View 2 Replies View RelatedSo in an environment where I have 40+ sets of completely unique sets of logon credentials. The only way I've been able to manage this is by keeping them in a hidden and heavily encrypted text file in my home dir.Would like to hear alternatives to this approach if there are any, BTW. Right now I have a script that automates the process of un-encrypting the file, launching an editor and then clean-up with shred -u after editing and re-encrypting.
What bugs me is the interim where I have the file in an un-encrypted state on my drive. It doesn't seem necessary. I have a view script that allows me to see what's in the file without saving it to the drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEven though I have been using Linux for quite some time now (as a private web server), now that I want to create a new web server, I am willing to know exactly what is the philosophy of Ubuntu regarding package version management.
Let's use phpBB as an example, as I used it on my first server, and I intend to use it again on my new one. phpBB is currently in version 3.0.7 In the official Ubuntu software repository, phpBB is currently in version 3.0.4 Now I am facing a philosophical question: should I simply download the official version and simply deal with it, or is it more 'the Ubuntu philosophy' to stick to the 'supported' version, 3.0.4, even though, this version is a year and a half old?
I know that Ubuntu is based on Debian, which is itself a very secured Linux, which will only offer validated versions of software. And as such, man should not expect to always see the latest versions available. However, I am now wondering, is it better, security-wise, to stick to the 'validated' 3.0.4 or to go use the original 3.0.7? Because as all the holes of 3.0.4/5/6 are now known, I am not quite sure that sticking to 3.0.4 is for the best.
Now it came to my mind that the philosophy might simply be to use APT to get the latest valid version, and then to simply use the internal upgrade tool of phpBB to upgrade to 3.0.7. But as the phpBB as it is available for Ubuntu is really modified, in terms of files being splitted in many different folders, will the automated upgrade work?
And what will happen when Ubuntu will upgrade their version? What happens if they upgrade to a lower than latest version? Or to the latest (not even sure this would happen one day)? phpBB has an integrated upgrade feature, but what about all this for a software that doesn't have such a tool (MediaWiki for instance)?
I would like to create a directory public_html/archive that is a mirror of public_html/images, except that deletions in the images directory don't cause corresponding deletions in archive.
I was going to manage all of this in code, but then I figured, maybe the system can handle it for me in a robust way.
Note that the website will reference archive in real time, so it has to be an instant mirror and not something done nightly, etc.
As a strategy for learning linux I have decided to adopt using a lean windows based approach. I want to focus on command line machine system, network basics, and file management knowledge. In other words find out how desktop manager does it's business, so I know how to master my machine, but by and large once I have made my choices, leave it alone to do just that.
I figure I should know how applications are internally configured etc., but I also figure an apps GUI and config choices should take care of installations, and program usage as in M$ windows. Surely taking care of an applications dependencies are the responsibility of the developer, are they not?
I am working my way through "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0)" right now for an overall viewpoint. Can anyone suggest a specific source for a point by point explanation of the command basis of a generalised "desktop management" application (KDE,LXDE)? Better yet would be if it had some parallel comparison of the varied approaches taken by different distributions of linux.
A secondary question, is that allowed? Up to a certain point in Ms windows, a thorough knowledge of DOS 6.xx would theoreticaly enable one to more or less duplicate the actions of the windows overlay. Is there a basic distribution (or subset in all of them maybe?) of linux that would be consistent with that paradigm? What would be analogous to DOS batch files, or GM-Basic? I'm trying to install KDE 4,4 on my Netbook, Asus Eee PC 1201n. I've just done a clean install, instlaled my graphics drivers and now trying to upgrade to KDE 4.4. This is the message I get when trying to use the 1Click installer from the OpenSuse site. "System Management is locked by the application with pid 3249"

View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing gnome terminal (Ubuntu 10.10), is there a way to execute the default application associated to a file type, only by typing its name, as it is possible with Windows ?
For example, say I create a mime type associated to every file with the pattern *.abc. Lets say I associate this file type to application 'my_app'.
If I have file 'my_file.abc' in current folder, what I want is that when I enter only 'my_file.abc' at the prompt, it executes 'my_app' feeding it with 'my_file.abc' as first argument. (assuming of course 'my_app' is in the path)
I know this is possible in GUI gnome. But is it possible to do it too in shell command? Let say if i type this in shell:

then it will open gnome-editor in nautilus which open file.txt. gnome is the desktop manager. nautilus is the explorer windows in gnome. gnome-editor is one like notepad in MS windows.
The Linux File system uses the file path notation to abstract how data is accessed. Path really must be an environmental variable for the applcication that converts the path name to an inode so what is this application/Daemons name?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAlright, I just wanted to see if this would even work, so I installed Ubuntu Lucid Linx 10.04 on a 2001 Sony Vaio with 1.7 Ghz. Intel P4 processor and, yes you're reading this correctly, only 256 MB of PC2100 Ram. I dumped in my own PCI wlan card and 64 MB Radeon 9000 Pro AGP card, then I did the installation.
Although I already ordered 2 mem chips (512 MB each) for this system which will max it out, I also created a 5 GB swap partition since I figured that this would greatly enhance the installation and consequent usage thereafter. Now mind you, the installation of 32bit Lucid worked like a charm. Slower than normal, but like a charm. Wifi is working and even the 3D desktop settings are working in advanced mode. BUT the system is just way too slow to react to the mouse and keyboard. I'm certain that the lack of memory has a lot to do with that although I was secretly hoping that the huge swap file would help to make a big perfomance difference. So here now my questions:
1. The swap file doesn't really appear to have made any difference at all. How come?
2. If I wanted to "downgrade" to Xubuntu, how would I accomplish this?
3. Would it be a better idea to just start over with an installation of Crunchbang instead?
I'm trying to get this system working for a relative who's never had a computer before. Whatever I end up with on this machine has to be as simple as possible to use while maintaining some semblence of decent perfomance. I'm sure before too long they'll want to enhance their desktop looks/theme as well so consideration needs to be given to that too. Your suggestions and comments would be appreciated. Again, Ubuntu Lucid runs just fine, although really really slow. Internet is no problem.
since yesterday when I open up an explorer style window, say I browsed folders in Gnome for each folder it opens a new window. However; when I go to change it so it does it in the same window either through edit properties or system/preferences/file management it does not open and instead a bugzilla window opens as it crashes (taking my desktop with it until it refreshes)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI setup a file server using Ubuntu Server edition following the guid by Xam @ [URL]. With only a few exceptions to minor tweaks the guide worked perfectly. The difference is I use a USB terabyte for data storage but that's not an issue. It works FANTASTIC right now. I can manage files from any computer in the house (vista xp linuxmint, ubuntu etc).
The USB is mounted as /dev/sdb1 /media/store ntfs 0 0 in my fstab file. It's sharing the root directory of the disk and users have access to the entire thing. Now that it's all working, I want to know if anyone knows a way I can not let the entire disk be shared but only select folders off the root for example /media/store/Music or /media/store/Videos.
I would like to share some files with my customers. I would like to be able to give them different passwords with different rights. I would like to know which customers have downloaded the files, how many times and from wich ip. I would like to let the customer download a file just a number of times.(optional) I would like to be able to upload from web (optional) And with a polite presentation to the customer.Does it exists? I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...
Whenever i click on an icon in the Places pull down menu (except Computer, Network, Connect To Server and Search For Files) nothing happens except I get Ktorrent popping up and claiming it cant open the selected Drive or Folder because it is not a valid torrent file. Which is fair enough, 'cos its not a torrent. Its the entry for my Desktop in a pull down menu in my O/S, and it does this even when I haven't been near Ktorrent in the previous hundred clicks of the mouse, or if Ktorrent is not running. If i un-install Ktorrent, the error message changed, but the correct windows did not open when asked from the Places pull down, and the error returns when its re installed- well, tried it once, in a very basic fashion through the software center.
I think the problem has been caused by two containing folders of torrent data files that have become stuck as entrys in the Pllaces menu- cack handed off me folks, was playing with new mouse settings as I was playing with new mouse settings. Problem may also be something to do with the problems I have been having with Ktorrent- it refuses to accept torrent files unless through a magnet link, bringing up the same "parse error- not valid torrent file" error message as comes up from the Places menu, only of course citing the torrent i just tried, when I know for sure the file is valid and operational because Transmission has no problem with it.I really hope someone can help me fix this, as formatting and re-installing will be a real ball ache, as I'm a new user who's spent the last week learning and starting the customization process, and I was just getting to think about backing it all up.System is Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, Pentium quad core, one 250Gb system drive and another larger drive called storage that appears under Media path both SATA2, no DVD drive as connector is in the post.

If you look on the mysql website, the latest community edition is 5.1.50. I suspect the answer might be to do a distribution upgrade via media (i.e.: burn a CD) however was wondering if there's any ways around that?
I'm was wondering if there is such a feature in webmin (or perhaps any other webgui) that would solve the following problem:
I need a few people to disable/enable users in a specific group, any only in that group.
Ex: Employee A logs in to webmin to enable an user account for employee B that is a member of the group "disabled by default".
Employee A are not able to disable/enable any accounts outside the "disabled by default"-group.
Would that be possible in webmin or any other webgui?
