OpenSUSE Install :: Install Nicotine On A Hidden Truecrypt Volume?

i got opensuse 11.2 (gnome) and created a hidden volume with truecrypt on it. i would like to install nicotine on the hidden volume now,an only run nicotine while it is mounted. i only know how to install stuff with yast, i have no idea how to handle the terminal. i tried but its more like stumbling around. yast always puts the program into the standard menu where i dont want it to be. and by the way,how to disable the autostandby on my monitor? i tried already, but it didnt work)
I mount truecrypt ntfs hidden volume in Slackware, i can read but i can't write to it. It shows "Operation not permitted". I can read and write from other distro without any problem.
I installed TrueCrype 6.3a on my 8.1 Ubuntu. Everything went fine until I got to the part where I need to protect my hidden volume from damaged caused by writing to the outer volume (these instructions: [url] ). I can't find the checkbox to "Protect hidden volume from damaged caused by writing to outer volume". The closest thing I can find is an option to "Protect hidden volume when mounting outer volume". Intuitively these don't sound the same to me. There are 2 difference between my setup and the instructions; 1) the instructions appear to be written for Windows and not Linux. 2) I am using a file volume and not a partition volume.
Does anyone know where the option is to protect the hidden volume when writing to the outer volume?
Right now I only have Windows 7 64bit installed. I'd like to keep it installed and have a hidden Truecrypt system partition that holds Ubuntu. I've installed Ubuntu once before, but it was a while ago so I don't remember the details. Also, I'm not entirely sure how to work Truecrypt as I've never used it before. Do I install Ubuntu first and then run Truecrypt, if so, how do I deal with the fact that installing Ubuntu involves many partitions. Does Truecrypt recognize this automatically or do I have to somehow encrypt them all?
Frostwire and Nicotine + they both have outdated RPM's for 10.x that dose not support 11.3. They have newer .deb files. What would I have to do to install a .deb file. Navigate to the file using CD (change dir) and then? Last time,I changed the icon for the ding-dictionary,it used the gear-wheel symbol before. The I saw,that the hidden directories also used the new icon,and now they are all gone Did install the old 256.53-NVIDIA-driver last night,but that should not be the reason ?
how I can install truecrypt on Opensuse 11.2 32 bits. I've made a search trough Yast and the opensuse 1-click install website but could not find any package for truecrypt.
Is there an alternative way to install with software? so any solution that does not fall into the category of Yast or web-based installation of packages will be exotic for me
Using Nicotine+ I accidentally downloaded about 11000 files from an user who's evidently too busy to properly organize his archive, and got all his stuff stored in only one big folder.
Nicotine obviously crashed, and I'm not able to open it anymore. When I launch the program, it immediately freezes, and I can do nothing but force its quit. I tried to remove and reinstall the program, but the problem persists. So I was wondering if there's a way to remove the downloads from the list outside Nicotine, editing some files.
I have a Windows partition encrypted with TrueCrypt. If I start TrueCrypt (or RealCrypt) I can mount the partition through the GUI. before I encrypted the partition I used to auto-mount it at boot using fstab and it would appear in my places bar in the file managers. Is it possible to auto-mount truecrypt partitions from fstab?
TrueCrypt hidden volume plausible deniability is documented at [URl]deniability but how plausible is it? there is no sign of the hidden volume's existence within the outer volume even if the user is forced to disclose the outer volume password. For this to be plausible the outer volume must be used or the user has no plausible reason for having it.

I am thinking of installing Ubuntu on my machine, and I may need to still keep windows 7 around for certain games/apps. I want to do a full disk encryption using Truecrypt. As I understand, Truecrypt is compatible with both linux/windows/OSX, and has an option for a "hidden operating system."I want to Install both win7 and ubuntu, with ubuntu as a hidden OS. I have watched tutorials on ..... showing the method for creating a hidden OS for Windows, in this tutorial the second volume was created from the first volume and was effectively a clone of the original OS. Basically what I am asking is---- Is it possible for a hidden volume with a bootable version of Ubuntu Linux to cohabitate on the same drive as windows?If so, are there any howto's/tutorials you could point me to?
I have got a Acer Aspire 9300 which came with one of Bill Gates unreliable operating systems and a recovery partition in case something goes wrong. I surely installed linux (now on opensuse 11.4) as quickly as possible. mounting this hidden recovery partition under linux? All I can see is this from "fdisk -l"printout:

I assume that the partition in question is between blocks 0 and 2047?
I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

Upgraded my 11.2 system to 11.3 today. Can't login anymore using gdm or xdm login window. The password prompt is displayed but no chars are echoed in the password field. when you click Login, it displays "Authentication failure" in the window. The logged messages in the /var/log/messages for the gdm-greeter are:

Note that I can login at init level 3 as root of the user I"m attempting to login with in the gdm window.
I have a dd image of a full drive (as a file) that was using Truecrypt system encryption under windows. I want to mount the main partition from that image using Linux's Truecrypt. I am familiar with dd loopback devices and have the partition offset, but I don't know how I can mount it like this because I need to use the truecrypt command.
Is there perhaps some way to create a fake device file for the disk image that I can mount from within Truecrypt?
I have a 2nd hard drive that I have encrypted using true crypt. Is it possible to set this up with key files (or some other way) to auto mount when linux boots. I need it in true crypt because there are some work programs I dual boot to use in windows, and need to have access to the drive in XP from time to time, and true crypt can mount there as well. But 90+% of my time is in linux and I would like to have it auto mount through fstab (or whatever way it needs to be). My entire linux setup has been set up with encryption through dm crypt and LUKS (except for /boot). So I would think having a key file stored on the computer and an auto mount fstab would be just as secure as however secure my LUKS setup is. So any way to auto mount a true crypt 2nd drive volume?
I installed TrueCrypt in Microsoft Windows XP SP3 (no Linux installations present) and I stopped the TrueCrypt service in the Windows enviroment, and then, I restarted, and all the sudden it seemed the PC can not see the Hard Disk at all at startup, nada... I believe I dismounted it by stopping the TrueCrypt service... So the PC no longer understands there is a TrueCrypt volume in place, and I inserted the TrueCrypt recovery disk, and it can not do any thing, I restored the bootloaders, the true crypt loader, and once I finished this, I press ESC, and it says there are no bootable devices, so nothing. I even decrypted the disk, and it seemed that nothing happened with the restore disk...
Is there any way I can make this partition bootable again? because I have every thing in that partition, every single bit of life... I have used TestDisk under Linux right now, but I am unsure of this, and I also further complicated the boot proccess, and now the PC states at startup about missing partition tables. When I start truecrypt from this Kubuntu live CD, I am unable to see the encrypted hard disk even with root, there is no way to see this hard disk, only can be seen in the TestDisk app. I really I am desperate, at least, if I can not make Windows Boot again, maybe just suck all the files out of the hard disk and put them some where for now, I really need to get back to work, and I cant seem to find a solution...
I know here at Ubuntu forums, some one may have the solution. And I do know for sure all the files on this volume are there because of the TestDisk app, so they are there, they are just not reachable.... (I have posted this problem on a Linux forums instead of a Windows forum because the only way to try to recover the volume is with Linux Kubuntu Live CD
If one uses a free ftp account to store private data such as bookmarks, they might prevent any eavesdropping by using ssh for the transfer (ftps), or alternatively sftp.
However, they would still have to trust the ftp hosting provider, because the data is stored unencrypted in the server.
Someone suggested putting all bookmarks in a small truecrypt volume instead and synchronizing this with the ftp server.
Performance issues aside, given that the plaintext only changes a little in each resync (only a bookmark is added usually), is the use of the truecrypt volume introducing a means for an eavesdropper to break the code?
This one being Ubuntu 9.10 (yes, I know I really should upgrade). I keep a number of confidential files in a TrueCrypt container which is a standalone file in my Documents folder. I'd like to delete some of these, but I want to do it as securely as I can, but I believe if I simply hit 'Delete' with the file selected it'll move the file to the Deleted Items folder. This, I assume, means that the file is taken out of the encrypted volume and stored unencrypted in the Deleted folder.
I've been reading a little about the Shred command, and there seems to be some question about whether it works effectively with a journalled file system; and since I have no idea whether I'm using a journalled file system, or how to find out, I'm treating Shred and other over-writing secure deletion tools as ineffective for now.
With this in mind, can anyone advise me how I can protect the file stored in the TrueCrypt volume, and delete it in place, without taking it out of the encrypted area? And, further to that, can anyone tell me whether in fact the file is actually secured while it's in the encrypted volume? For all I know, just opening the volume may result in copies being made somewhere (apart from RAM).
I previously made a question about this and there was an Ubuntu deb package that you could download from Truecrypt's website. But there's no longer any deb packages there's only a .tar package containing a .sh script.When I run the script and install it says that I'm missing these two things. How can I download these two packages using aptitude?Requirements Truecrypt- FUSE library and tools- device mapper tools
I checked out this forum but still no solution for my problem. I tried to install Truecrypt, but I can't get it fixed. I extracted truecrypt-7.0a-setup-x64 to Desktop. Then in typed in terminal: sudo sh truecrypt-7.0a-setup-x64. The terminal asks my password and I type in my password and hit enter. The terminal disappears and nothing is happening.
I followed the upgrade directions, found here, precisely. However, I am still experiencing some unusual problems, some I think I have resolved, but others are leaving me puzzled.
Before I get to far into this, my working knowledge of *NIX platforms is decent, but I am no where close to expert or advanced.
Problem 1 - KDE Profiles (resolved) The first problem I experienced was that my KDE profiles were all screwed up, buttons would not work, desktop icons were missing, applications would not start or would show horrid graphics, and the list goes on. Having run through a similar problem with FreeBSD, I decided to simply move my ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.orig and then do a forced reinstall of KDE4. This seems to have resolved the issue, I just have to recreate my profile, which should be relatively simple.
Problem 2 - Sound Driver Shortly after my upgrade, I did have sound, but I had lost control of the volume. This is somewhat expected as with each Kernel update of Linux, I found I had to reinstall the sound drivers, Creative X-Fi. This never presented a problem as it was a 30 second process and very simple to perform (there were three commands, four if you include 'su -'). This time, I ended up running into an error, seen below:

Problem 3 - VMware Similar to the sound card, each time a new Kernel patch is applied, I have to recompile VMware Workstation 6.5 for it to work again. This is even simpler than the sound drivers as all I do is start VMware and it automatically recompiles. Now, when I go to start it, I receive the two following errors:

Problem 4 - Kernel... The previous two problems seem to be related to some underlying kernel issue that I have yet to be able to resolve. I have barely been able to change the error messages. So far I have forced a reinstall of almost everything kernel related that was already installed, plus I installed quite a few *-devel packages. I reinstalled 'make' and 'gcc' for good measure, but I am not getting anywhere.
I can't believe that I did not write down the password to my encrypted volume. Had not rebooted in a long time so I had not typed it and now that I rebooted I don't remember what is was.
Is there any way to automate the trial of different passwords? I remember the basic structure of what the password was so if somehow I could automate trying passwords from a list I may have a good change to recover my volume.
If/when I do remember the password. Is there a way to change the password on an encrypted volume? I need to make it something I will remember for sure... or write it down somewhere safe..
I have a raid 5 with 5 disks, I had a disk failure which made my raid go down, after some struggle I got the raid5 up again and the faulty disk was replaced and rebuilt itself. After the disk rebuilt itself I tried doing a pvscan but could not find my /dev/md0. I followed some steps on the net to recreate the pv using the same uuid then restored the vg(storage) using a backup file. This all went fine.I can now see the PV, VG(storage) and LV's but when I try to mount it, I get a error "wrong fs type" I know that the lv's are reiserfs filesystems, so I did a reiserfsck on /dev/storage/software, this gives me the following error:reiserfs_open: the reiserfs superblock cannot be foundNow next step would be to rebuild then superblock, but I'm afraid that I might have configured something wrong on my raid or LVM and by overwriting the superblock I might not be able to go back and fix it once I've figured out what I didn't configure correctly.
I have created a TrueCrypt volume, mounted it in Windows, and created an image file for my OS partition using Macrium Reflect (free version). I made a Rescue CD for Macrium, and the setup works great on unencrypted files, but I have no way to mount the TrueCrypt volume, while booted to the Macruim rescue CD. I have Puppy Linux 4.3.1 on a CD, and can boot to it. I'm a beginner's beginner, however, and I haven't figured out how to install TrueCrypt with Puppy Linux running. Getting the Macrium recovery program to run with the TrueCrypt volume mounted looks even more complicated, and I don't know if it's even possible. I want to be able to recover my laptop from a drive failure, as well as protect my OS from bad programs or malware. Macrium reflect does this job well, because it:
1. is free
2. only writes the used space of the system partition to the image file, and also compresses the data, resulting in a relatively small file. (~ 50 percent of the used space on the OS partition)
3. retains drive alignment for a pre-aligned partition.
However, I wish to keep my backup partitions encrypted to protect my privacy. TrueCrypt does an excellent job of this because it:
1. is free
2. encrypts the OS and all data on the computer.
3. protects all backup data.
I like the fact that Puppy Linux can be loaded into memory, so I only need to boot from removable media to work on my OS partition. I understand there is a portable Ubuntu OS, and perhaps this would be a better platform for my goal? Is there a way to combine Linux on removable media, with Macrium Reflect, and recover an image from a TrueCrypt volume?
