OpenSUSE :: Kde4 + Openbox + Tilda - No Transparency For Tilda
May 15, 2010
under openbox session, tilda's transparency works. Under kde, with kwin, tilda it is also transparent, but if I use openbox as windowmanager in kde4, there is no transparency for tilda. Somebody knows why? (by tilda, I mean the quake like, drop down terminal )

The recent yum update (at 17/4/2010 based on my /var/log/yum.log) has broken Tilda from regaining the input focus after application switching. Only "F12" (the key binding I used to popup/hide Tilda) still works. But now after the losing the initial application input focus, it does not able to regaining it back.

I recently (re)installed Tilda, but I can no longer activate it via the keybinding I set, nor the default. Actually, I'm not entirely sure its running right now, though it should be.My questions: How do I get Tilda back?I am experimenting with a very spartan system, and I was also wondering how I can invoke common GUI apps from the terminal screen (not running within X) such as xfce settings, control panels, Abiword, Firefox, etc... That is, call them from the pure (non-graphical) terminal and have them come up on the X display next door.

I have been using Tilda for a while to execute a quick command and I love it. However I wanted to customize it a little so it looks nicer. I figured out you needed to enter tilda -C and then start configuring.
I did this and changed a couple settings such as size and colors and whatnot. However when I closed out and tried it nothing happened. Confused, I opened it up again and after poking around I saw that the top said Tilda 2 settings. Poking around more I found the keyboard shortcut was for f2 when I usually use f1 for tilda. So I exit out and hit f2. Another tilda came up(one already running) with all the settings I had configured.
Now this wouldn't be too much of a problem but I noticed that the second tilda will not show up unless I open the config screen first. After I do this then I can open both of them up with f1 and f2. It would be extremely inconvenient to have to do this everytime I bootup.

is it possible (and how) to create keyboard shortcut/binding that would give window-focus back to Tilda terminal? Currently, it is necessary to LMB-click inside Tilda (or at least drag mouse-cursor over Tilda) to resume typing.

This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:
Code:
own_window_colour black
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_130
own_window_type override
own_window yes
I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.

I've recently installed openSUSE again and on first boot the kickoff laucher looks like this.
I then proceed to update the system. After I have downloaded and installed all the updates from yast online update I then restart and when I boot in the kickoff laucher has lost it's transparency?
I don't have any extra repos added apart from the defaults when installed. And I'm using the Intel graphics driver. Is there perhaps a desktop effect module being turned off?

I'm experiencing a wierd bug. Been having it for some time now. I haven't posted about it before since its only been annoying, but not really setting me back. And I have trouble defining and explaining the bug. Today it crossed the line into actual annoyance.
The bug occurs when I'm writing, using the keyboard on my laptop. Both when I write in browsers, like when writing this post, and when I write in openoffice. So its not limited to one program. In webbrowsers what happens is that all of a sudden the browser loads the previous page in the tab. Like I told it to go one step back. In OpenOffice something similar happens. The curser jumps up in the document.
I used to have this bug when touchpad-tapping was enabled. I have a habit of drumming my thumbs on the touchpad when typing. Therefore I've disabled tapping on the touchpad. The bug is reocurring, however I have not found a way to reproduce it. It might be a key combination I accidentally hit when typing away, but I'm not sure.

I've been experiencing a strange problem with Plasma locking up. Running system monitor it shows the KDE4 process using 20% CPU time, and Plasma around 10-15%. This seems way too much since on my six year old Laptop the cpu load of both processes is barely noticeable. My Laptop is an old single core 3000+ AMD Athlon 64, while my Desktop has a Quad core Xeon 2.33Ghz chip, so the fact that the KDE4/Plasma system load is many times higher than on the Laptop, indicates something is wrong.
I'm not sure what else to look for troubleshooting wise, any suggestions? *Actually, thinking about it, the KDE4 process is timing out one CPU core, which indicates to me something is really not right.

I am hitting a wall here - with the new 4.4 installed and working well, the one thing that is killing me is not being able to read the active taskbar item or the plasma peanut menu (see screenshot. You can see that the firefox and gimp are "active" and too dark to read, while kwrite is inactive and readable. They are BOTH too dark, and I cannot seem to find the option that controls those color elements.

I got autostart working on 11.2/gnome, but I've switch to kde4.3.1. Duncan on the kde list suggested to manually save a session, but in the session manager there's not a clue how to manually save a session. In gnome I wrote a shell script to start kinternet, but the script has to start after smpppd. That script starts too soon in kde4.The reasoon kinternet doesn't start with the "restart on login" box, is a kde3 app. I have already tried kinternet --kicker, but apparetly kicker starts before smpppd. The script I wrote starts kinternet but with this error:
Error - KInternet Connection to local and remote server refused. Maybe smpppd is not running or you are not member of the group "dialout". Also check the server settings in the dialog "Various Settings". OK
The error to the calling shell looks like this:

In order to switch between dual head and single head, I need to log out of KDE4 and log in again immediately, which is annoying. How can I avoid that?
Is it possible to restart X without quitting KDE?
At work, when my laptop is docked, I use a dual head configuration (internal + 1 external screen), but at home I use the laptop without a second screen.
Using the binary nvidia driver, the laptop always selects the correct configuration upon booting (TwinView), but not upon hot-plugging.
I would just like to suspend the laptop and continue before/after commuting.

I've been running KDE4 with Suse 11.2 for about a year or so now, with no problems. Yesterday, the background to my screen suddenly went black. Open windows were unaffected, but I could see my theme, the task manager, etc. I couldn't open any programs other than the ones already open (and ones that they launch). This problem was system-wide, in that it affects all accounts on my machine.I thought I'd solved the problem after discussion with someone by email, by forcing KDE to recreate itself. I did this by
mv ~/.kde4 ~/oldkde4
then relogging. This, in itself, seemed to make matters worse, so I went
mv ~/.kde4 ~/newkde4
mv ~/oldkde4 ~/.kde4
and relogged. To my surprise, everything worked thereafter for a few hours.
I think this was coincidence, because, after a few hours, the same thing happened and the "fix" didn't work anymore.I checked .xsession-error and it says
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started.
sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD
INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method).

I'm using the system system monitor applet, and ksysguard, with lm sensors to monitor CPU / GPU temps and fan speeds. Works great, and I love the system monitor applets fuel gauge style display. However, I don't see any way to configure maximum temp thresholds in either of these. It appears that ksensors previously allowed the configuration of temp alerts, but this appears to be a pretty old school app at this point. I am surprised that ksysguard and system-monitor don't have alerting functions. Am I just missing this, or is there another applet that is currently providing this functionality?

Obviously, due to dependencies,
version 11.4-82.2 of
kdebase4-runtime-branding-openSUSE
kdebase4-workspace-branding-openSUSE
kdelibs4-branding-openSUSE
kdm-branding-openSUSE
will not install.
64bit version works great for me. Only hic-cup noticed is mouse cursor theme seems inconsistent after reboot unless Oxygen White or Black selected.
