May 18, 2011I just installed openSUSE for the first time. I customized the installation by removing unwanted software during setup, but unfortunately I must have removed something needed because when I open the main menu using the button in the bottom left corner there is the search bar missing. Which software package do I need to install to get it back?
Edit: I am using Gnome btw

Jul 20, 2011I have noticed that the files and folders search in Unity, only shows up those files which have been amended (or possibly just opened) since the install.
i was wondering if there was a way i could have the search index (or something vaguely equivalent) all the files on my machine. This is especially important given that i reinstall the OS every six months on a new distribution cycle, copying all my old files across.
Without being able to see my old files the search is pretty much reduced to a recent history search.

Aug 23, 2010Unfortunately far for all unicode characters can be displayed in Fedora by default, (much less than in M$ Wnd). There is a tool that aim to find and install missing fonts when an non-displayable character appears, but it starts mainly when I accidentally open non-text file in terminal and never when a web-page I open in Mozilla Firefox (or Konqueror) contains such kind of characters. So, I see a rectangle with hexadecimal number of character in it (or simply empty rectangle in case of Konqueror) and don't know if there is a easy way to see it by installing missing font automatically (or manually at last) for range of this character or a way to install complete font collection to display all unicode characters from all ranges.

For instance, running find . | grep terms.htmlgives my expected result while locate terms.html doesn't even though locate gets updated db - it might have to do with that it's an USB stick the file is on?

Sounds simple but I've not found what I'm looking for. The bottom line is that I am wanting to clean up a file association in mime. I would have had more success if I were searching for this under XP. I must be doing something wrong.
Since I trialled a commercial company's map product under Wine somewhere in my system is still their name. Any gpx file I choose to download and the company's name appears in properties. Ggx files are also associated with Wine whilst an untainted PC in the house just has "Browse" as an "open with" option.
First things first, how do I find and delete this commercial company's name totally from any part of my system? How do I find their name in one or more of my files?

I want to find *.jgw files that have 123 in line 5 and 456 in line 6. I first thought grep could do this for me but grep 123 *.jgw|grep 456 finds only files where 123 and 456 are on the same line. Is there a sed trick for this?

Jun 23, 2011Is there really no way of having with a GUI an indexed file search by filename (not contents etc) which gives a detailed list? Great big icons as a "result" is no good to me, I want "details" that I can then click on to either open or copy etc. I tried the totally useless "Tracker" and Zeitgeist in my 11.04 is no better. There is a fantastic product in the win environment called everything.exe which does exactly what I want. I cannot be alone in this type of requirement. It has to have a GUI.

Mar 7, 2011I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.
