OpenSUSE :: LibreOffice 3 Causing Display Corruption -?
Apr 14, 2011
I have 11.4 with kde 4.6, all up to date via YAST. Radeon driver, legacy ATI display hardware. LibreOffice is latest from the Stable:11.4 repo.
When I open LO, it causes the desktop to break up - diagonal stripes of blocks, and garbage (offset blocks) form all mouse movements from there until kdm restarted.
I restart by switching to F1 console, init 3, the init 5 as root. I can't seem to find any useful messages or logs.

Anyone ever see anything like this on bootup?
[url]
The display freezes/hangs, but the kernel is still kind of responsive because I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and after many seconds it reboots.
I can get it (Slackware 13.0) to boot this same kernel just fine from CD; it's only the normal bootup, after the install finishes, that this happens.
I enabled netconsole so I could see the messages, shown below, but there are no errors reported. The display corrupts and hangs at the "TCP cubic registered" message which appears to be unrelated to anything video-wise.

This is a strange problem, 2 Fedora 11 machines, both Dell's. On machine A, remote desktop is okay. On Machine B, remote desktop display is corrupt/unusable.
However, prior to upgrading to Fedora 11, both machines had Fedora 10, and, remote desktop on Machine A was corrupt and Machine B was okay.
Any idea what happened? Why did the upgrade fix one and break the other? Both machines where upgraded with Pre-upgrade. The two machines are in to separate locations, un-related to each other.

Installed Natty a few days ago and everything was working fine. I have a dual head setup with the left monitor rotated Clockwise 90 degrees (AKA rotate left). When I setup the the displays properly, instead of just cloning, I noticed a problem, making Unity unusable. When I apply the rotation either in the xorg.conf fle or using xrandr, the display shows a corrupt looking image. When I turn compiz off and use metacity instead it works perfectly fine.
Display Adapter:
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Cedar PRO [Radeon HD 5450]
xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Desktop"
Screen "RightScreen"
Screen "LeftScreen" LeftOf "RightScreen"

When I open a program I get a little welcome screen; as in Gimp or GnuCash Finance Management and as soon as the welcome screen is displayed in the centre of my screen the system goes straight into the program - Great - that's the way I like it!
However, when I go into any of the LibreOffice programs the little welcome screen displays so far over to the right of my screen that it only displays half of the image the other half of the welcome image is off the screen. This "behaviour" in no way affects how the programs work - they work fine! Can I alter how this welcome screen is displayed in the centre?

While trying to boot into the normal user the system aborts the login and tells me that /home does not have write permission.
The login manager gives:
Code:
If I log in as root and do a
Code:
Or to open some files, it works and no problem seems to exist.
All this happened for the first time after running luckybackup to fusion the old files of one home directory under EXT4 with the new files from my notebook (ext3, Opensuse 11.1 KDE3) in order to come to a unified home. But then the system did not boot any more. I tried to change the owner but some files did not have write access (not even as root, "the file does not exist"). So I thought I might have a a file system problem.
So I thought: unmount the /dev/sdb1 and then do a fschk on it. Runs and was perfect. So I did run it with forcing to control inode per inode.
No error.
So I thought: you screwed up the system. I then decided to reinstall OpensSuse11.3 from the scratch and create the same user for home. I formatted the rest (/swap /boot /root) and left only /home. Installation runs brilliantly, all ok, it comes to the login..................

I'm getting some weird corruption on the screen in openSUSE 11.4 or Ubuntu Natty and wondered if anyone has seen this or could offer some suggestions. My config: Athlon XP 2400+, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (R350NH), 1GB RAM, fresh install of either OS. It manifests as evenly spaced columns of discolored pixels, which change as different windows are drawn on the screen. At first I tried compiling the latest radeon drivers from git, but that didn't help. I've also tried nomodeset, x11failsafe, turning off desktop effects, turning off dri/dri2, and nothing seems to help. The corruption appears even if I switch to the vesa driver or fbdev. Any suggestions? This has got me stumped.

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 x64 as a fresh full-install last week. Seems to be running great, up until the last couple days when I installed AVG. Every time I do a avgscan, it runs for 20 to 60 min, and then causes the PC to reboot. The only thing I can find is the following event in the /var/log/messages:
Code:
May 1 11:45:01 linuxbox sntp[7653]: Started sntp
May 1 11:45:59 linuxbox kernel: [38429.349995] iTCO_wdt: Unexpected close, not stopping watchdog!
May 1 11:46:00 linuxbox kernel: [38430.111688] PM: Marking nosave pages: 000000000009d000 - 0000000000100000
[Code].....
I get this result every time I try to do a virus scan. I also have seen this result once when doing a large scp transfer from another Suse box. The AVG log just terminates and gives no warnings as to what's going wrong.
Are there any other logs I can check out to try to troubleshoot this further???

I've been having trouble lately with firefox freezing. For awhile I couldn't figure out what was causing it as it seemed random. But I think I narrowed down the problem to the mplayer plugin. Whenever I go to a site that has streaming video, the mplayer plugin would start reading the stream, but then display "stopped". Now sometimes when it does this firefox would freeze, but sometimes it wouldn't freeze till I start mousing over my bookmark tabs, then it would freeze my entire desktop. I can move my mouse but not much else. I can do a ctrl-alt-backspace to reload the xserver. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, can some help me troubleshoot this. I've removed and then re-installed firefox and the myplayer plugin; deleted my .mozilla directory; changed profiles. Is there anything else I can do?
Here are the package details:
Code:
Repository: @System
Name: MozillaFirefox
Version: 3.6.15-0.2.2
Arch: x86_64

I am using openSUSE 11.4 with this monitor [URL]. I use this PC mainly as a HTPC and also for internet surfing, checking email ....etc.
- One problem that I have been facing since I migrated from CRT to LCD is difficulty in reading small
- Fonts that you cant zoom. Like for example the fonts on the dialog boxes or menus of some
- Applications. I see a kind of white glare surrounding the fonts making it "hazy" & therefore causing difficulty in reading.
Is there a way to improve the situation?

i've been able to narrow down a freezing issue on my laptop, down to NetworkManager when i have a cifs share mounted in fstab.removing the cifs mount, or using 'ifup' method appears to fix the issue.the problem is when my laptop resumes from sleep, and when using NetworkManager with cifs share, then i get a 20second freeze when using the launcher while the network sorts itself out. this happens on either wifi or wired connections. this freeze only occurs when using the Launcher for the first time after resume. if i dont use the launcher then everything is fine untill i do (ie: i have network access and desktop shortcuts work fine)

Any other documents - no problem! odt, xls - any! but not DBF.. And this problem is only on OpenSUSE 11.4 and only in Libre/Open Office! Any other programms can open and write DBF files to smb/cifs shares.

whenever I try to include a SVG picture into a ODT document (e.g. in Writer) I get a "Graphics filter not found" error message. I'm using the "Insert->Picture->From File" menu. I still have .odt files from OpenOffice in 11.3 around that contain SVG cliparts, so it used to work and SVG support is one of the feature highlights in LibreOffice.

I've had a problem with libreoffice - it won't open files. That is,File/Open doesn't bring up a dialog box. File/New works and so does using a filename on the command line when starting libreoffice. Now there's good news and bad news. The good news is that with help from some libreoffice-users folks, I now know what caused this and I have a workaround. The bad news is that it's a bug in Libreoffice and I need some help testing other versions, please. So here's the steps to reproduce:
(1) Login to a Gnome session (KDE may also work, dunno)
(2) Start libreoffice
(3) Select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
(4) Observe in that page a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
(5) Ensure the checkbox is blank (not selected)
(6) Save settings and check that File/Open pops up a dialog box.
(7) Quit libreoffice and log out of the session
(8) Login to an LXDE session
(9) Start libreoffice
(10) Select File/Open
*(11) Check whether a dialog box appears
(12) If not, select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
*(13) Check whether there is a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
If your system does NOT open a dialog box in step 11 and does NOT have a checkbox in step 13, you are seeing the same bug as me.I'm using opensuse 11.3.

I received some M$ Power Points files and cannot open then. One file was from Power Points 2010, and another saved with the option 2000-2010. These were rejected by Impress with the failure report "Version Incompatibility. Incorrect file version". When a file was saved with the option Power Point 95, Impress tried to open it but when RAM useable ramped up to > 1GB, Impress automatically shut down. The only other information wrt the files is that its highly likely they contain graphics generated with M$Visio. Has anyone had similar experiences? Are there any work arounds?

I've just installed Opensue 11.4 (gnome-desktop) on my machine. The problem is that, if I open a database-form with libreoffice base, no navigation-bar appeares. The option "navigation" from the view-menu is not active. The database uses the built-in HSQLDB in single user mode. Navigation via libreoffice-basic is possible and I can see the first record - just it is not possible to navigate manually.

how (if possible) to prevent LibreOffice from using the KDE theme the rest of the apps are using? I like my KDE theme but it's a bit on the dark side. It's fine for Dolphin and KMail and stuff but it is not very suitable for LibreOffice. I would like to use LO with it's default colors, if possible.
