After the GRUB prompt, my boot process does not advance to the login GUI. It kicks me out to the console view of the boot process and ends with a text prompt for logging in.
I get the following message just before the "Welcome to OpenSUSE 11.1" line:
Skipped services in runlevel 5: nfs
what's happening and how can I retrieve the login GUI?
After successful upgrading from 11.3 to 11.4 I had to install ATI driver from here Index of /mirror/ati/openSUSE_11.4 and delete the old ones. After rebooting the system entered in runlevel 5 where I received kwin error which I couldn't back-trace with the tools, but it was working. When I have made an on-line update and rebooted again it went to runlevel 3 without showing any error. When I type startx it shows error, but when I enter as root KDE starts normally and it's functional. how to get to the KDE with my account, but not as a root user ?

Failed services in runlevel 5: vmware
Skipped services in runlevel 5: cifs nfs
I uninstalled Vmware in hopes that it would solve the problem. No dice.
how to debug this or has anyone seen this issue before.

When doing login the system starts as root with startx but not as user. This is for me a permission problem. Only: I did not change the permissions and I did not log into as a root-X system. I just did set the permissions in yast to secure. Nothing else. The system complains:

I want to automatically run a script once the system has entered runlevel 3 during boot (the script requires network access). I know about /etc/init.d/boot.local but it's my understanding it's triggered in runlevel 1. I also know about init.d scripts but they seem a little daunting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm relatively new to Linux and to openSUSE. I've been using 11.3 as the OS on my home server for awhile using a GUI (Gnome). I recently created a new server which is much more powerful and would like to get serious about learning the ins and outs of the system. I've learned some basic bash and would like to install 11.4 on the new server. I have two questions about this. The first is: does it add any system overhead if I install KDE but set the default runlevel to 3? I know that running the GUI takes up system resources, but I'm new enough to the system that I'm not 100% comfortable yet not having a GUI backup. On the other hand, if having a GUI installed eats up resources (other than the HDD space for installing it) even if I'm only using the system in runlevel 3, then I think I'll forgo KDE and install it as text only and just bone up on bash.
My second question is: is there a file I can edit to customize the runlevel 3 console? I just installed 11.4 on my HP Mini using KDE but defaulting to runlevel 3, and I really like the background picture and little SUSE lizard at the top of my console. Is there a way to change the background picture and logo at the top? It's probably a little juvenile on my part to want to customize this but Linux is all about choice right?
So I want to get mount/umount option under right click services menu. I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

I installed Linux about a week ago, so I'm really new to it. I have been having some problems with it, when I start my laptop sometimes it shows my desktop background but never seems to load all the icons and everything it sits there with the mouse pointer and a the desktop background screen without icons. The second problem is that when I suspend it I can never get the screen to work again not even by moving the mouse or typing anything in.

(I am using a laptop, not sure if this is relevant) I have found using the system fairly easy and found all the help I need either here, or out on the net. However, I cannot find much information about the above error message that I sometimes get. I have only noticed this error occasionally when I resume from sleep mode, or when I turn the computer off. I haven't seen the message anywhere else (pop up window, konsole etc) Sometimes the skipped probes is as high as 70, other times as low as 10. I don't know what it is scanning(?)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed 11.3 on a Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop. After going through the install process it restarted (without a full reboot I believe) and spent a very long time going through a bunch of message. E.g. it spends about 10-15 minutes building java fonts, and warning me that Japanese/Chinese/Korean might not work in Java.About 20+ minutes after bootup it finishes with all the status messages (including a message that said it couldn't execute /usr/bin/cmp !?) and goes to a blank screen with a mouse sprite -- first a spinning circle, then a regular arrow sprite. So it's not a totally black screen, but all I have is the mouse sprite.
I let it sit there for over an hour.I think it was hitting the disk but nothing happened. I tried rebooting and it did the same thing.I tried setting the "nomodeset" boot parameter, which had helped someone with a similar problem no change.I tried it in failsafe mode no change.
I didn't notice any relevant complaints regarding 11.2 in the archives. The bootup & shutdow may be different problems. Randomly my recent install boots up fine or hangs with a blank black screen. A Ctl Alt F2 gets me to a prompt. Startx returns a lockfile comment that X is already running.
From here I can shut 11.2 down and restart it OK. There must be a bootlog kept in /var somewhere. I haven't tried the non-automatic bootup. The shutdown randomly drops back to the logout screen. Usually a shutdown command from there will shut it down. Sometimes shutdown doesn't work, but restart will finish the shutdown.
I decided I needed to expand my openSUSE partition because I was running out of room. There was some unallocated space following my /home and swap partitions that I wanted to assign to my / partition.
So after taking note that bad things could happen (as I've read everywhere), I got myself a copy of GParted (since Yast! partitioner doesn't move partitions, does it?) to start getting the thing to work. Well, actually, I got PartedMagic which has GParted (I realize it could be a problem NOW if they didn't have the latest version).
So the first step was to move the swap partition. I decided to do it one step at a time and only moved the swap partition to the end. That turned out fine...no problems whatsoever.
The next step is where the problem came in. It was moving the /home partition. It took a while to move but once it got to the end, it showed a message that was similar in nature to "error detected" without giving a long list of error messages. If it did, I probably would have copied it down. There wasn't anything in the "logs" either in GParted besides what it showed. Looking back, I probably should've went into /vars/logs to get additional log information but I guess I wasn't smart enough to do so (provided that GParted does leave log messages there which I think it does).
After that, it refreshed the drive and it ended up showing no partitions with an error and saying the only thing it can do is create a new partition table. After that, openSUSE wouldn't boot. After loading, (both normal and failsafe modes) it gives me the message in the link at the bottom. I can still access those partitions fine. Nothing's corrupted. Windows also boots up fine (it's on a different drive though) and reads the affected drive fine. Linux-based LiveCDs (including openSUSE 11.3) reads the partitions fine too.
I've tried using e2fsck on my ext4 partitions with commands I found during a search and they seemed to "fix" those partitions but it still won't boot and gives me the same message. Looking at it carefully, it seems the reason it can't find a superblock is because it can't find part8 of whatever that thing under /dev/disk/by-id/ is.
I would very much prefer a failsafe (or at least mostly failsafe) solution that won't (or is unlikely) to result in requiring the restoration of a backup but I do understand that there is always the chance of something going wrong that will kill everything. Considering that I can still access the data on that drive, I don't believe the data is corrupted. Maybe the drive itself (as in whatever signatures it may leave) but not the filesystems.

runlevels 2 -5 are identical in Ubuntu. /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf is used instead of /etc/inittab for changing the runlevel. But there's no point doing that since the runlevels are identical. The default runlevel is 2, so I tried to find some service I could disable in /etc/rc2.d. I didn't find anything I could work with.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4 the console output stops during bootup at various points (during init final scripts processing and when the tty1 auto login). This is a colinux environment but has nothing do with the problem as it is the same version of colinux kernel that works correctly with 9.10 but exhibits the problem with in version 10.4 Lucid.
when tty1 using mingetty auto logs in the .profile file starts the gnome-session (command: DISPLAY=$DISPLAY dbus-launch gnome-session &) and when the panel comes up the shutdown button is disabled when it should be enabled.
However, if during the bootup when the console output stops, I immediately toggle to virtual console 2 (tty2) and immediately toggle back to virtual console 1 (tty1) it restores the output to the console and when bootup completes the gnome panel has the shutdown button enabled as it should be. Some times when the console output stops it looks like a screen clear was issued and other times the lines remains an the screen. I added --noclear to the line that calls mingetty in /etc/init/tty1.conf but is has no effect.
After upgrade of 11.1 to 11.2 I noticed that none of services that was started in 11.1 at boot are starting now in 11.2. I check run-level of services with

When I start services manually everything is OK, but on restart they do not starting. Another weired thing is that my SuSEfirewall2 is filtering everything on input, nevertheless my previous configuration is still there, but ports are closed.

I put "%" before and after my username and name which gave the install an error. So I changed the username to one without the special character '%' but left the name with and the setup proceeded with an error and skipped the other three stages (sound testing, time, hardware setup). But everything seems fine with the install except I have not configured the sound card.
From what I have seen the install is pretty much fine other than the lack of functions which I obviously missed during the preference end section of the install. And so I was wondering is there a way to manually detect and use a easily configure a sound card or any way for that matter? The installation guide of Fedora 11 gives advice that was outdated 'system-configure-soundcard"(or something similar) has been removed since F9.

Currently have a few mixers installed which may be conflicting but the extra mixers were a symptom I created due to the no sound problem. The mixers are definitely not the major cause though. My onboard motherboard sound has not been set up as a module to be run is what I assume but any help would be great.
I'm using the 270.41.19 nvidia properietary driver for my Geforce GTX460 graphics card. I have a Sony TV connected to my HDMI and I know it supports the 1920x1080 resolution. Yes it works after gnome or other DE loads up.
But during the GRUB screen and the bootup console - It defaulted to a 640x480 resolution (as it always does with the nvidia prop driver). I usually used to check the output of hwinfo --framebuffer and choose the resolution by appending the right vga=0xabc parameter.
But now I have a problem since hwinfo says the best widescreen 16:10 framebuffer resolution that my card supports is 1280x800. Here is the output from hwinfo --vbe which should give the info about both my gfx card and my TV.
The initial nouveau driver was able to output native 1920x1080 during the bootup on the console without issues, so I guess even the properietary driver should be able to output (If my understanding is right the nvidia module loads later during the bootup and only is required for the X but not for the console itself).

I use release 11.2 and this one works very well. I try new release 11.3 and my system crash when I wont to start system on runlevel 5. There is Sempron 2 GHz CPU and nvidia fx550 graphics card. Keyboard PS2 does not responds but mouse on USB work well. When I start "safe" boot option system work well. What I can to do ? What I must change
View 4 Replies View RelatedNew Intel x64 system installed with Opensuse 11.1 (like the KDE 3.5 option) and has been running well until today. Booting stops at "starting jexec services". Even while booting under "failsafe" system halts at "starting jexec services". Unable to boot to command prompt to attempt repair. Ran "repair" option from install disc with no good results. Still will not boot past jexec services.

Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed.The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I donīt. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?

View 5 Replies View RelatedBoot from DVD 11.4 586 32 bit is fine. Loads up and offers me install, boot from HD, check media, firmware etc. Select text output, no acpi, check media. Linux kernel loads, then black screen showing progress in white text.
At "Starting udev..." process hangs. Eventually (several minutes later) message is returned about "worker" not able to read from "sr0" which I believe is the DVD drive which it has been using to this point.
I'm running 11.3 normally, udev is not a problem on boot from HD. The DVD media works fine on a Windows laptop showing "Starting udev... ok" and continues. Media checks ok on this machine.
I'm thinking that no matter what medium I use to install from, HD, DVD, net etc this udev problem is going to hit me again unless there is a hint I can pass to the bootup process.
After reading about other experiences with this issue I removed all the non-standard hardware and no difference. The DVD drive seems to be the issue. Bootup is already using it, and yet udev cannot find it.
Last night I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop and now X has stopped working. I can go into run level 3 OK.
I have tried removing the xorg.conf file, using a copy of the install xorg.conf. I have also tried reinstalling the ati drivers

I am sure the hardware is OK as I have my system dual boot with 11.2 and 11.3.
