I can use a usb stick and it automatically shows up. When I plug in my microSD into my usb adapter I get an error message. I've seen lots of posts about this error message but everything I've read has been way over my head.

Strange, just fired up my laptop and Wicd is telling me that I am on a Wired Network. Somehow, I have no clue as to how but my wireless connection is now being interpreted as a wired one.

When I run iwconfig to see if my adapter is getting picked up I only get an output for the loopback interface and my Ethernet port. I installed the following packages which I thought would be enough to get it working:

I was able to get it working in a regular Ubuntu installation, but it doesn't seem to pick it up in this install. Does anyone have any tips/advice? I went with the minimal install because I wanted to see how lightweight I can get the OS.
It's a Acer Aspire 4520 Laptop running Vista Ultimate. All Drivers are working fine except Wireless. No wireless adapter is shown in Device Manager. Acer website was no help at all, has the drivers but no adapters for download. This laptop shows that it has Acer signalUp, also shows 802.11b/g WLAN on the sticker. I've downloaded Athero AR??? wireless driver, did not do anything to help the problem, downloaded the broadcom one also and it did nothing. Works fine on the LAN cable but no wireless.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn KDE I have no System Notifications, Kaffiene, Amarok2, Amarok and Xine immediately exit when opened without an error. If I try to open the System Settings/Multimedia or System Settings/Notifications control panels they also exit without an error. I have audio in other applications, MPlayer, Skype, VLC, Songbird, etc., as well as from the Konsole. I've tested Konsole audio using the published guidelines in the Audio HowTo, 'speaker-test' works fine for all users. In Yast2 I can configure and test the audio card without errors, but I am not able to get USB headphones working. I have been through the 'Check your multimedia problem in ten steps'. There are no errors or missing dependencies showing up. I've booted from the 11.2 Live CD and everything worked fine including KDE Notifications and application audio. I've tried deleting my .kde4 profile, this didn't fix the problem, and application and control panel behaviour remained the same with a clean profile.
View 1 Replies View RelatedopenSUSE 11.2 with KDE desktop, I have been using vlc to play .flv files without any difficulty or problems for months but it has suddenly stopped giving me any image on screen. The video is "running" according to progress bar and there is sound but just a black screen. Trouble is I cannot pin this down to any particular update so I am asking if anybody else has had this happen? I have run 1 click install multimedia and there were a few files updated but still no picture. I shall have to go through all the multimedia chacks and no time right now.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI pulled the MicroSD card out of a non-working Android phone to backup its data onto my Debian system. My Desktop is Cinnamon and I was simply using copy/past from within Nemo. The files began to be transferred but during the transaction a dialog popped up declaring an input/output error. From that point on the card was not readable on my system.
I initially plugged the card into the computer via a USB card reader. I later tried using an SD card adapter and plugging it in my printer's SD slot. Still the system would not recognize the card. I also tried plugging the card into another Android phone. The phone could not read the card and attaching the phone to a computer did not recognize the card either. I then logged into a Windows 7 system but it could not detect it. The partition manager always showed the USB drive or SD slot as "device not connected". The last thing I tried was putting the card, with the SD adapter, in my camcorder. The camcorder prompted to format but failed to do so.
I would like to recover the pictures and videos off of the card but I am afraid that there may have been hardware failure on the card's controller. I have been searching around most of the day trying to find a solution but nothing I have tried has rendered it detectable on any system. If it is controller failure, need repairing or recovering data from physically damaged SD cards?
The Motorola mounts in 10.04 but I can't tell the size of the available disc space so don't know if it's some internal memory or the 16 GB microSD card. It shows some files and a setup.exe so I suspect it's not the card and don't want to screw anything up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an HP laptop with a recently installed copy of Mint 8 KDE Community Edition. I created the initial admin user account ("joseph") when I installed.
I had an existing home directory under a different name from another installation, so I added a user with that name ("joe") and imported a copy of the original home directory. The user "joe" didn't have the same admin privileges as the initial "joseph" account, so I added "joe" to the sudoers file and the same groups as the initial admin user.
Everything works perfectly under this arrangement, for the most part. Now here's the problem:
I have a T-Mobile G1 phone that uses Android. I've rooted and ROM-modded the G1, and have the microSD card in the phone set up with two partitions. The vfat partition stores all the photos, music and other stuff the phone needs. The ROM mod allows me to store apps on the SD card, so that second partition uses ext3 for its file system.
When I'm logged in as the admin "joseph" account and I insert the SD card in the laptop's card slot (or plug the phone into the USB port), the SD card can be mounted, and I have full access to both card partitions. I can see all folders. I do this to backup the contents of the card to an external drive (especially the apps in the ext3 partition, since that's been trashed on me once before on the phone).
However, when I log in as "joe", I cannot view the contents of the ext3 partition at all. I can see the vfat drive fine, and the ext3 partition mounts, but with user/group "joseph/joseph." When I open Dolphin to view the mounted ext3 partition, I get the error "could not enter folder /media/disk-1" at the bottom of the view window in Dolphin.
Here are the relative entries returned when I run "mount" to view the mounted drives:
/dev/mmcblk0p1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,uid=1001,utf8,shortname=mixed,flush)
/dev/mmcblk0p2 on /media/disk-1 type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal)
Note that the uid listed on the vfat mount is 1001, which is the gid for the "joe" account.
I know there must be a configuration setting somewhere that will allow the ext3 partition to automount under the "joe" user account. I suppose that using the admin account to change the permissions would be the easy way to do this, but there must be something that would do it automagically. I've ripped through all the config files I can find, but can't seem to find anything that would help.
All I'm looking for here is enough access to be able to copy the directories on that mount to my external drive.
I'm running on 10.10 and planning on getting an usb -> vga adapter for my monitor. I've read some threads where many people seem to have troubles ... But all these threads are out of date! so my question is: does anyone know which usb-vga adapter works on 10.10? (or what you have to do to get a specific adapter working)

I have installed unbuntu 11.04. I have 3 screens. 2 are attached to a ATi adapter and 1 screen is a sandy bridge video adapter.
I have already used the forums a lot to reach this point.
When i change my bios to set the primary adapter to sandy bridge, I can only get 1 screen to work.
When I set my bios to point to the Ati adapter as primary, then only the 2 screens connected to that adapter work.
How do I get both video adapters and all 3 screens to work?
I have run out of ideas on what my next step should be.

I got my UGA video adapter in, when purchasing it I saw on its requirements that is showed it had linux support. However, when plugged it in and restarting no image but the default green image was shown. All wires are check and are plugged in. However, I am not seeing on the computer monitor and no 2nd monitor is found on the monitor settings. Also I would like to note that according to a little research, is that the usb video adapter uses displaylink. I am using Ubuntu 11.04, classic ubuntu and 2D unity desktop.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up an HP DisplayLink USB graphic adapter on Debian 6 to be paired with the notebook's integrated Intel i915 video card. I use a custom 3.11.1 kernel in which the options for VGA arbitration, fbdev framebuffer and DisplayLink driver are enabled as built-in, not as modules.
The device works and I'm able to correctly run an X session on a DVI monitor connected to my notebook thru this USB graphic adapter. However, I'm still not able to use both the DisplayLink device and the integrated Intel i915 at the same time under X, with the purpose to extend the desktop area over the two screens, side by side.
During a boot, if the DisplayLink adapter is detected over the USB cable, the X-server's Intel driver is repudiated as shown in the logs below, and the main notebook's screen stops working with X. (nonetheless, it still functions on the "Alt-F1" text terminal).

I am trying to dual boot into Ubuntu and thus far everything works great on my machine. There is one HUGE issue.
I am running 2 Radeon 4870 Cards. Only one adapter will show at a time. I am used to Having 4 monitors and the max amount of Monitors it will allow me to have are two.
It does recognise the Second Adapter when I go into the Catalyst Control (it shows the option for Cross Firing) and it shows both adapters when I do:

The closest I had was that my main two monitors showed the splash page when the other two monitors on the other adapter were displayed. So It did switch once... But I have yet get all four monitors to work.

I Have an HP Pavilion G6. I recently installed openSUSE after having no luck with another linux distribution. I was told openSUSE is more compatible with laptops, so I figured I'd give it a try. I am now facing the same problem I had been facing w/ the other distribution (Ubuntu). My Network Adapter doesn't seem to be recognized by any linux operating systems. It is a Ralink 802.11b/g/n WiFi adapter. When I open the "network" tab, my home wifi is not listed, nor are any around me. In fact, I can't even open the "wireless" tab.
I've installed any recent drivers for my adapter, and I went to extensive lengths to try to solve the issue on my previous linux distribution. I don't know what output to give you from the terminal, nor do I really know any commands to look for anything. On a side note, I had been messing with my touchpad application, trying to set my preferences. I check the boxes for horiz. and vertic. scrolling with two fingers, and apply. They don't work. I check the boxes for using two finger tap to do something, and three finger tap to do something else.
I'm having some issues with openSUSE 11.2 recognizing my Broadcom adapter. Following the instructions in the two stickied topics, I can find the adapter both under YaST's Hardware Summary and using the console command /sbin/lspci. I cannot, however, find it with /sbin/lspci -n, and the boot log (viewed with dmesg | less) makes no mention of it either.
Do I need to turn it on or something? This is a dual boot machine, and it works fine under Windows, so I don't think there's a hardware failure at play here.
I just installed a fresh install of Debian Wheezy to an old Pentium 4 desktop computer I found on Craigslist. Everything is mostly up and running but I've been encountering an odd issue with Firefox. Whenever I type text into either a search or text dialog on Youtube, Facebook or on Duck Duck Go the text is invisible. I can highlight the text to see what I have written, but obviously this is quite annoying not to be able to view what I am typing in these places in real-time. The strange thing is that it is only these sites that I have found, everywhere else (reddit, google, Debian forums as well) can see what I am typing. I'm using Firefox 35.0 right now.

Recent update is causing problems with the top and bottom panels not to show when I restart and or start my acer aspire one netbook. It takes several retries to try to get it to show. I don't know what the possible problem is my guess is the gdm3 is the one causing the problems.
