OpenSUSE Install :: Failed Services In Runlevel 5: Vmware

Jan 5, 2011

For some reason today when I attempted to reboot my machine I am unable to start runlevel 5. The errors I am getting are the following:

Failed services in runlevel 5: vmware
Skipped services in runlevel 5: cifs nfs

I uninstalled Vmware in hopes that it would solve the problem. No dice.

how to debug this or has anyone seen this issue before.

OpenSUSE Install :: Skipped Services In Runlevel 5 Stops Bootup?

After the GRUB prompt, my boot process does not advance to the login GUI. It kicks me out to the console view of the boot process and ends with a text prompt for logging in.

I get the following message just before the "Welcome to OpenSUSE 11.1" line:

Skipped services in runlevel 5: nfs

what's happening and how can I retrieve the login GUI?

OpenSUSE Install :: Failed Services In Run Level 5

Mar 21, 2010

Earlier this evening I suddenly had hundreds of "Bug Buddy" windows start popping up, which seemed to be stuck in an infinite loop. I rebooted to find myself stuck in run-level 3, due to multiple daemons unable to boot.I cant copy & paste the logs as I have no way to transfer them over to this PC.

Failed services in runlevel 5: earlyxdm xdm avahi-daemon network-remotefs Of course when ever I run 'startx' neither my mouse or keyboard works.I've finally joined the forums, pitty It's because of errors.

General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

When I have made an on-line update and rebooted again it went to runlevel 3 without showing any error. When I type startx it shows error, but when I enter as root KDE starts normally and it's functional. how to get to the KDE with my account, but not as a root user ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can Edit To Customize Runlevel 3 Console?

Aug 10, 2011

I'm relatively new to Linux and to openSUSE. I've been using 11.3 as the OS on my home server for awhile using a GUI (Gnome). I recently created a new server which is much more powerful and would like to get serious about learning the ins and outs of the system. I've learned some basic bash and would like to install 11.4 on the new server. I have two questions about this. The first is: does it add any system overhead if I install KDE but set the default runlevel to 3? I know that running the GUI takes up system resources, but I'm new enough to the system that I'm not 100% comfortable yet not having a GUI backup. On the other hand, if having a GUI installed eats up resources (other than the HDD space for installing it) even if I'm only using the system in runlevel 3, then I think I'll forgo KDE and install it as text only and just bone up on bash.

My second question is: is there a file I can edit to customize the runlevel 3 console? I just installed 11.4 on my HP Mini using KDE but defaulting to runlevel 3, and I really like the background picture and little SUSE lizard at the top of my console. Is there a way to change the background picture and logo at the top? It's probably a little juvenile on my part to want to customize this but Linux is all about choice right?

Software ::vmware In Ubuntu 10.04 - Unable To Start Services ?

Sep 30, 2010

I am trying to get vmware to work in ubuntu 10.04(x64) and it just doesn't seem to work. I've made it work in debian(x64) before with the same installer but here I get errors.

installation seems to go fine with the installation script: VMware-Workstation-Full-7.0.0-203739.x86_64

But when I start it for the first time I get the message before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. and then I can press Cancel or _Install (yes with the underscore) when I press _Install it first stops the VMware Services and then says:

compiling:
-virtual machine monitor(successful)
-virtual network devide(error)
-vmware blocking filesystem(successful)
-virtual machine communication interface(error)
-vmci sockets(error)
after that it says:
Unable to start services.

See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-29088.log for details.

The log file:

But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

General :: Getting A Text Console Runlevel In Kubuntu 10.04 (Changing Runlevel Won't Work)?

Sep 4, 2010

runlevels 2 -5 are identical in Ubuntu. /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf is used instead of /etc/inittab for changing the runlevel. But there's no point doing that since the runlevels are identical. The default runlevel is 2, so I tried to find some service I could disable in /etc/rc2.d. I didn't find anything I could work with.

OpenSUSE Install :: Services Fail At Boot - Save To Turn Them Off?

Jun 2, 2011

during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services. Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed. The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I donīt. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?
