I just installed openSUSE for the first time. I customized the installation by removing unwanted software during setup, but unfortunately I must have removed something needed because when I open the main menu using the button in the bottom left corner there is the search bar missing. Which software package do I need to install to get it back?
Edit: I am using Gnome btw
squeeze with Gnome installed, but "Search for files" is missing in the mainenu under Places.

When I try to open some file, including directories, "Open with..." window appears.
I changed the kde desktop layout to Search and Launch on an 11.3 64-bit machine and lost the ability to bring up a right-click menu on the desktop, also tried it on an 11.3 32 bit machine and experienced the exact same thing how I can solve this even if it means reverting to the default layout? I suppose I could delete and re-create the user's /home but I'm wondering if there's a way to solve this without resorting to that On the one machine I've put 11.4 on so far it's using the search and launch layout with absolutely no problems at all and finding it very handy
the 11.4 machine I'm using this layout on actually logs onto the 11.3 64 bit machine I first had the problem with via nis and an nfs /home export For the user it's working fine under I set the search and launch layout from the 11.4 machine, the user I'm getting the problem with on the 64-bit machine (nis/nfs server) was set on the server itself. The 11.3 32 bit machine however, I disabled nis and nfs so that it would use local logons and /home only so it seems to be an issue with 11.3 itself and regardless of cpu architecture

View 3 Replies View RelatedOnly "Favourites", "Run Command" and "Leave" is shown on the classic KDE menu, same thing when switching to Launcher Menu Style. Missing Applications and everything else. File associations is not working. Double clicking any type of file it asks to install the program and the known applications menu is empty.
I tried to add a new user, same problem with that. I also noticed that when running Chrome it asks to be the default web browser each time even when I say yes.
I have not been messing with anything, I suspect it happened during a update, but I got the exact same repositories on 2 other x64 machines where there is no problem.
I'm using KDE 4.6.0 from the factory repository.
I tried to reinstall some KDE4 packages without any luck.
I do not want to reinstall the entire system or downgrade KDE.

Since certainly half a year I have to add the vga=0x317 parametere at the end of the root parameter in the menu.lst file after each upgrade of the kernel and also recently after upgrading from 11.1 to 11.3. Without this, the splash screen is not shown on my HP Pavilion laptop.

The openSUSE 11.3 dvd for x86 now only gives a "system rescue" option which leads to command line directl. Where have been "the repair the installed system" tools? How can we access them now? View 1 Replies View RelatedI just loaded KNE 10.4 onto my Dell Mini and I'm trying to get it configured. Some apps that I have installed using Synaptic (Kpackage seems pretty useless, even aside from the fact that the package names are illegible) are not showing up in the Search and Launch, and I would also like to add an additional category and add some items to the favorites list at the top of the page.
Right clicking does not seem to provide any options to change what used to be the menus, and middle clicking puts strange little yellow boxes at the bottom of the screen. (I haven't figured out how to make those go away.What config files hold the data I want to update? Are they not under ~/.kde for some reason?
When I search using Places -> Search for Files..., there is an extra directory that shows up in the "Look in folder:" menu. This directory (jim) is unwanted and doesn't appear in the general Gnome menus (such as Places). The attached image of a screenshot shows what I mean.
I cannot figure out how to remove it in the search menu. Perhaps it was put there because I frequently search in that directory. Whatever the case, I'd like to get rid of it. I understand that this isn't the biggest computer problem ever posted in a forum. Nonetheless, I'd really like to hear how to remove that blasted directory.
I've created an application and I'd like to add it to the Launcher. I've tried using Main Menu, but it still doesn't show up when I search for it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately far for all unicode characters can be displayed in Fedora by default, (much less than in M$ Wnd). There is a tool that aim to find and install missing fonts when an non-displayable character appears, but it starts mainly when I accidentally open non-text file in terminal and never when a web-page I open in Mozilla Firefox (or Konqueror) contains such kind of characters. So, I see a rectangle with hexadecimal number of character in it (or simply empty rectangle in case of Konqueror) and don't know if there is a easy way to see it by installing missing font automatically (or manually at last) for range of this character or a way to install complete font collection to display all unicode characters from all ranges.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded to 11.04 and really like it so far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I had no issues apart from a broken Emerald which I removed (and installed compiz-gnome and then made gtk-window-decorator the default, which fixed Unity segfaulting on Emerald).
My problem now is that when I use the Unity dash to search for something, it takes a while to search and then finds nothing. I'm pretty sure I should have things like "text editor", "gimp", "update manager", so I would think this is some manner of bug.
In addition to that, the following buttons don't do anything if I click on them:
- Media Apps
- Internet Apps
- More Apps
- Find Files
I have accidentally deleted the Top Menu Panel - Fedoera 14, Gnome 2.
Is there a way to restore it?
I now just have access to the Desktop (Computer, Home, and Trash) and the bottom panel.
Applications - Places - System When i click on system the menu comes up but shouldn't there be icons beside like 'preferences' and 'administration'

I've read some threads as to how to do this and came to know that we need to skip installation of LILO in slackware installation and an entry for slackware in the menu.lst file of grub. View 3 Replies View Relatedi have an old p3 compqa desktop install 10.04.2 lts on it. install went ok. set to autologin. when it does so, gnome starts but there is no bottom or top menu bar. keyboard shortbut for terminal works and keyboard shortcut alt-f1 for running programs works but i would like to get the top menu bar or at least know a shortbut to get to network preference because i can't seem to get the machine configured for net access...

View 8 Replies View Related1. I can't find the Konqueror file manager in Kde menu. I can of course add it, but I'm wondering if it's by design or if it's a problem specific to my installation.
2. When I set my plasma desktop to folder view, activity, (whatever, I still don't understand how do folder views and activities relate, it's the most f****d up design ever) to get a full screen desktop (like in Kde 3), and my taskbar panel is at the top of the screen,then I get an "impression" of the default desktop widget behind my background (tried both wallpaper and a solid color). It seems to go away when I move panel to bottom of screen (then can move back to top and it's ok).See attached image.
3. Can't find a way to change color of Title bars. I'm right now using Oxygen widget style with Oxygen theme. I can't live with these gray bars which are even the same color for both active and inactive Tile bars (design idiocy of highest caliber IMO). Changing the color seemed to work when using Plastik just fine.
I have Ubuntu "Karmic Koala" with Gnome, but "Search for Files" is missing in the main menu.

and it works fine.
However I would like to put it into the context menu of the Nautilus File Browser.
When I select it e.g. for folder /home/peter
then the start base directory should be obviously set AUTOMATICALLY to /home/peter
In KDE the main application menu had this really nice and useful search box that I would type the name of the application and press enter to open it. Now that I changed to ubuntu with gnome, there's no search box at the Applications menu by default. And I cannot find anyway to add it anywhere.
Is there any way to add a KDE style search box to the Gnome "Applications" menu?
