, but it won't connect to my wireless internet. Shouldn't it just automatically detect it? It doesn't seem to.
I'm not very computer savvy, but I figured that it may need to have drivers downloaded so it will work with my computer's wireless internet hardware.
But I don't think I can get any drivers if I'm not connected to the internet.
I do have another little USB wireless receiver, but that has an installation disk with an EXE file, which apparently does not work on ubuntu.
Note: My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525. Ubuntu is installed as the only operating system. It is freshly installed.

I have finally gotten my courage up and decided to take the plunge into Linux. I bought a used HP Pavilion zt1135 laptop, and loaded Ubuntu 10.04. The laptop has no other operating system on it. Everything seems to work fine except it won't connect to the internet. I am using a Comcast cable modem, which uses DHCP and a wired connection. It works fine on my XP computer, but on the Ubuntu laptop it claims there is no network connected. Firefox gives a message something like "No server found".
I have tried recycling the power to the modem and then booting up the laptop. I have tried unchecking "Enable Networking" and then re-checking it. I have checked the ethernet cable on another machine and found it OK. Is it possible Ubuntu does not have drivers for this laptop's ethernet connection, or that the laptop is defective?

Sorry if this is already posted, but I wasnt sure the right keywords to use the search feature... I am somewhat familiar with older Ubuntu, but recently got 11.04 and installed it on my girlfriends laptop and during installation when it was scanning for the DHCP or whatever it says it failed to find it or something or other and it gave options to do it manually or to do it later so I chose to do it later and after booting into the OS I can not do anything via the internet, not even updates. I have tried looking at the network connections and the only thing there is a wired connection. This laptop accesses the internet through a desktop with Cox cable internet and a wireless router...

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 with wireless working out of the box. I've been using it for the past few weeks because my iMac G5 has really slowed down with OS X. Today I installed 10.04 on the iMac G5 as well. However, wireless isn't working out of the box as it asks me to install the Broadcom wireless driver. The problem is, without this wireless driver, I can't install the drivers.
I am wondering if I can connect the laptop, which has wireless, to the iMac with a spare ethernet cable to give the iMac internet so it can download the driver.I'd rather not have to unplug it and move it downstairs to the router just to install the drivers.

How do I get internet connection through mobile broadband (internet stick Nokia CS 15) for my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens) with encrypted hard disc (LVM)? I have set up LVM using Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate install.
Earlier when I installed the ordinary desktop version (Ubuntu 10.04 desktop) using no encrypted disc the internet connection worked fine. Before I installed the software from the internet stick an image appeared (Nokia Modem) on the desktop. I dubbel clicked the image and through the files that appeared I installed the software. After that I clicked the Eject Volume and after some input I had my connection.
But now I dont get that image on my desktop when the stick is plugged in. I can imagine that I have to mount the stick some how. I can further imagine that the encrypted hard disc through its protection now stop me from this action.

Recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on laptop - new partition. Have PC running XP with internet connection. I have a satellite connect from Germany. I live in Turkmenistan.I know all IP addresses, subnet mask, Default gateway, etc. Can someone help configure internet on laptop w/Ubuntu? I am not the fastest ball down the alley but I shouldn't have too much problem with the terminal. Just be gentle. I just completed a pppoeconf search and was informed something or another couldn't be found. It's a little frustrating because I need to disconnect internet cable from PC and connect to Laptop. let me add that I do not have an internet user name or password "supplied by ISP". But I hooked up connection OK on XP.

For how long I have suffered with ms. I have installed a couple of Linux versions 7-10 years back, and did not get very far with them, am still a newbie when I look at some of the stuff in Linux, but am willing to learn and am totally converted.
Am running
Laptop HP Pavillion dv6000
Mint 2.6.31-14 Generic
Modem Huawei E220
I have downloaded 9 files from: source code, exe x2, makefile, txt,and 2 shell script files. The exe files give me the msg "could not display file name etc" There is no app installed for exe files What dont I know and where can I find it. Would it be easier to take the machine to an internet cafe and plug in a cable to get it online, atm my other machine is a eee pc windows 7 starter and it has some weird stuff going on, says it has over 10 viruses? Anyway cant wait to get this over to Linux too.

To start off I do not have the ability to post in the Networking/Wireless thread. I attend DeVry university and in my school they recently rolled out "Bluesocket." Now that they have done this I am not able to access the internet utilizing my ubuntu laptop.I am able to connect to the network. When I open my web browser I am redirected to the "bluesocket" login page where I am able to successfully log in. The next step to accessing DeVry's internet service is to allow Bluesocket to do a scan using a Java applet. That scan is successful.
The results of the scan inform me that I am not being allowed to access the network resources because I don't have an antivirus or firewall program installed on my computer. I do not wish to have an antivirus or firewall program installed on my laptop to utilize DeVry's network resources. My question is what steps do I need to take to bypass/trick bluesocket?

I have recently installed Ubuntu lucid lynx and at my old house I had a regular cable modem (no wifi) and never used wireless internet. I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors

My problem with UBUNTU is that I can not use acer-wmi because I get this ERROR :
Code:
... so I can not use the acer_wmi . But this is not my only Problem :
It is most likely caused of the missing " Firmware " / Driver for my WLAN Card ( Internal ) . Currently I use Ubuntu 10.10 but I tested 10.04 too before 10.10 and it found my Card but not the Button .
So I want to know if there is any solution for my problem .
If it is important :
I use an Acer eMachines e525 with Windows Vista Home Basic ( Pimped up ) and Wubi . I saw a lot of people with simmilar problems they have it as only boot option .

I have a spare ethernet cable, is it possible to connect the Ubuntu desktop to the internet by connecting it to the laptop with the cable? I'm not very good with computers. If this isn't possible, how would I go about connecting the desktop to the internet?

I have a 6 month old Acer (sorry not Asus as per the heading) Aspire laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu and cannot connect via wireless. It works fine via ethernet. Having spent several hour reading this forum, other web pages and the help file, I actually still have not got a clue either as to what the actual problem is or how to begin solving it. Is there a simple answer? If not, I'll go back to windows 7 as Ubuntu seems anything but the promises made.
