Debian Hardware :: Damaged MicroSD Card During File Transfer

Oct 13, 2015

I pulled the MicroSD card out of a non-working Android phone to backup its data onto my Debian system. My Desktop is Cinnamon and I was simply using copy/past from within Nemo. The files began to be transferred but during the transaction a dialog popped up declaring an input/output error. From that point on the card was not readable on my system.

I initially plugged the card into the computer via a USB card reader. I later tried using an SD card adapter and plugging it in my printer's SD slot. Still the system would not recognize the card. I also tried plugging the card into another Android phone. The phone could not read the card and attaching the phone to a computer did not recognize the card either. I then logged into a Windows 7 system but it could not detect it. The partition manager always showed the USB drive or SD slot as "device not connected". The last thing I tried was putting the card, with the SD adapter, in my camcorder. The camcorder prompted to format but failed to do so.

I would like to recover the pictures and videos off of the card but I am afraid that there may have been hardware failure on the card's controller. I have been searching around most of the day trying to find a solution but nothing I have tried has rendered it detectable on any system. If it is controller failure, need repairing or recovering data from physically damaged SD cards?

Ubuntu :: Accessing MicroSD Card On Android Motorola XT720?

Oct 15, 2010

The Motorola mounts in 10.04 but I can't tell the size of the available disc space so don't know if it's some internal memory or the 16 GB microSD card. It shows some files and a setup.exe so I suspect it's not the card and don't want to screw anything up.

General :: Mint 8: Regular User Can't Access Ext3 Partition On Mounted MicroSD Card?

Feb 19, 2010

I have an HP laptop with a recently installed copy of Mint 8 KDE Community Edition. I created the initial admin user account ("joseph") when I installed.

I had an existing home directory under a different name from another installation, so I added a user with that name ("joe") and imported a copy of the original home directory. The user "joe" didn't have the same admin privileges as the initial "joseph" account, so I added "joe" to the sudoers file and the same groups as the initial admin user.

Everything works perfectly under this arrangement, for the most part. Now here's the problem:

I have a T-Mobile G1 phone that uses Android. I've rooted and ROM-modded the G1, and have the microSD card in the phone set up with two partitions. The vfat partition stores all the photos, music and other stuff the phone needs. The ROM mod allows me to store apps on the SD card, so that second partition uses ext3 for its file system.

When I'm logged in as the admin "joseph" account and I insert the SD card in the laptop's card slot (or plug the phone into the USB port), the SD card can be mounted, and I have full access to both card partitions. I can see all folders. I do this to backup the contents of the card to an external drive (especially the apps in the ext3 partition, since that's been trashed on me once before on the phone).

However, when I log in as "joe", I cannot view the contents of the ext3 partition at all. I can see the vfat drive fine, and the ext3 partition mounts, but with user/group "joseph/joseph." When I open Dolphin to view the mounted ext3 partition, I get the error "could not enter folder /media/disk-1" at the bottom of the view window in Dolphin.

Here are the relative entries returned when I run "mount" to view the mounted drives:

/dev/mmcblk0p1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,uid=1001,utf8,shortname=mixed,flush)
/dev/mmcblk0p2 on /media/disk-1 type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal)

Note that the uid listed on the vfat mount is 1001, which is the gid for the "joe" account.

I know there must be a configuration setting somewhere that will allow the ext3 partition to automount under the "joe" user account. I suppose that using the admin account to change the permissions would be the easy way to do this, but there must be something that would do it automagically. I've ripped through all the config files I can find, but can't seem to find anything that would help.

All I'm looking for here is enough access to be able to copy the directories on that mount to my external drive.

How would I transfer the partition to a cf card? I tried using dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/sdb1, but as that doesnt work I have the feeling there's more to do... Maybe install GRUB on the CF-Card? Change some paths after copying?

Debian :: File Transfer Between Two Computers

I have transferred those with less than 2GB (that is the size of my usb-flashdrives) to my netbook (with opensuse-11.3 OS) with the help of usb-flashdrives. Is there any method of tranferring the larger files by connecting the two machines by ethernet cables with usb ports and using some software packages?

Debian :: What Is The Best Way To Perform A Backup / File Transfer

Jan 21, 2010

1. What is the best way to perform a backup? (system state as well as individual files) Although system state can also be accomplished through the hypervisor.

2. Between Windows computers, I access shared directories simply by \hostnamesharedmap or \host_IPsharedmap. Between Windows and linux i use SAMBA. But there must be a simple way to copy 2 files between linux hosts?

3. I've searched a lot, and only found people with the same question without a good answer: is there a linux equivalent for robocopy?

Having a bit of a issue with Debian Squeeze and transferring files to the Sony PSP..Hook up PSP to USB port and Debian mounts it..I go to drag a 125 meg mp4 to video folder..Copy windows takes about 10 seconds to transfer it..Exit USB mode and there is no video there. Go back into USB mode and look at video folder on the PSP memory stick and there is no video..It vanished. From another after copy progress closed I right clicked PSP and unmounted it..

It error-ed saying device was busy and could not unmount..Looking at light on PSP i see memory stick is still being written to..i wait for light to stop flashing..About a minute or so..Then am able to unmount it..Go to PSP video and theres the video ready to be watched. Debian isnt accurately showing the copy progress...Its showing complete when it isnt..I have to watch the light on PSP to know when it is truly finished.

Debian :: Rescue Data From Damaged Lvm?

Apr 16, 2010

I have 6 disks (partitions) combined into one lvm volgroup in my server. The server have been online for a year.

And today, suddenly it hangs. At first, I thought it's caused by network lag, because after a couple minutes the server is responsive again. But then I felt something very wrong. I can't access any file that stored on the lvm.

After some dmesg, fdisk -l and a peek at /etc/lvm/archive/*, I found that one of the partitions used for lvm volgroup is missing. Tried a reboot, and the suspected disk is undetected even in BIOS. Must be caused by bad block on the disk's sector zero or something. I think missing one pv makes the volgroup failed to initiate. So, no volgroup, no logical volume. And I can't access the files on it for sure.

Is there a way I can save/rescue data from other non-damaged disks? I have no luck finding similar situation (and solution) by searching on google.

Hardware :: Transfer Speed To SDHD Card

Mar 19, 2010

I connected a 16GB SDHD Class 4 card to my PC with a dongle reader. A class 4 card is supposed to support a minimum of 4 MB/s sustained speed. I grabbed a couple of large, 4.4 GB each, files and copied them to the SD card with Nautilus. The transfer rate started out at 60 MB/s and rapidly dropped to 50 then 40 and slowly dropped to 3.5 MB/s after about 3 GB transferred and it is still dropping.The PC will copy from drive to drive at 65 MB/s so I do not think the issue is reading from the hard drive.I am confused about the transfer speeds which Nautilus is showing. Obviously I am not really transferring to this card at 50+ MB/s. If I was moving data from hard drive to cache I would expect much more speed - I have 8 GB of RAM on the PC. That said, I have stopped the transfer and attempted to unmount the card. I get the message "Failed to eject media; one or more volumes on the media are busy." This has been going on for several minutes so some activity is going on in the background.

Programming :: TCP / UDP File Transfer In C Or C++

Oct 27, 2010

I need to create a program that has both a server and a client and can transmit PDF and text files between the two using UDP as the underlying carrier while behaving as if it is TCP. We have successfully created a UDP program that can simply transmit strings, but we are not really sure on how to transform this code to do files. We know that we need to use a buffer of some sort to transmit the file in pieces.

Code:
//dg_cli.c
#include "unp.h"
#include "sys/socket.h"
#include "string.h"
#include "stdio.h"
#include "stdlib.h"
#include "arpa/inet.h"
#include "netdb.h"
#include "sys/file.h"
#include "sys/types.h"

void dg_cli(FILE *fp, int sockfd, const SA *pservaddr, so
{ int n;
char sendline[MAXLINE], recvline[MAXLINE + 1];
while (fgets(sendline, MAXLINE, fp) != NULL) {
sendto(sockfd, sendline, strlen(sendline), 0, pse
n = recvfrom(sockfd, recvline, MAXLINE, 0, NULL,
recvline[n] = 0; /* null terminate */
fputs(recvline, stdout); } }

Code:
//dg_echo.c
#include "unp.h"
#include "sys/socket.h"
#include "string.h"
#include "stdio.h"
#include "stdlib.h"
#include "arpa/inet.h"
#include "netdb.h"
#include "sys/file.h"

void dg_echo(int sockfd, SA *pcliaddr, socklen_t clilen)
{ int n;
socklen_t len;
char mesg[MAXLINE];
for ( ; ; ) {
len = clilen;
n = recvfrom(sockfd, mesg, MAXLINE, 0, pcliaddr, &len);
sendto(sockfd, mesg, n, 0, pcliaddr, len); } }

Code:
//udpcli01.c
#include "unp.h"
#include "sys/socket.h"
#include "string.h"
#include "stdio.h"
#include "stdlib.h"
#include "arpa/inet.h"

servaddr.sin_port = htons(SERV_PORT);
inet_pton(AF_INET, argv[1], &servaddr.sin_addr);
sockfd = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_DGRAM, 0);
dg_cli(stdin, sockfd, (SA *) &servaddr, sizeof(servaddr));
exit(0);
}

Code:

#include "sys/socket.h"
#include "string.h"

servaddr.sin_port = htons(SERV_PORT);
bind(sockfd, (SA *) &servaddr, sizeof(servaddr));

Fedora :: VNC Viewer With File Transfer?

I've looked around and so far I haven't found a Linux client that supports either Tight or Ultra file transfer. For example, we are currently connecting to Windoze servers that run UltraVNC server. It would be nice if the Linux VNC client could support file transfer. The alternative is to run the VNC viewers in Wine but I'd rather use a native Linux one if there is such a thing.

General :: Transfer A Zip File That Contains .txt Files Using Ftp Put?

Sep 13, 2011

I am transferring a file from a linux pc going to a windows ftp server using "ftp put". My file is a zip file that includes .txt files inside it. Here is what's happening when I transferred this file :I used ftp put for transferring and found that my transferred zip file was corrupted and couldn't be opened on the ftp server.I found the solution for this on the internet. I needed to use 'binary' to make it right.

I transferred again using binary and then ftp put the zip file onto the other end. Yes, it worked. My zip file wasn't corrupted anymore and I could already opened it on the ftp server. But the problem remains on the .txt files inside it. Converting the file into binary made my .txt files to be distorted and unreadable. I read from the internet that .txt files need to use Ascii instead of Binary to be readable, but if I use ascii it would cause my zip file to be corrupted again. I need to successfully transfer a zip file that contains .txt files using ftp put.
