CentOS 5 :: Yum Install Xterm Does Not Make Sure Xauth Is Installed
Jan 21, 2009I was having problems getting xterm to work via ssh -Y and the problem was that xauth was not installed when I did yum install xterm

View 1 RepliesI just installed CentOS 5.2, and would like for xterm to be my default terminal instead of the gnome-terminal. I was able to do this on a RHEL4 system and Fedora 9, but I can't figure out how to do it in CentOS.
Here's the output of uname:
Linux 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 #1 SMP Tue Dec 16 11:57:43 EST 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Everything worked fine for several updates to the final system, now suddenly when trying to login dropping out at runlevel 5 and login. When doing login the system starts as root with startx but not as user. This is for me a permission problem. Only: I did not change the permissions and I did not log into as a root-X system. I just did set the permissions in yast to secure. Nothing else. The system complains:
[Code]...
on boot I got a message that (part of) level 5 was skipped, and I ended up on console. So I tried startx but get this message (probably the reason boot failed also):
xauth: file /home/kostas/.serverauth.3396 does not exist
Fatal server error:Cannot move old log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old"
consult the The X.Org Foundation support at X.Org Wiki - Home for help.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

Unless there is some better way to quickly open xterm?

View 1 Replies View RelatedStart xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.
i have fluxbox and i need to know how to copy things in xterm and paste them outside of xterm.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use a Windows computer to remotely operate two Centos 5.4 boxes over the Internet. For text or console work I use putty which does an excellent job. But sometimes I need to run a graphical app such as xterm. For that, I use an X Server such as Xming or MobaXterm. Until today, that was working reasonably well. On one Centos, it still does. But on the other one, I started getting an error message that I have not seen before:
[root ]# /usr/bin/system-config-network connect /tmp/.X11-unix/X0: No such file or directory The application 'system-config-network-gui' lost its connection to the display localhost:10.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. [root ]# xterm connect /tmp/.X11-unix/X0: No such file or directory X connection to localhost:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). [root ]#

I've newly installed Lenny and I find that xterm doesn't have tabs or pretty colours. Vim is also colourless. Is this a conscious effort by Debian to strip back the install to it's most utilitarian? Or am I using the wrong versions of each app?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to this forum and pretty new to the Linux world. I'm currently working for someone and learning this as I go along and we want to be able to set up a machine so that we can display some kind of internet browser in a type of kiosk mode (without the fullscreen) on the gdm login page.
I've been able to find a browser to do that but we cannot edit how the gdm login screen boots to include the browser. I was told to try to see if I could remotely access said machine to start the browser on the same display as the gdm login which happens to use display :0. When I tried experimenting with xclock first, it would not let me run it on the same display short of me using xhost + command. I was told to try to use the xauth application to create my own authority file and allow permission but I don't know how to do this. I've tried several different combinations I've found on other forums and none seem to have worked.
I have installed squeeze with KDE. I have xterm bugs, this last kill alone with command apt-get, the xterm is killed! There are another xterm client that I install under KDE?
>> apt-get install another xterm ........
Since this morning, I'm having a problem which symptoms are similar to this one : Cannot Login, KDE won't start - OpenSUSE 11.3, but it affects only one user.Everything was fine yesterday, but now, everytime this one user tries to start his KDE session, the screen goes black for a few seconds before coming back to the login screen.
I tried the following :
- I installed LXDE and tried to log in : same problem
- I tried to log in Xterm : no problem
- I created a new user and tried to log in : no problem, be it KDE or LXDE
- I cleared /tmp : same problem. My /home partition is 98% full but still has 2-3GB available. The / partition is 45% full with 28GB left.
[code]....
From what I've gathered so far, it seems the problem is user-specific, graphical session-sepcific, but not desktop-specific (since both KDE and freshly installed LXDE fail in the same way)... and now I don't know what else to try.
My setup :
OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Linux 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-07-21 02:17:24 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Here is my setup:
Machine A (fedora, gateway on remote network)
Machine B (fedora on local network)
Machine C (Vista on local network).
I want to connect to machine A from C and run graphical apps on it. I figured that installing a vnc client will be easier then X server (last time I tried X server on windows it did not end well). To ensure security, I vnc into a local linux box (machine B) and then ssh over to the remote box. When I ssh (with the -X param) into A from B, everything works great including the graphical apps. However, when I vnc into B from C and then ssh into A, I get the following message:
Warning: No Xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 fowrard If I then try to run a graphical app I get cannot open display:
localhost:11.0
why does X forwarding work directly and not through vnc?
No sure exactly what the problem is here? I am trying to get a X app running from a remote site on my desktop. I am using this proceedure:xhost +remote host xauth on local host the get 'Cookie'.
scp Cookie to remote host
xauth merge Cookie into .Xauthority
ssh to remote.
export DISPLAY=local host:0
xfig
xfig fails with "Error: Can't open display: local:0"
If I start another X using '-ac' ( not authinaction) and put to local:1 , all is well.
I've just installed xterm, ant trying to run it from my windows machine using ssh. I have X11Forwarding yes on /etc/ssh/sshd_config when I use, MobaXterm, np, I can use xterm after I log ssh -X xxx
but when I use Cygwin, and do ssh -X xxx, and then xterm, I have: xterm XT error : Can't open display: xterm: Display is not set
I have a xterm which can have 256 colors. How can I configure the prompt colors and ls output colors to take advantages of the 256 color values?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using exmh as my mail reader for years. It's written in tcl/tk and uses the tk send facility to communicate with a background process. This communication depends on properly configured Xauthority. After upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 I get X server insecure (must use xauth-style authorization)I've removed and re-installed tcl8.4 and exmh to make sure it's not a package problem. The XAUTHORITY env variable is set up properly. xauth shows the proper cookie:xauth> listjohn/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 9d2c3ae970c352a0d21159190d9e5530Access control is enabled.I'm at a loss where/how to proceed. I need to get this working, it's not reasonable at this stage to switch to a different mail client.

I've got an install of CentOS 5.3 in a VM which was installed without X or Gnome.I've added X (yum groupinstall 'X Window System') and Gnome (yum groupinstall 'GNOME Desktop Environment) and can now run startx no problem. However on boot I get a command line login rather than the graphical login screen one normally gets if Gnome is included at install time. What do I need to do to get the graphical login after boot?

I can use some programs such as OpenOffice.org, but I cannot use a terminal or a web browser. The next thing I try is to log in to a failsafe terminal session. When I try this I get perhaps the most worrisome error so far:Cannot find "xterm" to start a failsafe session.
