Software :: Unable To Log Into Ubuntu Using Graphical Mode / Enable This?

Aug 6, 2009

I have kubuntu 9.04 installed in my computer and I am normally using a Gnome environment desktop (though I get back to KDE or Xfce if I have any troubles with Gnome)

This afternoon I restarted my computer and since ever I am unable to log in. I press the on button, get to the partition page and select Ubuntu 9.04 and the computer shows the login page

however, once I type in my password, the computer tries to log in but then brings me back to the login page asking for the password again. I have tried to login as Xfce, Gnome, KDE, Failsafe mode and the result is the same. The only way to get through is to login through the terminal, but then I am unable to get back to the graphical mode.

During install it did not ask to remove the ATI driver. no graphical UI. Since all the data where backed up anyway and the original install lacked some partitioning, I did a fresh install. Had some problems with sound, which I could fix via the KDE multimedia "phonon".

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Windows Even From The Graphical Interface

Nov 3, 2010

I am having a very strange problem with GRUB: it refuses to boot from certain partitions, and in a very strange way. This is what I've noticed so far:When using GRUB in the default OpenSUSE 11.3 graphical interface and trying to boot it, GRUB almost always gives me Error Message 16: Inconsistent filesystem structure. The GRUB manual says that "This error is returned by the filesystem code to denote an internal error caused by the sanity checks of the filesystem structure on disk not matching what it expects. This is usually caused by a corrupt filesystem or bugs in the code handling it in GRUB. " I've ran fsck on all the partitions and neither of them has any corruption. When I switch to the non-graphical GRUB window, the message changes to Error Message 18: "Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS".

The GRUB manual says that "This error is returned when a read is attempted at a linear block address beyond the end of the BIOS translated area. This generally happens if your disk is larger than the BIOS can handle (512MB for (E)IDE disks on older machines or larger than 8GB in general). " However, I haven't touched any BIOS settings when the problem started to appear, and the BIOS is brand new anyway so it doesn't have such limits. When I try to boot directly from the command line, it roots to the boot partition just fine, but refuses to load the kernel, giving me the error 16 again.

When I try to boot Windows from the non-graphical GRUB list, it gives me the error 18 again, but it always succeeds when I do all the booting directly from the command line. One time I was able to boot Linux from the command line by using rootnoverify instead of root, but never again since then. One time it didn't boot Windows even from the OpenSUSE graphical interface, error 18 again. Sometimes it boots even Linux just fine, but it happens quite rarely now. The problems started appearing just recently, and without any reason that I could think of. I also ran setup again in order to reinstall GRUB, and it worked for one boot, but not any more...

My partition list is like this:
(hd0,0) Windows 7 boot, NTFS, primary
(hd0,1) Windows 7, NTFS, primary
(hd0,2) Windows XP, NTFS, primary
(hd0,3) Extended
(hd0,4) /root, EXT3, logical
(hd0,5) /home, EXT3, logical
(hd0,6) swap, logical
(hd0,7) /boot, EXT2, logical

OpenSUSE Install :: Kdm Remote Graphical Login Not Working?

I'm pretty sure I've enabled all the things I should have. there a bug?(Incidentally, I had the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 (with Gnome), and eventually found I needed an updated version of gdm. With X tunneled through a PuTTy ssh session I can display individual X windows no probs. Also, a VNC session is rejected out of hand.)

OpenSUSE Install :: Graphical Login Not Implemented In Build Live Cd?

Aug 17, 2010

I am now at my 6th version of my opensuse build and I can't get it to start the graphical login.I am trying my build out on a VirtualBox using the live cd.This is what happens during installation :It will install properly. No error messages at all. I get the (graphical) options screen to select language and screen resolution settings, so far so good.I select the default (top) installation for my opensuse and hit enter. Then I will get the verbose progress and when it's finished, the verbose will ask me for my user name and password. Then I enter those correctly and the verbose will tell me to enjoy.I am then left with a blinking cursor, and don't know what to do next.

This is not what should have happened since in my build I had selected Configuration > Startup > Default runlevel > 5: Graphical loginI can find no reason for this failure since on my Windows system I have tried out several other Linux systems in the same way and never experienced this problem before.During the assembling of my packages I have payed close attention to select all packages required for a graphical login. An other problem is that although I selected the default language for my build to be Dutch, the default language during setup is still English.I hope there is someone who would be kind enough to be prepared to help me out, I am so eager to start trying out my self made OS.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE3 Disappeared From Graphical Login Selection (OS11.0)?

Feb 21, 2010

I used KDE3 with 11.0 with some KDE4 apps till I needed some applications from the KDE4 factory tree and mistakenly left the repository active. Next time the online update also updated most of the applications I would rather keep, and as a result the KDE3 disappeared from the KDM login choices. So I have two questions:1. how to enable users to select KDE3 at login (currently I have to select failsafe mode and run startkde manually)2. how to replay back an update I didn't want to have?

Perhaps a combination of the above: can I upgrade to OS11.2 and keep KDE3? (please don't tell me to switch to KDE4, I acknowledge and appreciate the effort and the improvements that KDE4 got, but it's still not a replacement for KDE3 - there are so many simple things which are impossible in the new version)

OpenSUSE Install :: SELinux Working In 11.2 - Failure To Allow The Graphical Desktop To Load (even With Enforcing=0)

Feb 12, 2010

I've been trying to get SELinux working in OpenSUSE 11.2. So far I can get to runlevel 3 with enforcing=0. Before I start tinkering with audit2allow, The 11.2 repository gives me these policy rpms:

[URL]

But that version of policy has some issues in OpenSUSE:

1) failure to allow the graphical desktop to load (even with enforcing=0) . The following message appears in the console during boot:

** (gdm:1073): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to system bus: A SELinux policy prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient (rejected message had sender "(unset)" interface "org.freedesktop.DBus" member "Hello" erro name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.DBus") startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/gdm: 1 Since enforcing is off, I'm surprised to see a message like that. SELinux shouldn't be preventing anything, so I don't see how modifying policy will solve that. Ideas?

2) Attempting to boot to runlevel 5 with kernel parms "security=selinux selinux=1 enforcing=0", I'm dropped off in runlevel 3 instead. I'm getting a couple of pages of AVC errors after boot (see below). I've tried several other versions of the policy without luck:

- the version included in Fedora 12 (refpolicy-2.2009117
- the latest release from Tresys
- the latest from the repository at Tresys

Fedora Installation :: F11 - Graphical Install Fails - Text Install Has No Fdisk

Jun 28, 2009

I have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.

I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.

So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.

However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.

It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.

What is the point of this option?

Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.

What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?
