Ubuntu Multimedia - Get Usb To Vga Adapter For Monitor

Nov 10, 2010

I'm running on 10.10 and planning on getting an usb -> vga adapter for my monitor. I've read some threads where many people seem to have troubles ... But all these threads are out of date! so my question is: does anyone know which usb-vga adapter works on 10.10? (or what you have to do to get a specific adapter working)

General :: Broadcom BCM4328 Wireless Adapter Not Supporting Monitor Mode Using WL And B44?

Feb 8, 2009

A friend of mine has a Dell XPS1530 lappy that has a broadcom bcm4328 wireless adapter. I tried installing kismet on it so I can scan for wireless network in range. I configured it with the source driver as bcm43xx in kismet.conf and complained that the driver didn't support monitor mode. It uses the proprietary 'wl' kernel module to operate but kismet can't use the 'wl' module and it says the same error. I tried unloding the wl and b44 modules and loding the b43 driver but then the adapter stoped working. I searched on the net a bit and found out that kisment doesn't work with the prorpietary drivers for that card.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable Secondary Monitor Quickly Other Than Loading Up Nvidia-settings And Disabling The Monitor Every Time?

Jun 29, 2010

Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.

Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can Only Get 1 Video Adapter To Work At The Same Time

Jul 12, 2011

With out going into 2 much detail at this point this is my issue.

I have installed unbuntu 11.04. I have 3 screens. 2 are attached to a ATi adapter and 1 screen is a sandy bridge video adapter.

I have already used the forums a lot to reach this point.

When i change my bios to set the primary adapter to sandy bridge, I can only get 1 screen to work.

When I set my bios to point to the Ati adapter as primary, then only the 2 screens connected to that adapter work.

How do I get both video adapters and all 3 screens to work?

I have run out of ideas on what my next step should be.

Ati adapter is a Radeon HD 4800 Series. The Sandy bridge one HD Graphics Family

Also I would like to note that according to a little research, is that the usb video adapter uses displaylink. I am using Ubuntu 11.04, classic ubuntu and 2D unity desktop.

Debian Multimedia :: DisplayLink USB Graphic Adapter With Intel I915

Jun 6, 2014

I'm trying to set up an HP DisplayLink USB graphic adapter on Debian 6 to be paired with the notebook's integrated Intel i915 video card. I use a custom 3.11.1 kernel in which the options for VGA arbitration, fbdev framebuffer and DisplayLink driver are enabled as built-in, not as modules.

The device works and I'm able to correctly run an X session on a DVI monitor connected to my notebook thru this USB graphic adapter. However, I'm still not able to use both the DisplayLink device and the integrated Intel i915 at the same time under X, with the purpose to extend the desktop area over the two screens, side by side.

During a boot, if the DisplayLink adapter is detected over the USB cable, the X-server's Intel driver is repudiated as shown in the logs below, and the main notebook's screen stops working with X. (nonetheless, it still functions on the "Alt-F1" text terminal).

Relevant portion of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
In particular, it shows: [ 2509.084] (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
Code: Select all[  2509.061] (II) FBDEV: driver for framebuffer: fbdev

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 8.04 Can't Get 1920x1080 From New LCD Monitor?

Oct 12, 2010

I finally decided to replace my monitor. I got a HANNspree HF225 with a native resolution of 1920x1080.

Alas, my Ubuntu 8.04 only allows me to select the 1400x1050 (50Hz) as the highest resolution.

I tried using gksudo displayconfig-gtk, to no avail. (yes, I also tried selecting Generic LCD display 1920x1080).

The strange thing is the monitor itself (via its OSD information) says it is running 1680x1050 (at H: 65.6KHz V: 60.3Hz).

Clearly, Ubuntu 8.04 can't see the real hardware capabilities of my system. My graphics card is "nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE] (rev a1)". I know it is capable of delivering the 1920x1680 because it has been previously driving 1920x1600 on a DELL P1110.

how to get 1920x1080 on my system?

How do i get each monitor to show it's own desktop?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Set Monitor Resolution?

Jul 16, 2010

I just switched monitors to a Viewsonic VX2025 and I am unable to get beyond 1280 x 1024 using the nvidia x server settings. My graphics card is a GeForce 5200. These are connected with a DVI plug. I would like to be able to set my resolution to 1920 x 1080. (Also, the card and monitor worked at 1920 x 1080 in a previous windows machine.)

I have done a fair bit of searching and it appears that my issue is either the x configuration file or EDID. After 2 days of working with this it's gotten confusing to say the least. So, I'm looking to see if others have had a similar problem and how to solve it. I have not altered an x config file before, so not exactly sure of where to begin.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Multi Monitor Configuration With Two ATI GPU

Aug 20, 2010

I have 2 GPUs in my system, a HD4870 and a HD4350. The HD4870 has a Benq 24" and a Dell 17" which are working fine in a multi-display desktop setting (No Xinerama) configured via CCC. On the HD4350 I have a single Samsung 17" which in CCC is listed as '[Unknown Display] Unknown adapter' and cannot be used. How can I get that working properly so I can configure it as an additional screen in this setup?

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection
Section "Module"
EndSection
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "Xinerama" "off"
EndSection .....

I have tried a few different configurations in Xorg but I don't have a great understanding of the configuration files so I have broken it a few times. I have read through this guide [URL]. It's a guide based on the work around for multiple Nvidia GPUs with a six monitor configuration while still being able to run visual effects without a hitch. But I didn't continue after reading "If you're prepared to use ATI cards, and therefore deal with their drivers, a better option might be to buy an Eyefinity card." Since that is based on the drivers back then I figure maybe it's possible with ATI drivers now. I'm sticking to Ubuntu this time around there is no doubt there so I would really like to get my third monitor working.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Turn Off Monitor / Screen?

Jun 20, 2011

how to turn off your laptop screen in Ubuntu using a script/command, but none seem to have worked for me except one.

after digging around, I found the following suggestions:

1. xset dpms force off or xset dpms force suspend

This didn't work for many people, nor did it work for me, as the monitor would just turn on again after a few seconds. The second other suggestion I found to make this "stick was:

2. sleep 1; xset dpms force off
or sleep 1; xset dpms force suspend

This worked for some people, by delaying the monitor off function by one second, but it did not work for me, as the monitor would turn on again by itself after one minute exactly. Maybe those who thought this was the solution just walked away and never really found out their monitor plays sneak-peak with them. The next solution i found digging around was supposed to really make the monitor stay powered off:

3. sleep 1; && xset dpms force off
or sleep 1; && xset dpms force suspend

But this didn't work either; what a disappointment, and it also made my CPU and HDD freak out for a while while my monitor was off. So after some more digging around, I came up with the following: (and I don't remember where i got this, whether it was from here or elsewhere on the internet, but if it is your creation, please contact me and I'll edit the post to give you credit)

4. create a file and save as something like Monitor_off.sh in a folder of your preference with the following in it:

---------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/python
import time
import subprocess
from Xlib import X

[Code]....

Then just go to: System>Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts and assign a Keyboard combination shortcut to call and initiate the script. I chose "<Ctrl>+M" because it's easy to remember.

Make sure to disable any same keyboard shortcuts you may have in Compiz to avoid conflicts.

This final script just worked perfectly for me. And the Monitor just stays off until I shake the mouse or press a key on the keyboard, and my CPU and HDD don't rev up like a Harley. This final solution seems to be working for everyone of my friends without a glitch.
